I remember reading that Native Americans took horses into water before trying to ride them, instead of the cowboy way of “breaking” them. I do know from having a horse when I was a teen, he liked to splash water before attempting to cross it, even if the water wasn’t deep.

@@Curioushorse This is my first time here, but it seemed to me that she totally trusts you! I love watching horses swim! JR at Homestead Horsemanship swims his horses in the river on his property, and it's always a beautiful thing to watch! And a very valuable training tool too! He has a 3 year old Clydesdale rescue that loves the water so much that he practically purrs! Last year it sounded like a purr, but now it's more like a full throated moan of pleasure! It's hilarious! If you want to see it, go to that channel, then look in the playlist for Oliver. There is at least 1 video on swimming with him from last year, and 1 from this year. There are also swimming videos with other horses too. In some he explains how it's a helpful training tool. Although it seems that maybe you already have a handle on that. But unless your bodyweight is totally supported by the water it's too early to ride your yearling. So please don't do it for long periods, or too often. A little bit in the water like this, now and then, should be ok. She's big for a yearling, and you're not a really heavy guy, but she still has a baby's spine tendons and ligaments for another couple of years at least. I really like how you try to set her or them up for success, and keep it short and sweet. A pleasant and fun experience. No wonder your horses seem so eager to be with you and please you! I subbed, and liked the video, and look forward to seeing more! From Barb in Edmonton Alberta. And have a great birthday and a wonderful year! ❤🐎🐴🐎❤

@@Curioushorse They can be a good thing or a bad one. It depends how they're used, how much and when. Steve Smith, a very successful British trainer says the the problem is not the treats themselves, but is in giving them by hand. He uses treats, but says he only ever gives them in a bucket, or on the ground, etc. But I don't think he labelled the video(s) where he discussed it. He says treats in the hand cause the horses to learn to disrespect you. Not a fan of anyone getting on any horse under age 4. Especially not an adult weight rider. A 3yo horse's spinal column is not yet mature (some horses take longer.) Riding an immature back shortens the horse's working life. We need to stop riding babies.

Why sit on a baby 3 years old?
@Curioushorse3 ай бұрын
I do not believe in riding a horse until they are 4 years old. Even at 4 years old, I think it should initially be restricted to 10-15 riding intervals,for a light weight rider that is WAY below the 20% weight ratio recommendation. At 3 yr 5 months I do believe it was ok to put light weight on Maverick back in the water for 1-2 minutes to practice the mount. I probably weigh less than 12% of Mavericks weight. *In this video Maverick was 3 years and 5 months. I will likely wait until 6 months before practicing this outside the water. I appreciate your comment. I am extremely careful with my babies, I will do more research to ensure this was acceptable. Again this channel is about redefining what’s best for our horses.
