There’s undoubtedly a very special relationship between Israel and the United States. Since the establishment of the State of Israel in the British Mandate of Palestine, the two countries have had deep ideological, political and spiritual ties. This unique relationship between the two has resulted in shielding Israel from criticism and accountability for its occupation, apartheid and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians for over seven decades. Yet can this relationship be explained simply by the role of Zionist lobbying? By U.S. foreign policy objectives? Can American support for Israel be simply explained as continued empathy for the horrors of the Holocaust? Or is the truth closer to home and in the mirror?
In the season finale of Backspace, Sana looks at how the story of Israel has been constructed in the United States - and the very American story at its root, where the indigenous of the land are rendered visible in a very particular way.

Israel has been working night and day to ethnically cleanse the Palestinian people from their homeland since even before Israel become a state - when it was known as the Zionist movement. Israel didn't just cleanse Palestinians in 1948, when it was founded as a Western colonial project, and again under cover of a regional war in 1967. It also worked to ethnically cleanse Palestinians every day between those dates and afterwards. The aim was to move them off their historic lands, and either expel them beyond Israel’s new, expanded borders or concentrate them into small ghettoes inside those borders - as a holding measure until they could be expelled outside the borders. The 'settler' project, as we call it, is a misnomer. It's really Israel's ethnic cleansing programme. Israel even has a special word for it in Hebrew: 'Judaisation', or making the land Jewish. It is official government policy. Gaza was the largest of the Palestinian reservations created by Israel's ethnic cleansing programme, and the most overcrowded. To stop the inhabitants spilling out, Israel built a fence-barrier in the early 1990s to pen them in. Then when policing became too hard from within the prison, Israel pulled back in 2005 to the outer perimeter barrier. New technology allowed Israel to besiege Gaza remotely by land, sea and air in 2007, limiting the entry of food and vital items like medicine and cement for construction. Automated gun towers shot anyone who came near the fence. The navy patrolled the sea, stopping boats straying more than a kilometre or two off shore. And drones watched 24 hours a day from the sky. The people of Gaza were sealed in and largely forgotten, except when they lobbed a few rockets over the fence - to international indignation. If they fired too many rockets, Israel bombed them mercilessly and occasionally launched a ground invasion. The rocket threat was increasingly neutralised by a rocket interception system, paid for by the US, called Iron Dome. Palestinians tried to be more inventive in finding ways to break out of their prison. They built tunnels. But Israel found ways to identify those that ran close to the fence and destroyed them. Palestinians tried to get attention by protesting en masse at the fence. Israeli snipers were ordered to shoot them in the legs, leading to thousands of amputees. The 'deterrence' seemed to work. Israel could once again sit back and let the Palestinians rot in Gaza. 'Quiet' had been restored. ...It looks like the ethnic cleansing programme is being applied to Gaza anew. The half of the population in the enclave's north is being herded south, where there are not the resources to cope with them. And even if there were, Israel has cut off food, water and power to everyone in Gaza. The enclave is quickly becoming a pressure cooker. The pressure is meant to build on Egypt to allow the Palestinians entry into Sinai on 'humanitarian' grounds. Whatever the media are telling you, the 'conflict' - that is, Israel's cleansing programme - started long before Hamas appeared on the scene. In fact, Hamas emerged very late, as the predictable response to Israel's violent colonisation project. And no turning point was reached a week ago. This has all been playing out in slow motion for more than 100 years. Ignore the fake news. Israel isn't defending itself. It's enforcing its right to continue ethnically cleansing Palestinians.

Appartheid is not democracy, genocide is not war. There is a lot of evidence of Israel’s long-standing violations of international law. It has unilaterally annexed East Jerusalem, built illegal settlements in the occupied territory, and continued to build the separation wall in the occupied territory despite the International Court of Justice declaring it illegal in 2004. The UN Special Rapporteur and several human rights organisations (see Amnesty, Human Rights Watch, B’Tselem) have stated that Israel’s system of rule in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is actually apartheid. Restrictions of movement, forced displacement of Palestinian communities, demolition of houses, land grabbing and settler violence and other human rights violations that occur under the occupation are well documented.

They were always the oppressor. To be held accountable for oppressing others is not oppression. Is an inmate a victim? As far as I can see they were always criminal liars willing to use and abuse other people. WTF is that? Pre-published death tolls more than 200 times starting more than 30 years before any events in question. 1868 someone they knew what would happen in the next century accurately. Or they use a false number to account for history and what actually happened. They did not predict the future accurately more than 200 times. They devised a propagandized narrative that became the official narrative. Re-enforced by movies, social media, books, and a careful program of systematically destroying alternative history and prosecution of anyone objectively studying history. They continue to double down on condemnation of critics because if that facade slips even a little then they will be subject to forensic analysis which will expose their lies and crimes over the centuries. Surely those political players should not be stereotyped and used to paint the entire culture with a single brush. As the global community largely condemns Israels criminal activity.

I am a Christian Egyptian, Born, raise and living in Canada, your videos are amazing and filled with truths that the Occidental countries populations are refusing to believe or even consider. I am sadden about their willingful blindlesness to the truth. These stories need to be told because they entire World will end up paying the price of these injustices. I am always beyond being shocked about the amount of People that believe that hate just came out of people from thin air without any apparent reasons. If people would educate themselves more about the tragedies all over the World, they would understand why a conflict like the one between Palestine and Israel is born out of hate, discrimination and oppression of one state being portrayed as the victims when he is in reality most of the time the real agressor towards the other state being portrayed as the agressor when this state is in reality the victim. Your comments failed to take a stand in the 2 divides as Israel was the victims 2000 years ago but got back to their ancestral land in 1948. The Othman Arab Islamic Empire that ruled the place for 500 years might have enjoyed Palestine but the story has changed after the Arabs fought the newly established Israel state and lost the war. If Arabs fails to embrace the Newly established state of Israel in 1948, they have to face the realities as they have chosen wars instead of coexistence of both ststes as suggested in 1948 by united nations.

.the Arabs conquered Palestine by force in the seventh century and brought a different language, different culture and different genetics. The origin of Arab genetics, Arab culture, the Arabic language and the religion of Islam is in the Arabian Peninsula, therefore the Palestinians are not indigenous by definition. The reason people dont see the humanity of the Palestinian people is because the Palestinian people behave in an inhumane way. Hamas is a brutal authoritarian theocratic fascist regime that rules over its people with a brutal iron fist. They wage a never ending war against a vastly superior enemy with no end in sight. The PA on the other hand, is a corrupt money laundering operation that takes in donations from foreigners by using the IDF occupation sob story, and then shoving as much of that money into their pockets as they can, while murdering ANYONE who dares speak out against them, especially journalists. Then as for the Palestinian people themselves, all you have to do is simply talk to a Palestinian on the street to learn that they are not interested in peace, co-existence, or democracy. Thank you for creating this video. I'm an American who lived in Dubai for 4 years and that's when I found out about what's happening to the Palestinians for the first time. Before my time in the UAE, I had only ever heard Palestinians referred to as terrorists by the US news media, so I had no idea about their plight. I think most Americans don't know or understand that they have either been expelled/murdered or imprisoned within their own country and continually oppressed by Israel since 1948. I met so many lovely, gracious, kind-hearted Palestinians in Dubai that I came to realize that most of what is depicted about the Arab World in the West is propaganda designed to make us afraid of Arabs and promote Islamaphobia. Frankly, Araqbs are some the warmest, hospitable, and gracious people I've ever met and it's unfortunate that our government and Hollywood continually want to frame them in a bad light to serve their own selfish end-games.Thank you for bringing much needed light to this subject!

Illuminating. The hardest thing is always to see ourselves objectively. And it seems that Americans start from a place of seeing Israelis as "themselves." Therefore they don't see the crimes against humanity & international law that are committed by Israel right in front of them, with funding and tacit support from the US. This also explains Israel's anomalous position as a wealthy state that is the largest beneficiary of US aid many times over. As if it is not really another country but simply a part of America.

It's not just shared religious heritage, though. Many Palestinians are Christian. As covered in the video it's Americans seeing Israel in terms of their own distorted self-image. As a people supposedly fighting against colonialism, while simultaneously displacing an indigenous population. I never really understood that line about "shared values" before (what "shared values" I thought - do they mean settler-colonialism, ethnic cleansing, and Jim Crow?).

puerto rico is part of the united states. yes it was colonized, but for the better in my opinion. puerto rico enjoys virtually all the rights of the american mainland. no one who lives there hates america, because they ARE america. a very small group of anarchists and socialists want independence, but that is pure madness. You may have stressed that the main reason for US support of Israel is not cultural and political affinity etc, etc,, the main reason is foreign policy interest. Israel remains, and will always remain an American police presence in the heart of the Arab world to serve American interests when necessary. Saudi Arabia and other friends can defect but Irael cannot so Americans of all sorts, even anti-Semites, in their national interest support Israel. If America and the Arab world became close and permanent friends, support for Israel would dissipate.

This is quite funny rationalization but bears no basis in reality. Israel acts contrary to many American interests including selling American weapons technology to americas adversaries after being subsidized for these purchases with foreign policy aid. Also an apartheid state against Arab people that is one of the roots of conflict in the Middle East is not supportive of American interests but instead endanger them. Israel has also participated in no American led Middle East wars. What kind of ally doesn’t send their soldiers to their “closest ally’s war?” Perhaps a discussion of money in U.S. politics and where that money comes from is a much more direct reason for U.S. government support of Israel.

When thinking of this war, it really brings out important things to note: The countries we live in do NOT determine what ethnicities live in it. For example Sami people live in Finland, Sweden, Norway and even in Russia, all in northern parts of Scandinavia. They're a populus that has not been given independence on their land, but they still are let to live. Just because there is no specific country there, doesn't mean certain people don't exist. They do and all people have their story. Not recognizing palestinians as palestinians beats the purpose and heavily sits on its nationalistic idea. I once believed in good things of nationalism until I realized that nationalism would not tolerate even people who have history in your land but have their own language and culture. Nationalism even with its good intends could harm ethnic minorities that live in country and purge the cultures in return.

I was in Jerusalem few weeks ago to celebrate the feast of tarbanacles, however my heart was torn into pieces 💔 when I saw Palestinians , they are humans created in the Image of God, they have the right to live peaceful and happily and enjoy the privileges of the 21st century. At this stage I see it's very hard for any nation to stop or tell isreal about his doing to protect it's own interest, this is because the nuclear power countries like isreal with lot's of experience in war are highly respected and feared by others nations. There will be peace and justice for the Palestinians when the US will no longer be the a world power. That will be very soon, - when China becomes the world leading nation, and the US dollar cease to be the trading currency.

Israel matters to all Christians because the age of man is coming to an end and the Messiah of the Jews and Christians will make his return some time in the near future.
