Best of luck to you Matt. I tried xmonad off camera about a year ago... It was cool, but I wasn't "all in" on the window manager. So I went back to spectrwm/dwm after a short time. I have faith in you buddy, and I'm sure there will be some xmonad ricing videos in the future if you stick with it.

I started my WM experience with i3. Went to DWM about 9 months after and that was nearly 3 years ago. Never left DWM. Does exactly what I want and need it to do. I admire the folks that hang with XMonad and Qtile.

Excellent video Matt and great to see you recovering from illness. 👍

Thanks for the content Matt. here we go! I have been wanting to do it too. I think I will do it later. But first using BSPWM. Then moving on to Xmonad and try to recreate the workflow. I kinda like the approach of that. For me it's easier that way. I will also finally try out sxhkd on Void when I get that installed on bare metal. Probably happening tonight. I figured I wouldn't ever replace my Gentoo install, but it's going down. I will have to get Gentoo up and running in a vm or linode instance to keep it fresh in my brain.

If you and DT have time, it might be worth it to link up with DT if you can and schedule some time to talk with him about how he learned Xmonad and Haskell. He’s been transparent in the past about how he’s not a developer, but he does know a fair amount of Haskell. He might have some insight on how to decide which of the myriad solutions are right for your particular case. Plus it would be cool to see a collab if y’all record it. Totally not hinting at anything. 😅

Uhg. Docs are critical, no matter who is using it. Bad documentation is the death of open source.

To me Xmonad has been surpased by its clones like Qtile

Matt, DT did a recent video where he said the xmobar made a change, which caused his xmobar to stop working as it was, where he had to use polybar instead of xmobar. just use polybar instead.

From what Ive heard about it's users and personal experience. It's somewhat better to treat xmonad as a library, and really that's what it actually is. I set up a cabal project that just compiles an xmonad from the library. Making it no different than any other haskell project.

I love window manager hopping, distro hopping, etc. But at some point I figured I was just wasting my time. I took things seriously and chose to use only one distro(void linux) and one wm(awesome), so I can get that out of the way and actually do something with my life :).

Bad documentation is no bueno. i3 would never treat you like that. If you can do it in i3, it's 99% going to be on the i3 user guide.
@TheLinuxCast Жыл бұрын
Comparing any WM's docs to i3 is unfair because those are so good
@donaldwilliams6821 Жыл бұрын
Interesting WM. I think I'll say with hpyrland for now. Found a great setup script for it @soldoestech Setting up waybar and mapping keys is a lot easier than this seems to be. It's become my daily driver on a slower backup system. I am about 99% of the way there to redoing my main ubuntu / ElementaryOS system to ARCH / Hyprland. I've been using debian/ubuntu for decades. So getting me to move to ARCH is no small feat. haha I am so much more productive on hyprland. Thanks for showing me why *I* don't want to try Xmonad . No judgement on those that do. Linux is all about freedom of choice. Cheers

I hate the language but xmonand is a great window manager
@anon_y_mousse Жыл бұрын
I've said it before, and no one seems to understand why, but I don't think configuration files should be written in a programming language. I understand the arguments for it, but really it's just a sign that the program in question is unfinished. Also, I kind of hate every programming language that isn't C.
@willful759 Жыл бұрын
dw about it, you don't have a filter in your brain, haskell is a _very_ different programming language, it takes a while to get used to it, it is a big rabbit hole
