Great video! Ive been a nurse for 2 years now and have always been shy. I remember starting out and being SO scared to call the MDs when I needed to for my patients. But it really has helped me come out of my shell. Being a nurse is the best decision I have ever made!

+Jeth Ski Hi Jeth! I must say that I'm a very similar type of person, always scared to speak up. I also just graduated from nursing school and felt that our education didn't teach us about communication either. Very similar situation. I'm just wondering you've been out on the field for a year now, so what has helped you get through that? Thank you!
@julyski65448 жыл бұрын
+Shirla Shan hi! I certainly am still a bit shy now but not during work. it's been a year since graduation and it made me come out of my shell. I had to speak up every time I had a question or something or if I make an assessment that needed to be reported. I also always ask the other more experienced nurses even to the point where they get annoyed and get mad at me. but I didn't care. it's not like they don't get paid more for no reason. you know what I mean? and it's just you have to or you risk losing license for negligence or something bad. I usually ask the other nurses before I call the MD. because MDs are busy too and they'll lose confidence in you if you keep calling em for every little thing. I always made sure I know my shit about my patient before I call the MD but sometimes I miss stuff and it's not a comfortable situation... so I still get so anxious because of that. but I don't let the mean MDs drag me down too much cause some of them can't even start a damn IV. LOL I actually started to enjoy calling people up with the phones. Lol like I liked calling the lab, the pharmacy. housekeeping. and other places. and SOME doctors. also, my passivity also kinda helped when I round with cocky doctors that yell at me when I was too slow to bring up stuff fromn the charts, or basically when I'm just being clueless specially since I'm a new nurse. overall, working as a staff nurse definitely built up my confidence. stress is enevitable but the longer you're on the floor, the stronger you are. I actually became less shy since I started working. I worked as adult icu nurse in a tiny hospital. I think you're gonna be great. it's scary at first but you'll become more assertive, because all nurses have to be.

I'm so glad you made this video! I am in no way a shy or introverted person. I'm an extrovert. Or as my mama likes to say "I have never met a stranger!" I like to think that if I'm warm, and funny, and communicative; then my patients will feel like they got to know me instead of "just another nurse who care of me" attitude. I also work with a lot of shy nurses or quiet nurses. They are that way within the team, but I like to think that they are that way because they are coming up with the best plan of action in their patients care and are totally focused on that.

Oh wow! I wrote this comment 10 months ago and now I've been working as a nurse for 7 months. I've definitely learned a lot, like being shy can be quite challenging as a nurse. But when you're in the same environment day after day, you really become used to being around people and talking to people, it's just part of human nature to become accustomed to it. There's nothing wrong with being shy, but just don't let that shyness interfere with patient care. Like if you have to speak up for the pt, you have to speak up. And usually that protective instinct takes over and outshadows the shyness. Being shy also has its benefits. I feel like you are a little more in tune with people's feelings and you're more sensitive, which makes you a better nurse for really caring for the patient and providing compassionate care.

Thank you for sharing Shirla! I am now still trying to survive Med-Surg in nursing school though lol. Is there any tips how to get through nursing school? How to study for exams?
@shirlashan76607 жыл бұрын
Hi Chelsi, thanks for your reply! I think one of the best advice I got going through nursing school was not to slack. People's lives and care are in your hands and really learning the material and not cutting corners going through nursing school will go a longgg way when you start working. As a new grad, you learn the most updated information in nursing and you have that knowledge to bring to the table when you start working. When it comes to studying for exams, it's just like studying for any exam. Do practice questions.. Know your ABC's. Always safety first. That's always the answer! Good luck!! Also, nursing school is really tough. Surround yourself with your classmates who will be your support system going through it!

I've always been a shy person as well and to be honest I wasn't sure if I had what it took to be a nurse. But I love how you said that the whole process has changed you into a better version of yourself. I'm hoping that through nursing school and all the experience I gain, I can start to realize the reason why I want to be a nurse in the first place- which is to be an advocate for my patients and do what I need to do to be an all around great nurse. I'm only in my first semester but your videos have truly inspired me, they're very easy to relate to and I can't wait for more! Thanks Caroline! :)

I know exactly what you mean by "ambivert"!! I am horrible in front of people when I know little about what I am doing, it's the same in clinicals. I feel so lost and awkward there but I know that once I have my "groove" figured out with assessments and patient interaction I will be great. I have worked in a clinical lab for the past 12 years and I have ZERO issues with shyness there, I know what is going on at all times and if something goes down I am on it but get me onto the floor and suddenly I'm back in elementary school trying to hide behind my moms shirttails. Thanks for the videos, they really help get my motivation where it needs to be, especially through VERY tough MedSurg days (like today, yes that was me whining). I actually thought of you this afternoon before my pharm exam... I had to stop the anxiety and force myself to become "present" in my classroom - we'll see if it paid off. Thanks again!!!

Hi Caroline! I can honestly say that without your videos I probably would not still be inspired to go through nursing school. However the other day when I was working as a CNA I was discussing how excited I was to have gotten accepted into university for the nursing program to one of the nurses there who I am good friends with, and she was very excited for me as well. Some of the other nurses who were in the room while we were discussing this just looked at me like I was crazy and that I shouldn't be doing this. Finally another older nurse came up to me a few minutes later when I was working and said '' Are you sure you really want to be a nurse''? "Think of the long hours that you are giving up, the weekends, days and nights". Thing is I have already prepared myself for that. She also said ' "Try being on your feet for 12 hours, try dealing with death almost every shift, this isn't something you are really looking forward to is it'' ? Thankfully the nurse I had originally told that I got accepted into nursing school told me not to listen to her, and that I will love being a nurse, that its in my blood.. but ever since that day I can't seem to think that what she's saying is right, along with other family members and friends. I am tired of people doubting me. Any thoughts? Love you girl and thanks for your inspiration with these videos! Sincerely, Amanda

First I'll say that you are one of 4 who has inspired me to start making nursing videos. When I was in HS I was pretty introverted, however as an adult I am much more extroverted. I think what is the key that you mentioned is being on top of your material, and that can mean knowing your stuff and being in control when dealing with patients and families. Confidence goes a long way. As far as your unit coordinator goes getting you the help you needed. That is what a leader needs to do. Basically all she did was ask for what she needed, it was that simple. The Nursing Supervisor is responsible for allocating resources and had no idea your unit was in need until the phone call was made. One thing that helped me a lot was being a clinical instructor and also teaching classes at my hospital. I have absolutely no problem with public speaking anymore. In fact I really enjoy it, a lot. Give me a forum and I'll run with it.

I am in my fourth semester and I am so scared. I am trying to get my day organized and I have been working on a "brain" but I still feel as though I am lost. Do you have any suggestions on how to approach the day - what do you do to get organized and any tips? thanks

This is timely. I just had clinical at a nursing home for my required CNA class last night and I'm feeling really discouraged because my feedback was that I'm not aggressive enough and not chatty enough. I'm kind of the opposite of you: I am actually really good at public speaking and do okay in large groups, but I am not good at one on one chitchat. When it comes to care, I would say I'm assertive. I've gotten similar feedback at pretty much every job that I have had- sometimes it feels like being introverted is considered the worst trait in our society and it's so frustrating! I wouldn't even really consider myself shy or particularly anxious, but I don't feel like I should be yammering at people while feeding them or just inviting myself into their rooms to chat about the weather or Wheel of Fortune. I guess that's what's expected of me, though. I do start conversations here and there and at least introduce myself and tell them about what I'm doing, but there comes a point where I feel like it would be just annoying to force a conversation. Just kind of wondering what other people's thoughts are on this, especially yours. I'm sure I'd do fine in something like hospice or dementia unit, but in the meantime I'm sure I'm going to get this kind of feedback a lot and am worried it will also hinder my chances of finding a job. Thanks so much for your videos!

I wanted to know if you could do a video on how to communicate and delegate effectively to CNAs and Unit clerks. I sometimes delegate tasks like glucose measurement or a set of vitals, or even help moving a patient, sometimes it just does'nt get done and I understand that. I'm a new grad nurse so I dont know if where I am training, they may not be respecting me, and sometimes take advantage of me too. Ive already discussed it with my preceptor, but I just wanted to know if you can give some tips for new grad nurses. Thanks Caroline.

Thanks for the video Caroline! Love your channel. Could you do a video on applying to nursing school? I am having trouble trying to word my thoughts into essay format for admission. Thanks!

Some people think I shouldn't consider becoming a nurse and I don't think I'm right for it because I'm an introvert But I'm not interested any other health career. Being a lab tech or an X-ray would suck! Hardly anyone choose those careers. And I don't want to just work in records or transcription--I don't like indirect involvement

Hi! I am super shy and I think that's why I didn't make it in nursing school.My first attempt, I flunked out because of grades in 2 classes(D's and one being med math),my second time,my grades were GREAT,BUT, during one of my lab skills check offs,I messed up cath care(sterile field). When they told me I had to leave, one of my proffs told me maybe I should look into another hed field.Is she right? Will being super nervous during lab skills check off hinder me from nursing?How do you overcome it?

Dominique Chehlaoui Hi Dominique! I definitely have moments where I am socially awkward on the job. I guess I just deal with it as best as I can & then think about how I can do it better next time. The only way (I think) to become socially intelligent is to practice in real life. And don't be so hard on yourself when it doesn't go well.... I still have many times where I say something weird or do something strange.... but they are much less now because many times I can say to myself: "I've been through this before." Keep trying... don't let one person tell you who or what you are. You can become who you want to be :) xoxo - Caroline

your videos are really great and helpful especially to a newly registered nurse like me. I just passed the local board exam here in the philippines, I'm currently looking for volunteer/job opportunities until I find myself a potential employer. I was wondering if you could give some tips on writing the best nursing resume especially for newly grads and for those who lack clinical experience as a registered nurse? like how to make it stand out and not be generic. Thanks and keep up these videos!
