Is there any reason we can't ask to be paid to do the review and still do a good job? There is ALWAYS a reason to have a biased opinion and self serve, yet a lot of people like Brad and yourself don't alter the truth even if you're given a tablet or paid by the company. I think we keep trying to protect against the lie that getting paid to do our jobs causes us to lie. It's a reality that people lie, but youtubers that SELL a companies products should be thought of as professionals able to be paid like professionals and still produce honest, trustworthy reviews.
@TabletPro
@TabletPro 5 жыл бұрын
@@ARandomMonitor I absolutely agree that the likelihood of falling into the trap is greater when you think you are "untrappable". My main point is that getting paid to do a review doesn't equal biased untruthful review. I believe we are on the same page on that point, but correct me if I'm wrong. I'm saying that it can be done correctly with intelligent checks and balances without resorting to "reviewers should only review products they personally pay for". I don't think that's a sustainable business and if it is, that's because in some roundabout way the reviewer IS still getting paid for the review even if it's not that company paying them. Which can still cause bias. Here is the long and short of it for me. I've seen countless people never even start attempting to do good things because their motivation wasn't perfect yet. It's likely it never will be perfect or that we will ever actually be unbiased completely. But THAT'S OKAY. That's why we watch multiple reviews from various biases or just find someone who has the same biases as us so we end up with a product we like. 😊 Btw, you didn't come across at all as angry or insulting. you made a lot of good points. Hopefully I also don't come across wrong. Capitalization used to emphasize the words not to text yell. Brad, sorry about highjacking your kind and considerate comment to Crowne Prince. Was kind of hoping you would read my comment and reconsider your position on doing reviews. May be beneficial to get a bunch of us tech reviewers into a conversation somewhere and establish some education and standards to improve the situation for everyone, reviewers and manufacturers.

Tablet Pro Tablet Pro I do agree people need to make money, people have to eat, after all. The place that money comes from can affect the work you do though. When it’s through a group of viewers who you’re providing the reviews for, in general that provides a better environment for unbiased - or at leased consumer biased - reviews. Granted it’s not a guarantee, and I can think of a few examples where following the fans has actually caused it’s own issues, but it’s a better position at least. Totally agree with you on the motivation bit. I’d love to make art but trying to draw anything is very stressful for me because I can see what I want yet feel how utterly awful my own work is, and there’s nothing immediate I can do about it. On a somewhat related note, I wish that was the focus of shows that try to tell you you can do anything. Everyone already knows it takes hard work to get what you want, but if you tell a strong artist to draw with their off-hand, even they aren’t going to last long. They have the exact same almost physical repulsion to their work that I do when I try to draw, it’s crazy. There’s something about that they managed to get over at one time, and that’s the part people like me need help with.

Another reason why I find it difficult to trust youtubers who review tablets is the fact that some will inevitably say only positive aspects of the product to please the company in hopes to receive more free products in the future. It's honestly disheartening to see up and coming art channels make reviews and give high praise to products that honestly don't deserve it because they are worried about their bottom line. I honestly tend to just look for random amateurs who upload reviews for products I want because I know they spent their own money and they tend to be waaaay more honest about the products themselves.

@Ath Collins I don't have a specific channel because any channel dedicated to reviews are probably biased anyways. Just look for reviews of tablets/products you're interested but make sure the user has actually paid for it that way you'll know they are invested.

Amazon and sites like that have surprisingly loose rules on reviews. I work for a construction company and we've had reviews removed from our Yelp pages just because the customer said that we asked them to write a review (we didnt tell them what to say or how to rate us in any way). I've heard about some products on Amazon having terms attached with the "free product" that can be shocking restrictive like requiring perfect scores and crap like that. They want an artist to do $1000 in advertising for them in return for a $100 product. This is why im always suspicious of any online review videos where someone just rambles on about how perfect their product is.

This reminds me a lot of how Nintendo tried to control reviews over their video games using the brand ambassador program. You would sign up and get review copies of the games you wanted to review, but when your video was up Nintendo would get like 2 thirds of the money that video makes and not to mention they could just terminate your program if you said something they didn’t like. The alternative was to put a review up without the program only for it to be copyrighted by Nintendo allowing them to get all the money.

Fantastic video. My experience also 100% reflects yours. I did my first tablet review a few weeks ago, but before that I rejected 4 companies who tried to get me to give them 5-star reviews, buy the product myself (and then "maybe perhaps who knows" refund me), only gave me a week to do a review (which...Why....? Do they think their tablet is going to break after more than a week?)...etc.....Absolutely shady and generally dishonest. My relationship to my viewers and respecting the trust they have in me will always be my priority over getting free products. This topic was important, thank you for covering it!

As someone in PR/Marketing, I need to point out that any company requesting you purchase the product yourself on Amazon, and does not request you disclose in your review that you were compensated for the tablet is breaking FTC guidelines. For anyone working with a company, if there is compensation or even the hint that there might be compensation for your review, that needs to be disclosed upfront. Verbally and at the start if it's a video. Clearly worded so even your grandma would understand if it's a posted review. Any company that's not asking you this - worse, any company requesting that you don't do this - is a shady player and you ought to report them to the FTC by calling 1-877-FTC-HELP

This isn't an attempt nor a paid thing to mention. But i like IBIS Paint app on Android and Iphone (i use iphone for it's Pressure sensitivity mechanic only available on iphone) that has many options to use and good material/ background material patterns for a simple background. I wish they make a PC an Mac download for it. but i got no luck. it has a free unlimited time trial with limited brushes. But the full thing is like, $7 one time purchase per account for all brushes . there is like 3 other options but that's a monthly subscription which i don't believe it's worth it. only gives Tone Curve, gradation map and cloud. Just give the app a try and play around with it. if it's not your liking, then that's fine. your choice. If you do like it, try the $7 one. I think it was worth the cash.

After I shared a video on how to make my phone a speaker phone for the classroom, I've been sent so many requests on reviewing products such as microphones. Making one video just to help other teachers took a ton of my time, and I wasn't paid, so I have always said no to future videos. If I really need something, I'm more than happy to pay for it, and not deal with tasks that follow up. I don't think many companies would send me a high end product to try and compete with both my iPad Pro and Cintiq Companion 2. They'd start off with basic tablets anyway (as you also mentioned). Thanks for this video! Reviewing products isn't all it's cracked up to be in my opinion (and I used to review products quite often, but I've retired over this summer).

Speaking from the other side as a brand owner I have only worked with reviewers who do unpaid reviews (in cash or products) - so after the review (which I have no input into other than supplying them with a reviewer info pack with information I think might be pertinent for their viewers) I just pay for their return shipping back, or more often, to the next reviewer. To me - it crosses an ethical boundary for reviewers to keep the products sent to review (at least without this being very clearly stated) and even if it is disclosed it makes me uncomfortable. Advertising and reviews should be kept clear distinguished and so called "advertorials" do not help the reviewer's reputation in the long term. So for brands who are starting off - the same thing applies - if a reviewer is asking that they get to keep the product - feel free to say no and find a reviewer who is happy to review without "taking payment".

My Huion H950P literally just arrived from Amazon this afternoon and I get home and all of a sudden have three of these painful truth about reviewing drawing tablets on my recommended playlist. I didn't see any of these before even though I'd seen tablet reviews from all three of the people. Makes me kind of nervous because I see Huion all over this video, and I definitely get the feeling that they are one of the companies you are referring to. Kind of wish I'd ran into these videos sooner. Like last week when I was doing my research and preparing to buy.

Getting surprise customs fees after the fact doesn’t happen in my country (Danmark). If there are customs (and/or VAT) to be paid, you won’t receive the product directly. In stead of the product the Postal Company will send you a bill, saying that unless you pay within two weeks, they’ll return the package to the sender. On top of customs (usually around 6-7%) you'll also have to pay 25% VAT plus a 160 DKK (= about 24 USD) fee for their trouble in paying your VAT. Now I'm sure this letter comes as a surprise to many. They may not mind the VAT or the customs so much, but that extra $24 is hard to stomach, so they simply don’t pay and of course don’t get the product. The seller then has to return the money which is why many Amazon sellers have simply stopped sending anything to my country.

This is pretty much exactly why I stopped accepting products from non-independent companies, regardless of who they are (I would and do still accept things from small, single-person creators like a friend who makes paints and another who builds palettes.). Should have made a video myself about how the “review for us” market is kind of shady. It bugs me when you can tell that there’s something not quite right about the review, but it bugs me even more when you CANT tell.

I could say my experience is somewhat good because I started my digital drawing with my own laptop and a wireless mouse before going to universal stylus pen+Samsung J6+medibang to draw digitally for years na. This stylus pen is so good I'll never let anyone take this from me lol. I just bought Huion HS64 last 2 months and it's perfectly fine as of now, I think I made a good decision but at the same time, no. Why no? I think I just jumped up at the hype of owning one. My stylus pen has been my partner for over 2 years now and I started to realize that the pen is really enough for me and that buying the tablet is a bit regretable on my part. Moral of the lesson: Think of the pros and cons PROPERLY and ANALYTICALLY, not just hop in the bandwagon. I think I moved too fast with the drawing tab thing. Why yes? Thankfully though, I can draw from my laptop with this tablet. So far, as I said, I have no problems with it. I love how they give you many freebies in one package for on ~P1700 in our Philippine currency. Another thing is that I love how the tablet is compatible with Android so I can connect it to my phone (despite the fact that I still prefer that stylus I bought from Lazada). I actually searched on what to buy before acquiring the actual thing (with a mindset of following the trend lol) and so far, the only drawing pad I saw that can be connected to Android devices is this brand, aside from Wacome One, so I looked up on it, fix my budget, and bought it from Shopee. Thought I still sort of regret buying because of the thinking I had while buying it, I'm definitely doing my best to get used to it and is satisfied from using this product gave me.

i ended up getting an ipad pro and have not regretted it since. i know this comment is a year late but still 😭 i looked up reviews on here but for some reason i just had this little feeling to not listen, not bc there’s anything wrong with the ppl doing the review, but just felt a general air of skepticism when i watched. since ive used a couple of wacom tablets before i figured I’d go w/ another but the pens are just too bulky for me. so i went with an ipad, it made more sense for me. my tech wasnt reliable at the time so i didnt want to buy a tablet that would be rendered useless if my laptop or mac desktop failed me- which btw they did end up failing not long after buying the ipad. so this is my long winded way of saying, go with your gut and your own unique set of circumstances. had i had the desktop i have now at the time of looking for tablets, i might have gone with something different. for some of you pen size may not matter (insert dick joke here), but for ppl with tiny hands like me big bulky pens might bother you. basically, take every review with a grain of salt and dont let amazing artists using something potentially crappy fool u.

I wouldn't suggest getting a Wacom. Their drivers can be a little buggy and unusable. I had an old CTH480 that had just been sitting for a few years (brand new, only used it once) and I decided to plug it in. No matter how I fiddled with it, updated the driver, uninstalled the driver, etc. the cursor would just keep spazzing around my screen. So I gave up. One of my friends has a Cintiq and she told me how awful Wacom's drivers can be sometimes. Upon hearing this, I bought myself an XP Pen Deco 02. I've had the tablet for a few months now. I've only had some minor issues with it (nothing that couldn't be fixed by restarting my computer) but it works great! Highkey would recommend looking into other companies. Stay away from Wacom and Huion imo

The thing that doesn't sound as devious, but is, is when they ask to preview your review, and asking for veto power. Good review? Publish it. Bad review? Don't need to edit it, just don't publish it, thanks. It's how a lot of professional corporate "science" is done. Company pays you (and a bunch of other orgs) to compare their product to their competitors or to do some specific survey. And then they publish all the good results as science they funded, where the results were independently tested and proven, and then they quietly delete everything that they don't like.

Thanks for this. I've been looking at reviews lately with an eye towards buying my first tablet monitor and I've been having a hard time finding one that doesn't seem to be influenced by the reviewer having received perks from the company. You mention Aaron Rutten, who I first became aware of some years ago as a Painter instructor. I watched some of his tablet review videos yesterday and found he was heavily biased towards Wacom. He did a 3-part video and not one tablet was from any other company besides Wacom. Yes, Wacom was the first on the market and has a huge user base, particularly among professionals, but it would be nice to have unbiased reviews that give consideration to tablet that are more affordable to people who don't make money from their art. One other thing that bothered me is, Aaron disabled comments on the videos, so I couldn't even ask a question. Anyway, thanks again for telling it like it is.

Beyond KZbin videos, it had consistently good reviews on Amazon with balanced testimonials (pros and cons included), and the bad reviews seemed to point to user issues more than product. Still on the first nib and I put it away when not in use so the cat won't walk on it (wireless connectivity makes that quick and easy). It's been everything I had hoped for.

She was totally planning on doing the video, but kept putting it off, especially after the tablet broke soon after she received it. Every few months I'd ask her if she was going to make the review, since it seemed like the responsible thing to do, even if she didn't sign any sort of contract stating that she had to do it. But this tells me that it's probably a good thing that she never went through with making that video.

This video proves is that nowhere is safe in regard to moralistic issues. The big concern about Amazon right now is the phoney ratings scandal either by mass, unsolicited reviews or 'pressure' by sellers upon buyers who (in a lot of cases) actually offer monetary partial refunds to get them to offer the 'valuable' 5* ratings when a buyer seeks that 'magic' score. I have been offered cash to increase my ratings from a seller; let's just say a seller on a site of what's considered to be a reputable business concern and I reported that immediately. The biggest issue this brings up is the validity of those within the likes of KZbin who are given products for free that, in truth, may well not be of any use to the person who reviews the product in the first place. I've seen man-caves where such reviewers takes the viewer on a tour of what he's gathered over the years from those manufacturers who's only true reason is to get that 5* 'accreditation' to promote sales. We can each view this issue as we feel is right for us but it should be said that KZbin of old was actually a good place to be, where every man and his dog offered up knowledge, hints, tips advice (the list goes on) without any consideration to monetary gain. Now? Google is happy with not just those Ads they place themselves into here, but the plethora of KZbin ‘academics’ who's sole, and only, interest is to make money from the get-go which earns Google even more money. It's a business now; simple as that, and to be really honest, none are any better than any other review because at the end of it all that important decision of 'should I or should I not' arena gets greyer by every review that's made from trusted, or untrusted, reviewers in here. We all may as well look at sites outside KZbin, to those places where purchasers are star-rated without ANY attempt to promote false or misleading opinion based on hand-outs rather than direct, sometimes obvious, attempts to mislead.

A few monhs ago I decided to get a pen-display tablet sorta thing, but didn't want to spend wacom prices on it, so I was looking for some alternatives. It got so frustrating really quickly, because no matter what video you clicked, it just all sounded the same. You could tell it was kind of like a script that was just sent out to everyone with a deal and that's what everyone said. I ended up getting the xp-pen 15.6 and I'm really happy with it, but I wish there were things that I knew beforehand. For example how the calibration acts up when you set it up as a second monitor. Customer support was super friendly (they apologised about 3 times within one email) and it got resolved basically immediately. I just found it super dodgy how this issue, out of all the reviews, was briefly mentioned ONCE and completely brushed over. Because it's kind of a big deal in some cases. I feel like the most known example for that is Huion. If you've ever heard about the brand, you also know about their bad drivers. ... Yeah, now how many reviews mention them? I just find it really scummy and I'm sad that this is such a common thing. It really makes me lose trust in the people I am trying to listen to.

I feel a little bit scammed about the ipad pro reviews regarding drawing on it. They were all so facinated how good this ipad is to draw on. So after a few moths I bought one ( ipad pro 12,9). This tablet is very expensive ( over 1000 dollar) but to be fair the overall experience with it was nice. But regarding to drawing there were big problems: 1. You literally draw on pure glas. Compared to graphic tablets who are made for drawing it feels really bad to draw on. You can buy a screenprotector which gives you the feeling of drawing on paper BUT it ruins the top of the pencil so you have to buy new ones often. 2. The apple pencil is not really good for drawing in my opinion because the top is too thicc. Yes you can easily zoom in but when you draw you should see your whole picture. 3. Even the big ipad seems at least for me a little bit too small for drawings. Its hard to draw when you dont want to zoom in. The good things about the ipad is: 1. You can draw instantly whenever and whereever you want. Problem was it didn't really matter to me that I can take it with me because this thing was too expensive for me to take it somewhere tbh. And I want a quit warm place when I draw. 2. The zooming and other things are much faster done than on pc but thats about it... SO overall it wasn't worth at all to REPLACE a good wacom tablet(sold it for ipad) for pc with an ipad pro. End of the story I sold the ipad LuL
