It's really brilliant, no one stops to think about the fact that cautionary tales exist for a very specific reason, and it's ridiculous to blame people in the past for not learning lessons they were never taught. Apollo, Aphrodite and Ares were on the Trojan side. But let's be honest, my boi Apollo had to do all the godly job helping the Trojans
@silverpact1008Ай бұрын
@MarianGonzalez-gt1wd Aphrodite was one of the top 5 war deities in the Greek pantheon. Ares was top 2. Apollo was just there because they prayed to him SUPER HARD. Those three were up against pretty much the entire rest of the Greek Pantheon. Hera and Athena teamed up because of the competition, yes, but also because Aphrodite cheated on Haephestus, which to be fair, is a large part of the reason Ares was on the Trojan's side anyways. Poseidon? Zeus? Athena? Hera? Hermes? Hell, even Hades! The only reason Demeter didn't join in is because she didn't want to help the side that got Hades' help. The odds were stacked against the Trojans from the beginning in terms of deific aid. And keep in mind, the Trojans were STILL WINNING. Because Aphrodite and Ares' divine blessings on troops in war time are just that good. The greeks even had Agamemnon, Achilles, Odyseus, and so many more historic heroes. The Trojans had playboy Paris and Hector the madlad. And a whole lot of war buffs from their gods. And big walls.

(in case someone else wants to sing along too) Lyrics: When I was in high school I read the Odyssey, and the Iliad, Aeneid Lots of Greek and Roman tales I thought they were laughable The people, not the poems What kind of person sees a freaky wooden horse and doesn't bail? But I am older now and so much more mature And since I finished college I've had time for self-reflection I'd like to apologize to all the Trojans I insulted I should have realized the horse was just a misdirection Snakes! I forgot about snakes I forgot that the guy who tried to stab the horse pretty soon after got brutally killed by snakes Fifty-foot long snakes Coming from the ocean That's an omen Jesus Christ, I wouldn't wanna know 'em I'm sorry Trojans for the times that I made fun of you Can't make good choices when you're cursed by the gods It's nigh impossible to figure out what they want you to do And if it's horse vs snake, I'll take the horse's odds Let's talk psychological The people on that beach just saw a man get bit to death along with his two little boys In time mythological I'd find that ample reason to follow through on any action that the dead tried to avoid If someone said "God strike me dead!" and then got hit by lightning What would you think about the claims that they just made? I know that there's context and that it's complicated But there is little time for nuance in these counts of eight So, snakes! How to forget about snakes How to forget that part I read ten times in Latin Swear to God I studied classics Snakes! Or was it one snake? You would think that I would know my snake specifics since I put them in my lyrics I'm sorry Trojans for the times that I made fun of you At least you knew how many snakes that you saw It's hard to act right when the gods give you these contradicting clues And I'd take a wooden horse over any scaly maw If I were Orpheus, I'd turn Become a lesson to be learned Why should I trust the god of death? My story hadn't happened yet And I am not more wise than Icarus up in the skies I'da given anything to see the sun, so what's a pair of wings? And I know this is comedy But sometimes it is odd to me That we lack any empathy for cautionary tales Sometimes heroes aren't brave Sometimes they earn an early grave But the last folks they save are those who learn from how they failed I'm sorry Trojans for the times that I made fun of you Now I won't let a single horse in my house It's just good practice even if the horse isn't full of little dudes 'Cause when it's you plus horse then even two's a crowd I'm sorry Trojans for the times that I made fun of you Can't make good choices when you're cursed by the gods It's nigh impossible to figure out what they want you to do and if it's horse vs snake, I'll take the horse's odds Ooh, ooh (hiss)

Another absolutely amazing song, also very informative. I never knew about the Snakes. Edit: To be fair, I'd want to see 50 foot long Snakes, I wouldn't want to be killed by one but I'd definitely like to see one. Additionally I think this is complete and utter proof that Titanoboa were alive during the Trojan war, yes in reality they weren't venomous, but semi-aquatic 50 foot long Snakes fits up perfectly with Titanoboas. I'm going to have to inform the next palaeontologist I meet of this amazing fact so that it can be further researched. After thinking about it a bit more I've realised that this definitely means they are still alive today, the only reason we don't see them more often is because they are still waiting for the guests to arrive at their birthday party (As proven by the photograph briefly shown on screen in this video.)
@saltytyranitar6981Ай бұрын
This comment is painfully paleontologically inaccurate. Titanoboa was a 50ft long river snake. The relict apex predator still tragically waiting for someone to recognize their birthday is clearly one of the ocean-dwelling 40-45ft long snakes Palaeophis and Gigantophis, both from Egypt and thus in direct proximity to Troy. Titanoboa is having an entirely different unrecognized birthday party

@Marijke-PerryАй бұрын
I'll sympathize with Paris. Terms and conditions unclear, he was just a little stupid. I personally find the versions where Helen has autonomy in her elopement more interesting, and while Paris is, absolutely, a coward by the standards of Ancient Greek morality, I think if we're rehabilitating Ancient Greek mythological figures, he's one worth revisiting!
@geekacelol8982Ай бұрын
@@Marijke-Perry While I’m personally not convinced Helen went willingly, it’s obviously open to interpretation. Regardless, I think my problem with Paris is more that he could’ve stopped the war from happening by returning Helen, and then didn’t. But still, point stands: it’s more nuanced than people give it credit for
@Oznerock29 күн бұрын
@@Marijke-Perry Having Helen go willingly is weird to me, given how the genius solution that Odysseus gave was that she should pick her own husband - meaning she at least choose Menelaus. If she's not in some way forced to go, either by Aphrodites' meddling (Basically brainwashing...) or by Paris straight up kidnapping her, then the message of the story ends up not being that humans are the playthings of the gods, and that you shouldn't kidnap people and violate sacred hospitality but instead that... Women are fickle and shouldn't choose their husbands? That doesn't sound right. (It's in fact not right it's a bad message).
@Marijke-Perry29 күн бұрын
@@Oznerock I've actually never seen a version where Helen gets to pick; I've always seen it that Odysseus suggests that they draw straws after making an oath to go to war to bring Helen back to Meneleus if she should ever leave or be taken. Vs. There are plenty of interpretations from Greek and Roman authors that Helen went willingly with Paris--Homer actually says once that she followed him (though she regrets it) and once that it was Aphrodite's fault (through Helen's mouth at a time when she is trying to win favor back with her husband; Homer's portrayal of Helen is honestly kind of fascinating to me, as he depicts her as a woman who's not necessarily a hostage in Troy but who regrets her part in all the damage caused while simultaneously knowing there's pretty much nothing she personally can do to end the war). You even get someone as early as Sappho saying wholeheartedly that Helen went willingly. There's always been ambiguity about how Helen felt about the whole matter, and there have been plenty of explorations of what it means to give her agency in this moment both in classical texts and in modern analysis. Helen never chose Meneleus, but we've been asking the question of whether she chose Paris for the past 2000+ years (and whether it was the cruelty of Paris, the shortsightedness of young lovers in an affair, or the hope for liberation from a life she was wasting away in that brought her to Troy).

I still blame Paris; he didn't have to pick Helen - the woman whose marriage is protected by mutual assured destruction war pact - after he just pissed off the goddesses of marriage and military strategy

There was also Cassandra who said to not let the horse in, but everyone just kind of ignored her.

Something more: the horse is the animal symbol of Poseidon, and the snakes came from the ocean, and they were on a beach, and Poseidon is the like second strongest and second most ruthless Olympian, so I would not hesitate to let it in either.

I like the version of the tale Icarus where part of the reason he flew close to the sun was that he fell in love with Apollo and being so enamored in his beauty and the great feeling of the warmth had flown up to him only to die as the wax on his wings melted, Icarus is my favorite Greek Myth and that version makes it so much better and tbh

to be fair, horses in ancient greece were something akin to a symbol for poseidon, so they brought the horse in thinking poseidon had something to do with it, and lets be real if you were in the same position you wouldnt reject a gods offering.
