I especially liked the parody of "A Beautiful Mind" at the end, because something never sat right with me about that movie, and I think Kaufman exposes as you say how Hollywood romanticizes certain things. Mental illness does not end with an award ceremony where everyone praises you for what a special brain you have. You end up completely alone and no one gives a fuck about you. I've never seen a movie just tell it like it is in regards to that reality. The film was a punch in the gut but also deeply inspiring.

I'm not too intellectual or educated, so, as I was watching it, I knew this film was over my head in a lot of ways. I didn't understand it in a way I could even discuss, but I really enjoyed it. It was dreamy, a bit haunting but not overly dark, more comforting but at the same time exciting. I liked the school sequences toward the end but I think I need to try to understand what you're saying about that stuff and watch it again. I kinda suspected there was some kind of statement being made but it was all pretty far beyond me. Still, those final sequences were enjoyable. I liked it a lot though. I tend to really like atmospheric films that make me feel lost in a bunch of familiar but disjointed elements. I like having the feeling that I could rewatch the film many times and still wonder the whole time about many things.

I love and appreciate so much in your comment, but mostly your sincerity and honesty. I feel that far too many people tend to have this need to prove their "intelligence" or superior understanding of art, etc. I may be guilty of this once in awhile myself but I try to be balanced and aware of it because it annoys the shit out of me also. Lol. This movie is very unique but also shares some similarities with David Lynch's work and is an influential love of Charlie Kaufman's as well. If you haven't yet become a fan of David Lynch I'd highly recommend his films.

I’m honestly surprised you said it’s not too dark, because for me this is easily Kaufman’s bleakest film (and that’s saying something). Seriously, I think this is probably one of the most depressing films I’ve seen in my life.

!!!SPOILER ALERT!!! Easter Egg: Five minutes into the film : When the old man protagonist is having breakfast, he is watching the Peabody and Sherman show. Mr Peabody: ' let's take a peak back into history' - a subtle hint of travelling back in time, not with a Wayback machine but through past regrets and the question of Whatif I got that girl's number? It is these subtle touches that shows how much thought has been put into this film. Ernest Becker's 'The Denial of Death' is a good complimentary book to this movie. Both these things are darker than the deepest ocean. 'I am thinking of ending things' is marvelous. 9 out of 10

In Oklahoma!, Jud is the antagonist only because he's unintelligent, lonely, and feared. You could argue he's misunderstood. He's hopelessly in love with Laurey, who agrees to go to the dance with him under false pretenses. The hero, Curly, goes to Jud's shack and tries to talk him into killing himself. In response, he sings "Lonely Room", defiantly deciding to make Laurey fall in love with him and wed her. At the end of the first act, Laurey hallucinates, via the dream ballet, about her possible future with Curly, then pictures her date, Jud, killing him, which makes her realize that Curly is the man for her. The dream ballet is her way of seeing the paths laid before her; how her life can play out. In I'm Thinking of Ending Things, the choice was already made. The dream ballet is a fantasy of the path Jake could have taken, but he missed his chance. He was left obsessing over the path he didn't take, whether or not it would have led to happiness. Yeah this movie was killer. Also Jessie Buckley's performance was jaw dropping. She played an amalgamation of a man's psyche, either one or several relationships, or an imagined personality attached to a nonexistent person, a surrogate for the essays and poems he read, the voice of his suicidal fantasy, and a personification of his more feminine side, and she slides through them so effortlessly. The Woman Under the Influence speech was show stopping.

I don't know why Buckley doesnt get more attention for this role. I get that Colette is magnificent in just about everything she does (especially these type of roles) but I honestly have not been this impressed with an actress in a LONG time. The last 4 things I've watched Buckley in, she's had 4 different accents, and she's been brilliant in all of them. It's incredible how complex this role was, and yet you're never confused as to where she's in in her headspace, or what her character is trying to portray. It's all so obvious on her face and her mannerisms.

Its one of my favorite movies of the year, and its a little sad to see some people shitting on it for being "pretentious". Its definitely not for everyone, but the story really clicked with me in the way it was told.
@Austin-xu9ty

Jones Heywire I believe pretentiousness is subjective, depending on the circumstances of a persons life, they will see a movie this complex and deeply imbedded in metaphor in a completely different way. I am horrified of the thought of death and getting older, so it hit me pretty hard, (also being a huge fan of Charlie Kaufman I was expecting it to be confusing and hard to grasp on the first watch.) but to answer your question, my personal interpretation is that, it is not pretentious, because as artsy and pretentious as it may come off to someone who doesn’t like Charlie Kaufman films, or just pretentious bcuz on the first watch it makes no sense. It isn’t simply because it’s a story about a man’s fantasy- it’s just presented in a confusing way cuz Kaufman likes doing that and is good at it. I don’t think confusing and artsy combined = pretentious. Just my opinion tho! :)

So glad that other people really understand and appreciate this film. The criticisms I have seen all boil down to it not being a neatly packaged point A to point B story. This film clearly wasn't made with that kind of moviegoer in mind. Also glad to hear that others feel the emotional affect that, for me, Kaufman can hit me with like a gut punch.

I saw this movie and am very hurt, it was a mistake. I suffer from asbergers a form of autism and I can do a lot of things with 3d graphics, my condition has crippled my life and it's pretty friendless and hopeless. They only offer janitor and toilet cleaning work for me but I can do complicated visual effects on my PC. This film haunts haunts me so terribly, like seeing a inevitable preview of my life decades in the future. Fortunately I don't delusionate I'm multiple personalities to myself(s) in an imaginary car...yet.
@pointysidedown
@pointysidedown 3 жыл бұрын
I think the problem was not that he was a janitor. The problem was that he regretted giving up on his dreams to achieve what he wanted in life. He stopped setting goals and didn't know how to adjust his dreams to become practical and realistic for his situation. He just let the maggots eat him.

Your review is killer too, Maggie... insomuch that it almost moved me to tears as well. As a diehard cineaste, sometimes I feel as though the days when artists (like Fellini, Kubrick, Lynch, etc.) pushed themselves to the brink are part of a bygone era. But Kaufman’s artful handling of this dense, ambitious material hit the sweet spot. And so did your review.

Granted, his style is very different from Fellini, Kubrick, Lynch, etc... But that’s kinda my point... he’s a fearless original nonetheless. And with every film he manages to push harder and further than before, still taking risks - even if he risks losing his audience (which is always in the cards for any true artist). Time will be the ultimate arbiter as to which of his films may be considered “masterpieces.” Case in point, ‘Being John Malkovich’ is still aging like fine wine. Released during a year (1990) amidst a great many outstanding films, ‘Malkovich’ still stands out as perhaps the most boldly and brilliantly original of them all. It may not be the most entertaining, or the most stylish, or whatever - but it is definitely, staggeringly unique. And that is what makes him like the others.

I love Kaufman and this movie was really something special, not that you would expect anything less from him. I wouldn't say it's my favorite because I connected on a more personal level with Anomalisa, but I was really moved by this too towards the end, especially in that beautiful dreamy dance sequence through the school corridors. I agree with you that you can feel a kinship with David Lynch, and Kaufman has actually said that Lynch is one of his favorite filmmakers. Anyway, I loved your analysis of the movie, I think you have one of the best youtube channels on cinema. I always look forward to hear your thoughts on new movies that are coming out.

For me this was Kaufman's first big misfire. I suppose you can dig as deep into it as you'd like to go. I'm not sure personally it's as deep as this review discusses. It had it's good points & I was mostly on board for quite some time but I found the further it went on the less convinced I became. This film covers again all those themes Kaufman has spent his life obsessed with. It just lacked those moments of cinematic genius his previous films all contained with abundance. I didn't find this film especially from a storytelling point of view all that clever. Once you've basically worked out this isn't really her story & that he is in fact the school caretaker. Which I think I did the second time he was on screen about 10 minutes into the film. You quickly realise this is a series of projections of himself & how he'd maybe have liked to be seen in the world because their stories don't stack up. It's a poor slight of hand trick by Kaufman who tries to throw you off the scent by making you think it's all about her. Maybe most people didn't see it straight away but you cannot just place this old man in the film in the middle of a long conversation & it not be something important to the story.

I'm very impressed with how well you are able to articulate your thoughts, especially on your more abstract film reviews. I really appreciate this film, as well as your thoughts on it. Conceptually, this movie reminds me of Last Year At Marienbad. I think Marienbad is more rorschach-like though, and lends itself to more broad and esoteric concepts. Marienbad is definitely bland compared to films with more focus on character depth, but I think it's that same bland-vagueness that potentially lends itself to a little more broad and personalized abstract interpretation. Synecdoche, New York has been on my list for a while, I don't know what I'm waiting for!

i’m a huge fan of kaufman, and i was so excited to get to return to his mind in 2020, but ultimately i found this film to be lacking that certain thing that kaufman is so good at that allows me to feel safe to explore the themes and reflect on the abstract nature of his bizarre story telling, but also remaining entertained and engaged. i think it’s very easy to through abstraction against a wall and see what sticks, but what always made kaufman such a talented storyteller is that he has these abstract ideas but he builds a world around his themes where it all feels logical and rational. to me that takes more work then just writing whatever and simply saying “it’s entirely open to interpretation” films like being john malkovich, adaptation, eternal sunshine, anomalisa, these are creative genius, but itoet...meh, i found it ultimately disappointing, and for a kaufman film that means very disappointing.

@@pointysidedown Don't be so hard on yourself! Careers or accomplishing aspirations can't give you real meaning, purpose, or fulfillment anyway (at least not in the long run, and especially not if you're a deep person, which you probably are). Believe me, I had my fair share of success in my life and it had not made me happy. Success can buy you a house or take away your worries about paying bills or they can give you meaningless superficial admiration. But real happiness or meaning must be found elsewhere in my opinion. Both films, by the way, tell the story of someone who is very lost and lonely, and one of them is very successful (an award-winning theater director) and the other is not. Charlie Kaufman's films have this nihilistic undertone that can make you feel like there's no meaning to life. I like his films and I see a certain depth in them, but that doesn't mean the films show you the whole picture of the human condition. They only describe the feeling of being lost and lonely. I believe one can find real fulfillment and meaning in life without being actually accomplished and at the same time, many highly accomplished people live miserable lives....

Inexplicable stuff happening just for the sake of being ironic and unexpected. Because at first when the movie was coming to its conclusion, I thought to myself that it wasn’t meant to be taken too seriously, and that it was a satire about people who read too much into things. It's interesting to me that you say the novel used the ending as a gimmick in contrast to the film, while i think kaufman added his own perspective to it, i am not quite sure where this big gap in appreciation is coming from tbh. Other than translating it to the screen and playing with more of an open hand from the get to (though this might be easily missed by people unaware of the source material as well), it seems like the film is fairly close to the novel in its themes and ideas, though definitely with a kaufmanesque touch on top.

Yeah I'd say its basically the same in theme and ideas, it just doesnt quite have the dramatic "pay-off" that I could see being thought of as a gimmick. I like the movie better for that reason because it's showing that it's not trying to use those genre themes to get it's point across. It's more ambiguous and allows your mind to wander a little bit more. I think the open-endedness of the film works with it, not against it.

I can’t taste or smell at the moment thanks to covid. As for the movie really enjoyed it , my partner not so much ( a bit too strange for her ) I found it strange but delightfully so , creepy in a way that horror movies never really are but there is something very human about it also , one of my favorites from last year

Alright this movie was extremely good but for the first time in my life I've found a movie too depressing for me! And I'm not that kinf of guy that rejects films because they are too weird, too complicated or deals with tough subjects, I am all the opposite. But this movie was too much for me : the only thing I could get out of it was negative. I mean I know Kaufman only through is work but it's enough to make it clear I have the same way of thinking, I "could have made" this movie on paper. But I would never have, even in the worst moments of my life, not something like this only filled with regrets and depression. Anyway, another great piece of work starring Jesse Plemons! Friday Night Lights, BB, Fargo, The Master, Bridge of spies, Hostiles, Pentagon Papers, Game Night, Vice, The Irishman... These are all the films and series starring him that I have watched and the average quality of it is quite impressive. An amzing career so far! And yeah I fell in love with Jessie Buckley again! I didn't recognize her from Chernobyl so I fell in love back then and it happened again^^ Remind me of 2 ex gfs of mine, by far the best ones. I hope there will be more and more people like her within the next generations. Can't wait to see her in Fargo!

So "happy" with the film. It isn't "Synecdoque, New York" levels of but it's as close to that as it could get.

Did you read the book? I found the book more appealing. I liked the abrupt darkness and despair, not the interpretive dance in the film.

I’m thinking of ending things is the newest Netflix film directed by Charlie Kaufman. This was a film I was very excited for, it had so many things going for it. All the talent in front and behind the camera and the story just looked fascinating. Did it deliver though, in short answer kinda but there’s more to be said. First of all let me just say how much I respect and admire Charlie Kaufman as a Screenwriter and even director. His work is always super unique, different and they seem to focus on characters that are well realized. I’m thinking of ending things though, feels like a 2020 Charlie Kaufman film monitored by Netflix where he is under restrictions on creativity and can’t fully express this story the way he would have liked. I know that this film is based on a book so that may explain why this story and the outcome of it all is so unfulfilling but it had so much potential to be something better. Let me just give credit where credit is due though, because there’s a lot of positives to I’m thinking of ending things and there’s no denying that. It’s a well done film overall, the way it was shot, the musical theme the film has throughout its runtime is pleasant and joyous, the acting from everyone is excellent but the standout for me was Toni Collette. She was always an actress of such range, where she is able to go with the characters she plays, her commitment and her performance here just gave me more respect for her. I’m thinking of ending things is a character driven film that prioritizes conversations that characters have with each other. It has a lot of dialogue, and there aren’t many locations that are explored. Most of the settings are in locations that are seen often and we’re supposed to get comfortable spending time in them. Since the film has so much dialogue it’s important for the screenplay to be strong. The screenplay is intriguing at times and I liked the tone of it all but I felt like what the film was trying to convey it didn’t do a good job of conveying. The first two acts of the film are great, I liked the setup, where the story was potentially going and how the film wasn’t afraid of not explaining itself. Let’s talk about that, how the film doesn’t explain itself. From the get go a lot of how this story unfolds is odd, weird, creepy and you have a lot of questions. That’s how we the audience relate to the protagonist because we're experiencing the same things and have the same questions as she does. So there is some sense and search to find out what is going on but I felt like all that went to waste in the clumsy third act. The third act didn’t wrap things up at all, but instead got more confusing, weird and I checked out. I’m thinking of ending things is a film with a lot of depth, hidden meanings and there’s so much more under the surface. I give it praise for not trying to go the straightforward route but with a third act that doesn’t care about giving the answers and explaining itself the outcome of it all made me ask what was the purpose of all that just happened.
