I highly recommend the expansions, both are great story wise. And I mostly only play coop, there are a lot of interesting characters, although mission variety is limited and gets a bit repetitive once you've done each map a dozen times. That's why I only play from time to time.

I still play BW. Been playing since '98 and competitively off and on since '05. I play on the Korean server every once in a while and I'm able to get a win in here and there. What makes me happy though is playing well enough to make them get frustrated. I don't give up easily and sometimes turn around what looks like an easy early loss into a 20 minute fight to the death, and boy, do they hate that.

I would recommend harstem for protoss guides, he is a professional Dutch player, ranked top 50 on aligulac and he makes build guides for well protoss, he has series for doing stupid stuff too, so he might be a good channel to learn from, I can say that this is probably my favorite game ever made and I was extremely excited when you mentioned starcraft in the halo wars videos so like I am just crying from how excited I am about this video
