One thing I’ve learned from a lot of these KZbin Audio Engineers is that. Every so often they change gears and call it the best decision of their lives. I use to think you need the best gears to make great music. Just use what you have and learn your gears. Hardwares are great focus of your craft until you get where you want to be.

@@ColtCapperrune I just upgraded to a new Mac Studio after years of running my recording sessions off a MacBook Pro, game changer. I only changes because I was forced to using Final Cut and Logic (slow AF). All the rendering is a small fraction of what it once was. I agree, every 10 years you need to upgrade. As for ProTools, I regularly record in logic, mix & master in logic. If I need the help of my favorite local engineer, I'll export clean stems to him because he works in ProTools. It's not that big of a deal. I work most efficiently in Logic, that's the most important data point. DAWs are interchangeable, productivity is not. For Hardware I use 2 Apollo x8ps, a Satellite and an arrow all chained together to track my band in a studio live setup. Yes absolutely UA had some stability issues over the past 5 years, but they've fixed the issues. The most important part of my rig is the OX box, and the Townsend Sphere (bought by UA) microphone for my guitars and vocals. With the new Mac Studio, the system screams. Cool video man, thanks for the breakdown.

I think Antelope also offer high I/O count interfaces, like the 32 and even 64- channel Galaxy. For me, when I upgrade, I think I will go with Lynx Aurora (N), with my old interface on ADAT. I can live with 16 or 24 channels, if the synths and effects are off a mixer with a good number of aux channels. But 3-4k is still a lot of money for an interface for me, for now, nevermind 5k+5k.

Yep, recording overdubs into sessions with complex hardware and plugin setups will generally mean there’s lots of latency going on… what I do as a free solution is create a separate session for overdubs that contains a full mix bounce. The Con is it doesn’t have the flexibility of adjusting the mix on the fly within the overdub session, but the Pro is that it can now record at unnoticeably low latency since the session only contains one audio track. Then you can easily import tracks from the overdub sessions back into the Mix session, such as new vocal tracks, by using the Import Session Data feature. Import Session Data can be found under the file menu, import - or with the shortcut option+shift+I on a Mac, or alt+shift+I on Windows.

Now I have 2 ULN-8 pluged with CAT5 in my mix room and 1 more in the drum booth... I love my setup! Thanks!

Always pumped to see you with new studio upgrades Colt! Just hearing a little bit of the perks that come with Avid's interfaces definitely blows the Apollo's out of the water! Side note, I believe I had seen a setting in UAD Console to route the most recent gen rack mounted Apollo's monitor outputs to be whatever you wanted it to be, I could be wrong as I haven't had a need to remove my main outs, but I believe it's possible. Congrats on the new toys Colt!

Super relatable video! I’m curious to see how this works out in the long term. I was close to going with Avid for my Atmos rig, but decided to go with Focusrite instead due to Avids rocky behavior 😅

Have you considered any of the DAD interfaces? Very low latency round trip, massive I/O, TB3 interface. Core 256 or AX Thunder Core, both phenomenal. Massive amount of I/O plus full monitor controller built in, with all surround formats, ATMOS etc. I still own HDX rigs as well, but thinking about moving to these all together. 👍🏼👍🏼
@julesfradet1556 ай бұрын
His main issue is latency compensation of hardware inserts. Especially in parallel. Hdx + hdio/lynx aurora is what you want for that. The other interfaces don’t solve that specific issue that is crucial in his workflow.

I feel your pain. I used a TDM and then HD Accel system for years and experienced the same frustration with having a second piece of software to manage and manual calculation for hardware inserts with my Apollo 16 system, but the lack of plugins supporting the AVID cards at the time pushed me U.A. Now, the subscription price keeps me from going back. I know “being a professional reasoning” and all but it just pisses me off not having a choice. Good luck in Avid-land again and give us an honest review in the future whether it’s as good as you remembered it.

With your Sweetwater connections it might have been better for the MTRX II, better integration, I know more costly, you may find the studio only gives you 128 you will need more as you will find, especially if you get to film someday. Been running HDX 3 since the inspection of the card. Good to see your progression, going in the right direction. All the best.

Yeah brother! Happy for you!!! Can you do a video about this same topic, connecting 32 I/o all analog from console to interface but using more affordable brands and systems, that way most of us would benefit! I’m trying to decide what interface to buy and pretty much would need 32 I/o but don’t have this kinda money! What would you recommend? Thank gou

Question for ya. How's pro tools with it's midi functions/features? I started with pro tools and mainly recorded vocals/a few instruments for clients. Once I started doing music production as well, I use ableton and it's intutive and amazing. However has latency issues and doesn't have the robust mixing features/latency features that pro tools has. Wondering how well midi works in pro tools? Or is it more of a live instrument recording type of DAW? Thank you for any input you have on this!!

very interesting...... the converters in the Apollo are old and surpassed by converters on current moderately priced audio interfaces.

HDX all the way for tracking! Oh and non-DSP monitors too. No point in going this route if your monitors have a bunch of latency too.

As a composer I have only used VSTs and I don’t have any hardware. But lately, I’ve been seriously considering buying some hardware for my percussion bus and string bus. I said all that to say that I have a Scarlett Focusrite Solo and I will need an interface that has ins and outs for hardware. I was thinking about going Apollo, but now I won’t. So thanking for being candid and making this video. It helped me not to make a bad choice 😂

Welcome back to HD. That chassis, I bought it in January to plug to a new Mac Studio M2 Ultra, HDX, I've been using the I/O since 2013. With an OMNI as well. I don't even remember how to calculate delay times for my hardware inserts, instant recalls, no matter what, the vocalist can just come an sing the session again if he or she wanted. The fans are of the devil. Specially the HD/IO, it starts gently but once you realize it's way too noisy, There are many ways to replace it for a quieter one. Careful with the chassis and updating the HDX card's firmware, many people has bricked them because it's just how it is and AVID won't take any responsibility. They came out with a plan that if you payed I think it was like 600 bucks a year per card, they would replace them in case they bricked them during a firmware update. In my case, when the chassis is plugged and I put the Mac Studio into sleep mode, and try wake the computer it forces a system restart. Let me know how does it work for you. My Omni needs to go away, and replace it for Matrix. Lots of cash. And definitely you want to get the I/O opened to clean the dust inside from time to time. That thing has never, ever failed on me for 10 years. I've left it on when leaving for a casual walk that suddenly turned into a 3 day work trip many times, came back, still working, The converters, pure magic. Top end gear. I thought I was on the wrong side of the road when watching your videos cos you used the Apollo the whole time, but somehow now I feel kinda better. lol

Nice. I love HDX…have been doing that for many years now with different Apogee converters. They are my favorite, work with HDX. Currently using the Symphony MK II with a Sonett chasis for the HD card. The cool thing about the Symphony is that it is modular and you can make requests, so I have 32 analog I/O with that. Love Pro Tools too…agreed that it’s just one of those things. It’s a language you can’t unlearn, and you have to stick with it…even with all the headaches. I have worked with Carbon, the MTXR and older avid/digi converters. I think they all sound amazing and they would probably be my second choice. The only thing about the Carbon specifically is it sounds a little too pristine and digital or something to me, but the hyper detail is impressive. Apogee sounds like how the music is supposed to sound to me. Yeah for the card(s) chasis I think you’re gonna want to do the rack version. Just more ergonomic I think.

Congrats on the new Rig!! I recall something similar to the Apollo Delay compensation you referenced. It would just work, no issues … and then one day it stopped. My solution was to use i/O plugin in StudioOne/Logic Pro. I’ve been considering switching over to the Lynx AuroaN 24ch : )

I have been conserving the Carbon interface but not sure if I should go with the Oria instead. If I were a recording studio I would go HDX right away. The Carbon is over kill for what I want almost. I have thought about now using something like a MOD Dwarf to put plugins a input and record the dry to and re add the plugins in the DAW after. If I was going all ProTools the HDX system is a Carbon is a no brainer. I'm going to a mix and mastering and production is a simply a personal hobby. This is why the Carbon would be over kill for myself in comparison for how well the Oria integrates and mixed stereo Atmos setup. Again, if with Atmos I just did Protools it would be a much easier choice. The Oria is just so easy for anything. You can simply play a bluetooth video on your computer and the Oria instantly plays the Atmos content... so having to do any sort of menu diving. But again, I think I might not care about that so much and will prefer my inputs being able to have plugins without latency and the sends to analogue equipment be time corrected without hassle. Protools without a high end avid interface setup is actually worse than other DAW's... but once you have their whole eco system, it's a land of no headaches lol. In your world everyone you know are using Protools, but someone starting again will not know what their world will be using. If I was in your position I would have made that move a long time ago... and I'd be buying from reverb lol. I still do not know what to do... hopefully I have the means to try things out at the time becuase it is not a easy one to predict.

As I record, mix, and "produce" as a hobby (as I'm sure a lot of your subscribers are as well) in My little "studio" sometimes I get a little lost with some of these videos because I use Studio one as my DAW and a Presonus Studio 1824c interface that does everything I need and doesn't cost me a small fortune. That being said as a Cyclist who gets Paid to work on and sell Bikes. I TOTALLY get what you're saying! It's all about what allows you to do your job as efficiently and as repeatedly as possible. So the proper tools are SO important in that aspect. I'm sure if I was working in the industry I'd be doing exactly what your doing...choosing the best products to get the workflow and outcome I need to be competitive in said field! Cheers Colt and keep doing what you do!!

Avids like the greediest company and the most behind in features. it’s crazy that people still fuck with them rather than learning to use a superior daw like reaper that’s also FOR the people, not their own greed.
@stephenpenwolf6 ай бұрын
I totally agree - Once I took the time to learn REAPER I dropped AVID and never looked back… the greed, coupled with an inferior product, was just too much to ignore. The folks at COCKOS have a wonderful sense of humanity, coupled with technological talent - unfortunately, a rare commodity these days.

@@micturner_9167 very different, Reaper is consistently updated, improved, and completely customizable to any workflow. Also, isn’t owned by a greedy corporation. Also, updates are totally free between intergral versions.

I was looking into the MTRX studio for a while but then decided to take the plunge to a Focusrite Red 16L. Also dante compatible with connectivity for my HD I/O's. I feel like Avid may be jacking the price a little on the MTRX for my taste. Even with the DSP acceleration a one thousand dollar price jump was not in the cards for me. Great video Colt! Excited to see the final studio in all its glory!

The sound quality and integration is just so far ahead of the Red system. We used to run both, but gave up the focusrite stuff in favour of more matrix/DAD-gear.
