There is so much conflicting communication out there about fitness and most people miss the actual communication with themselves. Go girl! You should be so proud of yourself for mentally realising that you don’t have be “that” person who lifts heavy. Your videos are amazing! Literally going through these feels right now ❤
@rachels25684 ай бұрын
I started lifting heavy about a year ago and recently I've not been loving it. My back and knees have been more prone to injury, which takes me out of the gym for weeks at a time, and I've been feeling so guilty and like I'm falling behind. This video was really helpful to know that it's ok to take a break - I've been wanting to try more gentle strength training workouts like pilates! My only reservation is how motivated I am when I'm in an actual gym, but working out at home is NOT motivating at all, so I'm afraid I'll give up easily.
@MissFitAndNerdy4 ай бұрын
If you've been getting injured more lifting then usually there's something more to look at there. There's a few things that might be happening: 1. Your form isn't optimal. It would be worth investing in 2-3 personal training sessions to get form checks for the bigger lifts. This goes a loooong way in preventing injury. When you add more and more weight, even small deviations in form can cause huge issues 2. You're just going too heavy overall. If you feel like you're really pushing yourself hard with the weight, then try scaling back by 20%. In general, you should be leaving 1-2 reps in the tank with good form. So if your workout calls for 10 reps, you should be able to do 12 with perfect form but stop at 10. 3. You're not recovering well enough. This could be because you're training too much/too often/too hard, not sleeping enough, not eating enough, not eating enough protein, or too stressed overall. Optimizing recovery can greatly reduce injury risk. 4. Nutrient depletion can make injury more common. If you eat a restrictive diet (calorie restriction, vegan/vegetarian, limited carbs, etc), you might not be getting enough of certain key nutrients to repair your body Even if you don't want to keep lifting regularly, if 3 or 4 is your problem, you'll want to work on that to improve your overall health

I workout at home only and what helps me is keeping my home gym equipment in my sight by putting it next to my TV (where I follow workouts). There's also an element of self-discipline involved which is great to hone. I'd suggest thinking about what public gym things motivate you to workout and trying to introduce those into your home gym space. If it's other people, I usually just watch informational workout videos from folks that are demonstrating helpful exercises to motivate me to move.

Reading the comments and from my own experience, I feel like mobility really is the next “big thing” in wellness because it helps with every day life/longevity AND all other physical activities (more mobility means less injuries when lifting, for example, because you have a bigger range of motion, better control of your body and better “feel” for how to move/lift)

Yeah, I think a lot of people noticed the initial benefits when they start resistance training and then get stuck thinking that they have to keep doing exactly that in order to keep feeling that way. But in reality, often the huge benefits come just from the change rather than the actual thing itself. This is true for different diets too. It’s just the body responding to a hormetic stress.

I love that you put this video out there because more needs to be said about the 5x a week lift heavy routine that just doesnt work forever. I started developing a lot of issues from heavy lifting, even with a good stretching and mobility routine. Which I later realized I had a lot of imbalances and fascia migration causing my body to be misaligned. At first I switched to hypertrophy ranges and light weight, but you cant strength train yourself out of dysfunction. I felt even worse than when I was doing low reps. One day I saw some low impact workouts on tiktok, started with 5lbs, and a lot of my postural issues i had from barbell rows were fixed. I could stand for longer periods. I was having achey feet after some band hip abduction work (it messed up my alignment), and that was fixed too. Im not giving up on strength training, it just produces euphoria that lighter weight cant replicate but I'm spending time on making my body feel good and aligned.

My cravings have always been flowy stuff like yoga, animal flow, kettlebell flows etc and I also love HIIT, but I was not happy with being either skinny or not defined when I gained weight, so I started Bodybuilding and was really happy with how I finally gained some muscle. But my body keeps getting me up to do cardio so even though I'm eating like 3500 kcal daily and training so hard that I almost cry, I'm still not further than I was a year ago. In fact, I think I used to have more muscle even though I'm training much harder than before. It's just so exhausting. Leg days make me so tired I have to lay down afterwards. People say: just give up you're not made for Bodybuilding. But I keep thinking, if I quit cardio I'd build more. Tough decisions
@MissFitAndNerdy4 ай бұрын
If you want to prioritize aesthetic goals it would definitely be worth cutting back on the cardio for a few months and seeing what your body can do when you’re just focused on resistance training. Cardio resistance training, essentially our opposites of each other when it comes to the systems of the body that are required for that type of movement. So if you’re doing a lot of cardio, you’re definitely undoing a lot of the progress you would be making with resistance training. Obviously idk what your current routine is but consider cutting out cardio for 3-4 months and then see how much progress you make with building muscle

I think everyone, at some point forgets you can change your goals when it comes to resistance training. Resistance training was and is meant to support whatever goals you have whether it’s a sport or daily life activities. Bodybuilding, powerlifting, strength training, and Olympic lifting are not everyone’s only options. For example, I used to powerlift when younger. I loved lifting heavy and getting strong enough to reach bench press, deadlift, and squat goals. But my flexibility and mobility paid the price. I was big and strong, but couldn’t do much when it came to daily life. Now, years later, my focus is also on mobility and flexibility through yoga. I weightlifting 2x a week to support my strength in order to get better at yoga postures.

It's okay to alternate too. Like, spend the next 4 months just training, eating, and living intuitively. Then spend 4-6 months on aesthetic goals. And go back and forth. You'll still make progress and maybe feel more balanced :)

Sometimes I get stressed out of always pushing myself to lift heavy, I'm not very strong I can't lift heavy but I try to lift as heavy as I can to build muscle and most important to build bone density as I have osteoporosis, is it possible to build muscle and bone density without having to lift so heavy? Are there other exercises besides strength training that can help with muscle and bone density for osteoporosis??
@MissFitAndNerdy4 ай бұрын
Remember that heavy is completely relative!! What is heavy for me might be light for you or visa versa. "Lifting heavy" in general means lifting as much weight as you can with perfect form and leaving 1-2 reps in the tank. So if the goal is 10 reps, you should lift as much weight as you can to do 12 perfect reps. There's no number of pounds in the definition of "heavy." 45lbs might be a heavy squat for you. 100lbs might be a heavy squat for you. 250lbs might be a heavy squat for you. It is entirely relative to your own strength
@daysoftheboo4 ай бұрын
@@MissFitAndNerdy I can't even do 45 lb squats ! The heaviest I can do squats is 25 lb on my barbell LOL But if 25 lb feels heavy to me than it is heavy for my body ? I would crush myself if I try to squat more than 25 lb right now I'm hoping to get stronger , but it's just I constantly get told if I want to increase bone density I have to increase my weights , but if I push myself to lift too heavy it's not going to be good for him it's going to be wiggly and it's super uncomfortable when you're trying to lift away that's way too heavy, I think I see what you mean, I would rather do more reps with a weight that feels comfortable, not too light but not so heavy that I'm wobbling , I don't see how wobbling a heavyweight would increase my bone density it actually hurts too , trying to lift more than what I can handle physically hurts ☹️
@taoist324 ай бұрын
Try rebounding. Jumping on a mini trampoline you are resisting gravity a lot more than lifting weights. It’s also low impact and you can buy a bar attachment so you can hold onto it while you jump. No high jumping necessary to get benefits. Look up rebounding on KZbin.
@MissFitAndNerdy4 ай бұрын
@@daysoftheboo if 25 lbs is heavy for you then it's heavy! But how many reps are you trying to do? Generally for bone density, you'd be focusing on the 8-12 rep range (approximately). But yes, wobbling is not good. You should do what is difficult for *you*. And you should gradually apply progressive overload. But that needs to be small, incremental increases over time as you build strength. Working with a personal trainer for a few weeks might be helpful to make sure you're on the right track! I currently have a spot open if you're interested :)

I’ve been resistance training for a long time and I LOVE it! But my body has been BEGGING me to become a mobility girlie. I’ve been avoiding it mostly because it would mean giving up my passion. But listening to you, I guess I can at least incorporate a little lifting while I work on fixing all my imbalances and joint and mobility issues. Honestly it will probably move me closer to my goal if I just listen to my body, anyway. It’s psychologically a challenge, but I think I need to make this move. Thanks for the inspo!

@@sarahhughes4023 It only takes about 1/7th the amount of work to maintain muscle as it does to build muscle. I'm still exercising and using my muscles so I don't anticipate losing much muscle except maybe in my glutes because it's hard to really activate those as much as a 200lb hip thrust lmaooo. But so far, no I haven't appeared to lose any muscle. I have lost fat though. But that's more due to changes I talked about in my last video! :)

I've been lifting since 2012 or so, with a few pauses here and there, but this year I'm going through the same thing. Although on my end it was brought on when I strained a tendon in my foot last year and haven't been able to do much (recovering now though!) This is my first time watching one of your videos. I enjoyed it and I enjoyed hearing about your journey and what has brought you to this place in your journey. I am a runner, I heard you say you have a goal of running 10 miles. You can certainly get there. Please make sure you to take it slow. I'm sure when you lift, you don't life heavy every single time, that is the same with running. Please do not run your hardest or fastest every single time. Running slow will keep you injury free as you increase your mileage to achieve your 10 mile goal. Keep doing your thing and I will subscribe. I hope to hear more about your running progress.

I might have a different perspective because I’m getting ready to turn 50. I love that you are recognizing you need to listen to your inner voice and find balance. Because that is super important in life. I never thought I’d be in a position at this time in my life battling insulin resistance, along with menopause and now sarcopenia from listening to myself. Really the problem was is I didn’t want to listen to my perfectionist must lift x amount of days and x amount of weight versus just doing the heavy lifting that would benefit me and the other things I enjoy/crave. All of this to say I think the studies pretty much show you are ahead of the game if you stick with heavy training to battle some of things. So while i think mobility, flexibility, and cardiovascular health are all very important, I would still look at lifting 3-4 days a week heavy while incorporating yoga on the other days. Unfortunately you will find as you get older that mobility and stretching are a necessity to add to virtually every day. Anyhow I know everyone is a work in progress and I wish you the best of luck in your self discovery, personal experiment and journey! It’s all tough no matter what and trying to do all the things! ❤

Resistance training is absolutely important for health and longevity! I can’t advocate for it enough! I don’t plan on quitting it forever, I’m just scaling back on it for this season of my life. But it’s all about balance and optimizing your health. I’m dealing with some health issues now that I don’t think lifting heavy/intense workouts are helping with and are probably even having a negative impact on. So right now, changing my training will make me healthier, which will have a greater overall impact on my longevity

Hi miss! I love your videos thank you for putting such great content online!! I've been bing watching your videos online and I have a question about reverse dieting! I'm currently eating 1600 calories (not restricting but the less i eat the less i'm hungry). I have a lot of fat to lose (I gave birth 2 months 1/2 ago), I started working out again 2 months ago and I feel like things are not moving (doing 3 days of resistance training per week)! I was wondering, should I try to eat less to lose some fat or to eat more (reverse diet style, adding 100 calories every week or couple week or so)? i'm really lost and would appreciate some help! I hate my body right now and that makes me so unhappy :( Should I reverse diet even if I'm not restricting ?! I'm only 5'1 and have 20 pounds to lose.

This is my biggest struggle. I don't know if I actually LIKE what I'm doing or if I'm doing it because it is the best thing for the results I want. Do I want to do this kind of exercise because I WANT to, or is it that someone else is doing it and I'm like 'Oh neat I should try that." I should probably just try a few things out and see what I like best.
