In the late 70s, Colerain still had a number of businesses. My mother and her family grew up in Perrytown, a crossroads nearby. My mom and her mother both went to school in Colerain. My mom told me about the time the school let out so all tbe students coild see "The Wizard of Oz" when it showed at the town's movie theater.

What a great story. I imagine the kids remembered their special day out at the theater for a long time. Thanks for sharing 👍

Grew up here in colerain, It was odd seeing it come up on KZbin! When i was a little boy I remember the little general store and a type of thrift store. I loved to go into that store and ramble through all the things. A big part of colerain was the fishery down on the river. It was destroyed by a hurricane. Times were tougher back then but I think they were so much better. Thank you for visiting next time come on sunday and join us at Colerain Baptist Church.

I'm from the Central Piedmont of NC. Most small NC towns have the same charm and solitude shown here on this quiet winter morning.

Thank you for the tour. Wouldn't it be amazing if more people were thoughtful enough to leave a like even if they didn't know what to say in a comment.

It would, but I’m grateful for the views. And it’s nice to be traveling along with everyone 😀 Thanks for being one of them, Derklavierspieler7491

The architecture and craftsmanship on these old main streets is just amazing. Imagine the cost to build a storefront like that now. If you could even find a company that had people skillful enough to do the work. Then trying to source the materials. In certain larger towns, in the right location, these types of buildings would be redeveloped and worth a good bit. If I was Elon Musk rich, I would redevelop these towns, building green residential areas nearby to support the town centers, promote data centers and even local farming. It would almost have to be something like that to get these areas to be vibrant again. A town of 200 people is going to have a hard town supporting local business.

You are correct. Timothy has taken us through several towns like this that have seen better days. Colerain has some really magnificent homes, seems safe and orderly, yet has what appears to have been a nice little "business district", that has all but dried up. I'm not holding my breath that things will change much in the future, and I suspect that the folks in the town don't really have a problem with that.

There was a dollar store showing that a general store could survive there. But big chains are able to purchase their products cheaper by buying in bulk if I’m not mistaken. If this is true, I think it has created an unfair business practice that should be addressed because it makes it impossible for smaller businesses to compete with the larger. Thanks for posting and sharing your thoughts 👍

The people I talked to wanted to have some of their stores return, but others may not making it difficult for sure 👍
