Maybe he should buy a different drill? My cheap-@55 drill from Home Depot 10 years ago has a bubble level built into it. Take him to a hardware store and let him wander around. Even if it's just Harbor Freight. The education on tools available will open up his world.

I had quite a few apprentices in my time and they never failed to amaze me with their antics. I spent fifteen minutes going through setup with one on a tripod level. When I was sure he understood the working I grabbed a tape measure and climbed up on my lift. I looked around and he was following me with the tripod over his shoulder.

This is what happens when the tradition of boys hanging out with their dads or even grandpas while they do tasks around the house is stopped. When that chain is broken, the basic knowledge of simple tool usage is lost and sets back a generation. I didn't use tools much as a kid but I still watched and learned and now utilize what I remember when doing simple projects.

I admit, I have used a spirit level to check if the bit is straight (difficult to tell when viewed from above). But I wouldn't tape it to the bit, the damage it could do if it flew off... 🫣 In my defence, being an old female, I had to teach myself.
