Well it’s a bank holiday this weekend guys so I’m trying to get things wrapped up for the week, but some things test your patience. Also, we introduce you to a legend on the channel, the man the myth.

Hello all, Seeing that little engine sitting on the floor brings back happy memories. My first car was a 1937 Austin 7 Ruby. I built my engine from a box of spares, using a two bearing crankcase. None of the parts were matched, and the only work I did on the block was to deglaze the bores, and quite honestly I couldn't afford a set of new rings, so I just used the closest gap ones I could find for each bore. once assembled, it started and ran fine. You could always recognise an Austin Seven, by the rattle of the starting handle, which could not be withdrawn. The front oil seal was just a concaved washer ( oil thrower ), as far as I can remember. I also seem to remember that the conrods on the two bearing crank, had white metal scrapped bearings. I noticed that John's inlet manifold looks like it is going to have an SU carb fitted which should be better than the original Zenith side draft. Having said that, I drove that little car all over the Country, and apart from getting frozen because there was no heater, and the smell of OZONE coming from the ignition system, it was brilliant. Back then we didn't know what it was to have good brakes, and you certainly soon lernt clutch control in these cars. Also, because of the thin wheels and good ground clearance it would never let you down in the snow, which we had plenty of back in the sixties. Why did things get so complicated? With these cars, you could keep them going with just a few spanners, a screwdrive, and a set of feeler guages. You could have the engine out in a couple of hours on your own, and you could do a decoke in an hour, and be back running again. All the very best to you, Kind regards, Tony Marsh. North West Devon.

My Reliant's 850cc engine would salute its Austin 7 father, when after the war the 7 became obsolete Reliant bought all the tooling for the sidevalve and produced it themselves and when it came to upgrading looked at how BMC turned the 7 into the A series and simply copied the 850cc A series modifications but instead of using cast iron as BMC did, they continued to use all alloy making for a very very light motor that produced over 30hp in earlier form and the 850cc 40hp but pulling around a car that weighs about a 5th of a metal body vehicle thus able to produce 70+mpg and a 100mph-ish top end with some tuning (mine did on Zeals abandoned runway 96mph and it was screaming, gps speed not speedo speed and front end was flapping at the front as it was getting close to being lifted by the airspeed O.o)

Good to see more of John. He has a lot of knowledge about his car. I would encourage hm to contribute more to the videos. He should just ignore the presence of the camera.

What many people do not realize is that sometimes a "project" is NEVER MEANT TO BE FINISHED... The Austin is probably such a project... And if John is not going to actually race or exhibit the project then actually finishing said project will be totally anti-climatic for him. On the other hand, if it is going to be raced or exhibited then it should have been finished last Christmas. That is just the way it is !!!

What an amazing present on Good Friday! I thoroughly enjoyed John sharing about his car and I can’t wait for him to share his experience as well. He’s the missing piece since Paul left for his own business and John’s witty banter makes your channel feel complete again

There is a special tool that hooks under the camshaft and pushes down the valve so the rocker can slide straight in. They are a Unique engine to work on.

This is awesome. I like the normal engine rebuild stuff but seeing some classic car and engine work is even better. I hope we see more like this. I also feel your pain with Mercedes motors. I had similar issues with my 3500 V8 and it was easy once I learnt to basically retrain my brain to a totally different engineering outlook.

I have a suggestion: Could you film how you resize a main or rod big end bearing bore? I've been watching for a while and one thing I haven't seen you discuss how you do it. I know how it's basically done but I've never seen it. Maybe I've missed it and maybe you don't need to do it often but I think it would be interesting to a lot of people. Thanks!

Hello there Lee and The Gang ..... So good to see the Face behind the Voice ..... Now here is a bit of a 'Trick' When doing a 'Chain Change'.... Connect the 'New One' to the Already Installed one .... At a pinch you could just use a 'Cable-Tie' IF you did Not have a 'Master-Link' .... Use a Colour Marker Pen for easy identification. Turn the Engine until the 'New' Chain Replaces the 'Old' one. Break the chain at the 'Connection' ..... Jobs a Goodn' ..... :-) :-) :-) Naturally the Timing is Critical, One would Not want to bend any Valves, Just to add to the 'Cursing and Swearing' .... :-) :-) :-) Thanks for your Great Vidclips Best to ALL from ChCh, NZ

That MB cam/rocker arrangement looks similar to Datsun L-series, but twin cam, which makes sense because rumour has it that the L-series was a copy of MB.

Nothing wrong with the M110 / 280 DOHC Merc Mtrs..........Have built a few of them over the Years, and always loved the way they sound at revs...........not many inline 6`s give that delightful sound. Secret to assembly is to lay all items out on bench in manner of final Assembly in Motor with correct Chain. Later Versions came with Hydraulic Lifters which did make life easier, but not detrimental to that Twin Cam Sound. K-Jet were more HP than the Carb, and D-Jet Models. Biggest problem with these Motors is they are hard on Valve Guides and Stem seals.

Just a thought ... If anyone is dismantling unusual engines, might it be an idea to have a camera running whilst they do it and they leave verbal comments as they dismantle in order to make re-assembly easier ? You could build a Library of these things and maybe even Licence them out to others as an additional facet to the business ... ? Even if you didn't Licence them, they could be a tremendous help to your customers who decide to build the engine themselves ... although I am of course wary of you reducing the amount of work coming in and 'demystifying' what you do at Barum ...

As a machinist I understand all about boring and honing and milling but I am totally ignorant about crank grinding. Grinding the mains looks trivial, from what I can see (I think) when grinding the big end journals there is a follower how does this work if the crank has enough material to clean up but is badly say, (2 thou) out of round? I want to see more John!

Without knowing the manufacturer of the mercedes engine and not having a wide range of experience with car engines , but having knowledge of other German designed machinery in the form of laboratory anaylsers, I would have identified that stupid design immediately as German. The engine is slowly creeping up on that beautiful Austin 7 and as for 'purism' , who really wants to hand crank a car unless of course you're into latex and chains? However having watched further I discovered you really are into chains so maybe you should consider a vehicle with a hand crank.
