Fernanda Torres took home the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture-Drama for her role as Eunice Paiva in the Brazilian film "I'm Still Here." She joins us, alongside director Walter Salles, to discuss the film, which tells the story of a woman determined to find out the truth about the disappearance of her husband in the midst of Brazil's military dictatorship.

A touching movie, it really moved me to remember my childhood in Brazil in the 70s. And all the memories of the dictatorship came flooding back. I felt textures, sounds and smells. Really touching! ❤️✊🏻

I just want to add a little more context (for Non-Brazilians) here: All of of the songs that the family listens at the house are musics from musicians that got censured during the dictarshiop and the songs that we listen on the radios are popular songs, but from artists that were complict with the regime. When the military come to take Rubens away for good, you can actually see them looking at their vinyl collection and books... they were actually looking for content that could be considered subversive, communist or whatever. The movie shows that Eunice Paiva graduated in Law School when she was 48 years old. In her work as a lawyer, she dedicated herself to the indigenous peoples issues and acted against the violence and undue expropriation of land suffered by the indigenous population. That's the kind of fight that nobody wanted to take back in the day (maybe not even today). It is partially because of her work decades ago that today we have a wider area of well preserved amazon forest for instance. The helicopter that flies by them at the beach were used to drop bodies at the sea. Sometimes they dropped not only dead bodies, but living people in chains. The country only found about that about that decades later (also due to Eunice's work in a way). You kind of have to be Brazilian to understand that. The sound of the chopper gave me a little despair feeling in the theater whereas the characters in the movie expressed no feeling (cuz they had no idea). Congressman Rubens Paiva had a statue inaugurated in our capital a few years ago. Our former president Bolsonaro (Trump wannabe) actually spat at the statue and then said that Rubens deserved to die. Oh yeah... and he did all that IN FRONT OF the family on the very inauguration day. He's that disgusting, even though it seems like I'm far from you telling enough.

Fernanda Torres' performance is brilliantly restrained and honors the legacy of the great woman and activist that was EUNICE PAIVA. Her fight deserves ALL recognition, serves as a warning about the dangers of an authoritarian State and was able to unite Brazil to fill the cinemas.

SOME INFORMATION 💎 I'm Still Here is the first Portuguese-spoken movie to be nominated to the Oscar of Best Picture and the sixth that was nominated to Best Foreign Language Film (the fifth representing Brazil). 💎 Fernanda Torres's mother, Fernanda Montenegro was the first latin actress nominated to the Oscar of Best Actress (Katy Jurado, Rita Moreno and Norma Aleandro had already been nominated as Supporting Actress) and, to date, she was the only Portuguese-spoken actor nominated to the award, but her daughter just repeated this. That was in 1999, with the movie Central Station, also directed by Walter Salles and nominated to Best Foreign Language Film. 💎 Fernanda Torres, Selton Mello and Fernanda Montenegro played in Four Days in Septemper, brazilian movie nominated to the Oscar of Best Foreign Language Film in 1998, also about brazilian dictatorship period. 💎 Fernanda Torres, aged 20, won the award for Best Actress at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival by the movie Love Me Forever or Never (tied with Barbara Sukowa, by Rosa Luxemburg). She was the first brazilian actress (of two) to win an award in Cannes. The second one was Sandra Corveloni that, coincidentally, was directed by Walter Salles. 💎 Fernanda Torres was the fourth brazilian actor nominated to Golden Globe, but the second with a Portuguese-spoken performance. The film shows the exact mood of those outrageous times that lasted 21 years. As a kid I was frigthened to go out withou documents becaue we " might desapear". My father was a sociologist and teacher so our house was watched and surveyed by incognito men just like those at Eunice's. News, art, music, teachers, priests were censored. It is not surprising that people in other countries never got to know about that tragedy. We had acquaintances that had been tortured or had to leave the country. The Paivas buried their pet but coukd never bury their father. To this very day the same extreme right wing people menace brazilian democracy.
