This reminds me of a particular dining room air conditioning system from my childhood. It had a very powerful, water-cooled, Carrier condensing unit paired with a large, noisy, air handlier. Adjacent to the door where waitresses would enter the kitchen were two, ordinary, unlabeled wall switches. One switch controlled the compressor and the other controlled the air handler. On more than one occasion, waitresses would respond to complaints of the room being too cold by turning off the air handler, but leaving the compressor running. Consequently, the evaporator would freeze up and when the air handler was eventually turned back on its motor would burn out. Once again, my dad would take the motor down to Mr. Parslow's shop to be rewound. Of the many systems my father serviced, I loved that Carrier condensing unit the best. It's belt driven compressor made the most wonderful sound when it started up! Back in those days, our city's water was unmetered, so many large refrigeration units were water-cooled - directly from the city water supply via head-pressure-controlled water valves. Discharge water from the condensers went into the sewer, which at that time led straight to the Hudson River. From a refrigeration standpoint, you can imagine how practical and efficient such systems were, with no condensor fans, cooling towers, or water pumps to worry about. I'd be surprised if many water cooled condensers are still using city water like that anywhere today.

Great 📹.!. I would put a nylon pump saver - motor coupling assembly on the pump/motor. Reduces heat transfer from pump to motor n reduces wear n tear. Beer company should have put them on. Banner sells them or online to wholesale beer parts.. Glycol looks dirty. N as I commented earlier, I believe the beer line cleaning company left water in those 2 lines. When cleaning beer lines with chemicals u run water through lines to rinse out chemicals then beer is run through so no water is left in line to freeze up. . Maybe forgot to flush out those 2. Great job as always. Thanks for sharing 👍

When I first hear you say that they were instructed to turn of the pumps and leave the compressor on, my first thought was "wouldn't it make more sense to do it the other way around if the issue is that the lines are frozen? If you turn off the compressor so it doesn't cool the glycol anymore, but leave the pumps running, then it should send warm glycol into the lines that should be able to the defrost those lines" Am I completely off on that thought?

Any reason why the compressor power couldn't be interlocked so that the pump switches have to be on before it will run? A relay or two seems like it'd be a very effective solution.
@c117ls73 жыл бұрын
That situation makes you want to install a relay energized off of the pump 1 switch so that the compressor wouldn't come on until pump 1 was switched on. Could make it a pain for diagnosis in the future but it would help prevent the freezing up.

It’s interesting to me that the compressor doesn’t have a safety circuit, this seems like a mini chiller, they have flow switches that won’t allow the compressor to start with no flow on the glycol side.... also if something happens to the glycol levels it can freeze. It only takes 1 genius to put straight water in there haha

What’s silly and insane is how incompetent our sales guys are. For a top tier residential retrofit company, they make over six figures, have a huge lack of attention to detail, and barely make notes on anything. We call to go over the jobs in the morning and they can barely remember the job or lie to us, as if we won’t go there in a few minutes and see everything. At our Wednesday job, we called our supervisors to let them know all the issues with the job to get a determination on whether to pull off or not, and of course we were basically just told to figure it out and some help would be coming. These silly, insane, greedy bastards had me 20’ up on a ladder with a multi tool at arms reach cutting a 12”x12” hole out of an encapsulated eave made of cement-fiber board, all so we could get a drill in to punch a hole into the standard bird block and have enough space to get our line set into the attic and through the lid of the second story closet where the stack up was at. I’ll be refusing to do that ever again as a safety issue. They’ll need a scissor lift next time or it’s a no go.

So now you got a flush light... Did it survive? Most of the somewhat better flashlights today seem to be rather waterproof or water resistant to a degree.

12:43 You don't have to babysit them necessarily-- just take the last three work orders/invoices (with your procedures and eventual diagnosis) you have for that restaurant regarding their glycol units, sanitize them of any sensitive data and leave it by the sign near the units you post for them of what they can look for using the layman's Mk1 eyeball (without opening the units). (And what not to do even if the beverage company tells them to do it.) . Things like potential issues with switches due to the flickering back-lighting, irregular potentially malfunctioning thermostats/sensors, rough start on a pump indicating a pump possibly going bad would be things a John Q Public could potentially spot and with luck it leads to better information regarding service calls on those units.
@farbe1233 жыл бұрын
I like to tell you that the flickering lights on the switches are no problem. The switches are lighted by neon bulbs. These bulbs are in no way needed for the function of the swiches e.g. closing of the load contacts. Even if you would rip bulbs right out, the load contacts would still work. Flickering in neon bulbs is caused by them loosing neon gas and thus increasing the starting voltage. The heating that you see is not actually correlated with the bulb. Heating would be caused by contact resistance producing a voltage drop while flowing current, creating power loss. I would think that the switches are underrated for the job or that the connectors are bad. These terminal connectors are bad for vibrating Equipment. If you want a solid solution, change the switches with a different type that offers screw terminals or a different connection style.

You mentioned in this and the previous video on the glycol coolers the set-point was 28 degrees F, which to my mind invites line freeze-ups as it is below 32 F. Why not set the glycol temp just above the freezing point of water so there is no chance of a freeze-up, no matter how much the alcohol content or sugar content might depress the freezing point? As for two lines freezing with the others flowing, those two could be low-usage or near the center of the line bundle where they get disproportionately more coolant flow surrounding the beverage delivery tubes.
@jpcallan972253 жыл бұрын
@@junkman8742 Salt water and propylene glycol / water mixture aren't the problem freezing - the beer, ale and root beer are freezing within the lines jacketed by the glycol coolant. These beverages are freezing because their freezing point must be near 28 degrees.
