I grew up in NJ, a town over from where Steeetlight Manifesto formed. I remember when I was in elementary school, we had a substitute music teacher for an extended period of time who always played his trombone for us and did all kinds of cool sound effects and I just remembered being so fascinated. Fast forward a few years, around 2009, I saw Streetlight Manifesto for the first time, and the music teacher I had in elementary school just so happened to be the trombonist for Streetlight Manifesto! I’ve seen the band at least a dozen times and out of the hundreds of shows I’ve attended (punk, hardcore), they’ve always been my favorite to see live BY FAR. They play Starland Ballroom around the same time pretty much every year and it’s always a show I refuse to miss

That’s a great story, You’re very luck to live near them! I live in São Paulo, Brazil, and back in 2013 when they announced that they would go on a hiatus and stop touring, I decided to go to their “last” shows, no matter what. I had never travelled to the US, so I had to get a visa, then bought the tickets and at the end of that year I found myself rocking at starland ballroom in NJ lol. I burned through some (a lot) money I had saved but it was SO worth. I ended up seeing them again in NY in 2015 and 2018, and while those were great, it wasn’t the same as the shows in starland. Those two shows I attended were special.

Everyone in this band is insanely talented, but the most insane one (and most underrated I think) is the drummer, Chris Thatcher. It took me a while to really realize how phenomenal he is, and since you didn’t mention the drums at all I figured you missed them the first time around like I did. Go back and listen again and just listen to how wildly off the cuff this guy is, if you haven’t already. He’s CONSTANTLY changing what he’s doing from phrase to phrase, with seemingly no sense of consistency or structure at all, but in the best way possible. One of the most underrated drummers of all time. And welcome to my favorite band on the planet. They’re like the TOOL of ska music.

I got my brother to watch this video and he's going through this now too. “I can’t stop smiling”. Same! Phenomenal band, phenomenal song! Soo wonderful to see you enjoying it. Streetlight Manifesto offers many tiers above a standard punk or ska band in the constant evolution of songs, the obviously skilled geekery of all the horns and a great thoughtful vision from the outset. I have a hard time saying any one band is my favorite because of all the different genres I listen to but gun to my head I'd say Streetlight. They were my first live show 20+ years ago and I've seen them 8 times. Their performances are phenomenal. There's something special about a large band crammed on a stage playing a small venue packed with people who all know and sing every lyric to any song they play...as someone else said, it's like church. I've always thought of Streetlight Manifesto as progressive ska. Good shit! "Here's to life" and "Everything Went Numb" are great too. The beef of the bari sax in the intro to Everything Went Numb is just fantastic. Makes me smile every time.

The Dead Kennedys are a classic hardcore band from California back in the 80's. Their bassist, Klaus Flouride, has some intense bass lines. Please add them to the list.

Osker is amazing, my band used to cover Panic, it was so good. Still love the quote I saw from Devon "while you have gallons of mohawks and leather jackets telling you that they do what they want, I don't believe them...I respect the person that says, "I don't care for that" because there is no extreme, it's pure sincerity. Punk is doing what you want despite the infiltrators, outside of the skateboards and shoes and hair and patches and the diets and the tattoos""

The “Keasbey nights” album is a masterpiece. So much so that Streetlight even re-recorded the entire album. I personally prefer Catch22’s original version, probably because that was my first listen. But Streetlights’ version is obviously better recorded/mixed and closer to what Kalnoky envision. You being a bass AND a trumpet player, you really should have a listen. The “Walkin Away” bass line along with the muted trumpet is : *chef’s kiss* !

Seeing you get excited and smile about these punk and ska songs that I’ve grown up on and loved really makes me get excited and smile too! Streetlight Manifesto is the band I’ve seen live the most, over 30 times. You are correct in assuming that they are awesome live, and I highly recommend you see them! The band, the music, the crowd - the energy is 11/10. Your excitement from the album recording shows me you would have the best time at their shows! As mentioned by others, The Suicide Machines would be a great one to check out. “Hey! (Ska)” is super fun. Keep checking out Streetlight Manifesto. Tomas and the band are immaculate composers and performers, and hard to top!

I had the good fortune to see Blue Meanies live a few times. I remember a show at 7th Street Entry vividly where they opened for Suicide Machines. Billy Spunke was selling merch, and I purchased a picture LP that includes Pave the World, F.O.R.D, Ace of Spades, and Happy Together. Their shows were so fun.

Okay, so I toured with them on Ska Against Racism. We had to follow them every night. How tf do you follow Pave The World.l?! They blew us off the stage every single night. All really stellar dudes. Bob (drummer) was super nice to me. I’ll never forget that. A lot of the bands on that tour really made an imprint on my personal character. ESPECIALLY Dan from MU330 and Mike Park. Big love for all of those bands. I can’t say enough nice things about them.

There´s more to ska than flip flops learned in one SM song. Their musical expression is amazing, feel free to look more into them :) Live the audience sings along to the horn lines and you see that everyone picks their own favourite instrument to sing along to cause there´s so much going on.
