I left the theater completely stunned, as if I were part of that family. The movie is truly incredible, but Fernanda Torres’ performance is on another level. She didn’t even need to speak to convey what she was feeling; every expression, every gesture, said more than words ever could. Not even the language barrier, with her speaking Portuguese, stopped her emotions from hitting hard. The silence in the theater was almost tangible - everyone was fully immersed, glued to the screen, living that moment.

I so agree with your comment and I share a similar opinion. I watched the movie on Sunday, and for the first 20 minutes, I was observing and paying attention to everything. After Rubens Paiva was arrested, it felt like I had been transported back to the '70s. I was born in 1971, and I remember perfectly how my family would try to talk about politics. They would speak in whispers, and sometimes I would ask what they were talking about, and my mother would signal for me to be quiet. I think they were afraid the house was being watched, which, in fact, wasn’t the case because we lived in a small town. I watched the rest of the movie very carefully, and I thought the performances were perfect. Fernanda deserves all the attention she is getting, and I thought the direction was excellent. The film was perfect. The movie was successful because it was excellent, and those who lived through that time, even if only for a few years, will have a more intense experience when watching it.

Another cool detail: as a teenager, director Walter Salles himself was a friend of one of the daughters in the Paiva household, so he was actually part of that circle for a while and could rely on his own memories to recreate it on screen.

The movie was shot chronologically. So, the second Rubens is taken away, Selton leaves the shooting permanently. That helped to give a "truly missed" vibe in the set. Walter Salles is so sensitive, delicate and careful through it all. This is art as its finest.

I agree with your review. This movie seems like it has a bigger purpose. And this purpose is even higher than the Oscars. So it could have been more dynamic, more this or that, but the choice was to keep it simple and close to the audience. The audience doesn't have time to breathe and relieve its tensions.

I also entered inside the movie so much I saw myself praying when she was in that cell, as if it was happening now. And when they saw the movie Vera made in London, I applauded with the family, as if I was there with them. Something personal., now: I also went to study English in London in 1970, and I also went to cross Abbey Road just like she did. I am almost sure she studied in the same school I studied. But I went in the summer and she went in the winter. But it made me feel even closer to that family.

2:41 Yes! That’s nostalgia! When we have nostalgia we only remember the good moments, we tend to for get bad feelings, and that’s the importance of this movie! To show this dark time of brazilian history to a younger generation of brazilians that did not live, or only live their childhood in this particular time, because some people today including politicians are thinking that Brazil in the 60’s 70’s and 80’s were great, perfect and want to bring back again this moment of our time. This movie is a grim reminder of our past, so it can not happen again.

I have a few interesting things to say about this movie… are you ready? Lol! Turns out they shot the movie chronologically, so when the husband was not there anymore and the cast had created such a tight bond, they could really feel his absence.. Also important to mention that Brazil, as the US, has been going through a scary political moment that opened up space to a conversation of another possible military dictatorship, so its extremely important, today, to remind the population of how tough those years were and how priceless is our freedom. Also, Walter Salles directed Fernanda Montenegro in Central Station 25 years ago (amazing film btw, if you haven’t seen it!) when she got the first ever Oscar nomination for a Brazilian actress, giving an insane Oscar worthy performance, but then lost it to Gwyneth Patrow for Shakespeare in Love 😵💫 who then went on stage and the first person she thanked was harvey weinst**n) 😅😅😅😖 Fernanda Torres had also worked with Walter many many years ago in a movie called Foreign Land, and has since wished to have another opportunity to work with him, but since she has mainly been a comedy actress, and he more of a serious director and documentarist, she didn’t really think it would be possible until she got an invitation. So now, years later they get to work together again, and create something so touching and beautiful that she gets the second ever Oscar nomination for a Brazilian actress, after her mother, 25 years later. And also very worthy of the award. And it was an absolute dream of Selton Mello to work with either of them, so this film is rich of full circle moments as is on screen as off it. Specially ending with Fernanda Mother playing her own daughter in the later phase of life, together with the Oscar nomination.. There’s also the connection developed between cast and crew and the real family members, and the connection of Fernanda and Eunice, the character she plays. So much symbolism, so much depth… I also saw in an interview with Selton where he shares that before he was meant to play his characters last scene with his family before being taken, he says “I, Selton, feel sad because I know what is about to happen to him and his family, but Marcelo doesn’t know, so I had to really empty myself from that heaviness so that it could feel as genuine as possible, so what I would do is I would play with the actors who were my kids in the film, we would talk about games and sports and easy, light stuff just so I could get in that state of oblivion”. Him and Fernanda also mention in a few interviews that the the amazing bond and the trust in the team, the cast and the director and his crew, that they were so lucky with everyone involved, and everyone had so much trust in everyones work, that they really felt connected, that there were moments in the film where it didn’t feel like they were acting, which is one of the qualities of it, that it makes us forget we are watching actors, it almost blends with reality, so its incredible to hear them saying that it was their experience while shooting. Also the feel of the house which Walter did frequent when he was younger, reason why he could bring it to life so brilliantly. Me and my sister related in the sense that our family also kind of felt like that, the bond, the love. And how resilient was that mother who never let it all take her smile, after going through such a traumatic experience, went back to law school and became a defensor of civil rights protecting so many minorities from military abuse amongst so many other great things.. Brazil had its first female president about a decade ago, Dilma, who was a survivor of the dictatorship, who was actually also abducted and tortured but lived to tell the story. I started what was supposed to be a small comment but I guess I had a lot more to say and feel way more passionate about this than I thought. I got the chance to watch it in Brazil in November in the theaters with my big Sister who since the 90s has been a huge fan of Marcelo Rubens Paiva (the guy who is the youngest child in the film, but who wrote the book about his mother, of which the movie is based on). I also happened to go to primary and middle school with one of Eunices grandsons, who is now in politics trying to do some good in this crazy world we live in… Like I said, lots of layers and full circle moments, and many different ways to say that we are still here and we are not going anywhere 🫶🏽🇧🇷

Dude, I'm Brazilian and I thought it was great how you captured the essence of this film, even though you're not Brazilian, you captured a lot of things from this film that we Brazilians also captured, I'm very happy that I'm still here and managed to connect with so many people from different countries. the film I'm still here represents a lot for us Brazilians, the memory of the years of military dictatorship in Brazil, the importance of cinema as a memory and of always remembering so as not to repeat, especially in the context that our country, the USA and the world live in. of authoritarianism and also in what Brazil experienced on January 8, 2023, an attempt at another coup d'état and breakdown of democracy, just as the USA had experienced two years earlier on January 6 the violent invasion of the capitol, I'm still here through of memory The story of the heroine Eunice Paiva teaches us that we need to remember so as not to repeat ourselves and have the resistance and resilience that Eunice Paiva had to overcome the advances of authoritarianism in the world. Cinema is beautiful, because cinema is memory and cinema inspires us. I'm really rooting for I'm still here to win the 3 Oscars it's competing for. Congratulations on the review, it was very good.

Fernanda Torres doesn't act "screaming" here. The uniqueness in her performance is, indeed, how her character needs to show her feelings as if they weren't there. Eunice CAN'T break, can't cry in front of her family, she's the only part holding all the family together. So she didn't BREAK during the whole film. And that's INCREDIBLY HARD! To perform a character like Eunice, i mean.... WITHOUT crying like the world will end, still showing how she's destroyed by that??? Jesus. It's like a cinema critic i know says, Isabela Boscov, It's not a performance that screams "OH MY GOD LOOK HOW I CAN CRY, LOOK HOW PITTY I AM, PLEASE GIVE ME AN OSCAR!". No. Fernanda Torres acts contained. And that, my friends, THAT'S PURE ABSOLUTE CINEMA HERE!

SOME INFORMATION 💎 Fernanda Torres's mother, Fernanda Montenegro was the first latin actress nominated to the Oscar of Best Actress (Katy Jurado and Norma Aleandro had already been nominated as Supporting Actress) and, to date, she was the only Portuguese-spoken actor nominated to the award, but her daughter just to repeat this. That was in 1999, with the movie Central Station, also directed by Walter Salles and nominated to Best Foreign Language Film. 💎 Fernanda Torres, Selton Mello and Fernanda Montenegro played in Four Days in Septemper, brazilian movie nominated to the Oscar of Best Foreign Language Film in 1998, also about brazilian dictatorship period. 💎 I'm Still Here is the first Portuguese-spoken movie to be nominated to the Oscar of Best Picture and the fifth that was nominated to Best Foreign Language. 💎 Fernanda Torres, aged 20, won the award for Best Actress at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival by the movie Love Me Forever or Never (tied with Barbara Sukowa, by Rosa Luxemburg). She was the first brazilian actress (of two) to win an award in Cannes. The second one was Sandra Corveloni that, coincidentally, was directed by Walter Salles. 💎 Fernanda Torres was the fourth brazilian actor nominated to Golden Globe, but the second with a Portuguese-spoken performance. The first one was her mother. The other nominees were Sônia Braga (Kiss of the Spider Woman, Moon Over Parador and The Burning Season) and Wagner Moura (Narcos). 💎 Fernando Torres, father of Fernanda Torres (yes, they got the same name), played in Kiss of Spider Woman (4 nominations to the Oscar 1986, William Hurt won Best Actor) 💎 I'm Still Here is the fourth movie of Walter Salles to be nominated to the Golden Globe of Best Foreign Language Film (Central Station won, and the other nominees were Behind the Sun and Motorcycle Diaries) and the second nominated to the Oscar of the same category (Central Station was the first) 💎 Fernanda Torres gained a pop star quality in Brazil because her performances in the sitcoms Normal People and Slaps and Kisses.

Only those who haven't seen "I'm Still Here" are surprised. Fernanda Torres winning the Globe and the fire creating a window of time gave voters the opportunity to get to know the film and be enchanted by its power and message. As the actress herself said, "I know the art of the world, but the world doesn't know what we produce. I feel sorry for those who don't know our art." The fact that it needs to be legitimized by an award and a tragedy like the one in Los Angeles happens for voters to give it a chance and discover that someone other than the US and Europe has good stories to tell? Really, it's worth feeling sorry for those who end up losing these works of art, or rather, I'm happy that foreigners are getting a glimpse of what they're missing.

the music in the movie and the tiitle are very symbolic. Marcelo Paiva, Rubens Paiva's son and author of the original book I'm Still Here, said that the title is due to something his mother Eunice said in the midst of Alzheimer's. one day, in a brief moment of lucidity, she turned to him and said, "you see, i am still here. I'm still here." it is also a phrase from the song that Rubens Paiva's torturers played during the torture session. the brazilian military was taught by CIA agents how to torture prisoners (the Condor Plan) and one of the tactics was to play the victim's favorite song while hurting them. Rubens Paiva's favorite song's chorus goes "Jesus Cristo, eu estou aqui". Jesus Christ, i am here". the song that plays in the end of the movie is from the time it all happened, and it goes: "i've arrived from very far, and the trip was so long. and there were many obstacles on the road, but at last, >here i am

Just a fun kinda unrelated fact: The director, Walter Salles, is the 3rd richest director in the world, only behind George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. Btw, he is *extremely* talented and intelligent, he could have a nomination for Best Directing
