This movie is a Great allegory for having children. You have them but they have their own lives. They can abuse you and there is sometimes little you can do about it. You can live through them, but not share their direct experiences. -Much like having children: The Substance gives false advertising about its actual effects. Demi's character does not really experience any of her "Newer" self's life. The question remains: Why do it?
