I absolutely second what Hannah has said. Because of various job-related things, I didn't move out of my parents' place until I was 30. I struggled with depression and anxiety because I wasn't moving in the "right" direction. It took a lot of time and effort, but what I found worked best is to start being more gentle with myself. Set goals, strive for them, but also ease up on yourself and start believing that you're worth it. Our parents and even some of our friends might still believe that older societal norms exist, but trust me - there's many of us out here living lives that are outside of the "get married and have kids by the time you're 35" contingent. And the great thing is - both lives are completely and totally fine. Ease up on yourself and listen to your heart.

Hi Valerie :) while I usually agree with the genius that is John Green, got some stuff to alter/extend. First things first, rather work on your Smart goals, or at least your Smat goals ;) he actually mentioned it in all his examples: the time frame is super important. And yeah the R as in realistic is basically the same as attainable but whatever 😉 other than that, I would try to focus on the moving out part, trust me, it helps so much, even if you can only afford to do so by appartement sharing or something. Also, think about why you find working in retail to be problematic. Do you really not like it? Because if it‘s just because of what people might think, screw them. I wish you all the best 👍🏼

I must say, John, that as a fan of Hankgames who has watched you play FIFA since 2012, this is one of the most entertaining seasons I’ve seen so far! Your commentary is equal parts poignant and entertaining and the gameplay is balanced and competitive for the first time in a few seasons. Loving every video, even if they’re not the most popular.

I was Valerie 10 years ago. I started working retail to "get me through college" but when the store was closing after I had worked there for 9 years and I still had not gotten through college. So I went back to school. Continued to work retail part time and got my Bachelor's of Social Work. Now I have my dream job.....and I still work part-time in retail because my dream job is at a small non-profit organization without medical insurance. But life is good.

I'm 33 and still living with my parents because I've never been able to afford to live somewhere else. Over the past 10 years I've struggled a lot with job and career-related stuff, and I think one of the most important things I've accomplished is to work through the psychological hangups I have that discourage me. A few years ago I thought to myself "oh wow, I just thought seriously about my future without having a mental breakdown," and that was a huge milestone for me. I celebrated it. I started writing lists of things to do every week. Not huge things, just things that would contribute towards moving my life forward. I started keeping an eye on my anxieties so I wouldn't fall into ways of thinking that would destroy my confidence. I made a point to talk to people who would encourage me in the ways that were most helpful. I think John's advice is on point. It really helps me to internalize the idea that my success is not the same as what other people might see as success, and that the things I do to make money don't have to be the things that define me. I make most of my money as a customer service rep, but when I'm networking I define myself as an illustrator. I don't even know what I want my life to be like or what my dream job is, I just have some ideas of stuff I think I'm good at and have a high tolerance for.

I work as a supervisor at a call center, and my job can be essentially summarised as helping others set SMART goals to improve. I was equal parts excited and low-key embarrassed at instantly reciting what each letter stands for the second you mentioned SMART goals :P

Interesting (and I'm its not totally comparable of a situation) but I'm doing fine at college but I don't remember the last time I had a coherent and connected conversation with any member of my family What you said about the importance of making the lives of the people around you happy is so true. Perhaps that is the most important part of life
@EdwardCree6 жыл бұрын
We always value that which we lack. If you have great relationships with the people around you, and a crummy dead-end job, of course you're going to start thinking that career advancement is the key to happiness. Conversely, if you have a really fulfilling and lucrative career, but only a handful of arms-length friendships and no love life to speak of... guess what, you're gonna overvalue relationships and take your work for granted. Both kinds of person exist, and while John's advice about not being too obsessed about your career is valuable for one kind, it's harder to give general advice that's useful to both. It's not as though there aren't _also_ social pressures labelling the _other_ kind as a failure! So the advice I would give to Valerie, and everyone else for that matter, is to try to spend more time taking stock of your successes, and less time dwelling on your problems. Of course, that is far, _far_ easier said than done; having been through depressive episodes I know how intrusive and insistent those negative thoughts can be, and how hollow or irrelevant one's victories and advantages can seem in contrast. (In theory, there should also be people for whom _that_ advice is wrong - per Slate Star Codex's "Should You Reverse Any Advice You Hear?" - but I'm not sure there are actually people whose problem is that they're too happy…)

every time i watch these videos i feel the need to reach through the screen and shake john's shoulders until his eyes rattle around in his head. dude, you need to pass the ball around, not just straight ahead down the near wing every time. also, there's much to be said for personal contentment and happiness. if valerie feels the need for more "achievement, yes, small goals will help her to pick up some momentum in that direction.
