Back in 71 I use to live up on the hillside right looking straight over to the rock. It was all old small tourists shops shops along the street back then. The town had changed since then/tore down and built new shops and is unrecognizable now. I will try and dig out some of those old photos and share them with you.

Loved the split screen yesterday Timothy, and while I know you were sorry about the Chimney Rock today, the devastation you were able to show us, shows the reason why.

You are correct. The town lost most of their shops and they do not need me getting in their way. They still have a lot of work to do. Thanks for commenting and watching 👍

My mom worked at that hotel, The Geneva. She was told to NOT come into work the day of the storm and to stay home and stay safe. I'm so thankful she didn't go to work that day! She could have been on the roads trying to get home and got swept away. Everyone who was there got out and went across the road and was safe ❤pl The owners want to reopen eventually, but the entire bottom floor is filled with mud and their Tiki Bar washed away completely. They said it'd be a couple years at least until they even start to work on the hotel.

Thank you so much for sharing your mom’s experience. She was very fortunate to have an employer who said to stay home. It will definitely take a long time to build back. My thoughts are with them and your mom for a quick recovery ❤️

I used to commute between Rutherfordton and Asheville. Because traffic was so bad on Fridays, I would often take the fun route through Chimney Rock. Landslides were common to the point where I had to reroute due to one more than once, but in spite of that I know there's no one who expected this level of destruction from a gulf tropical storm. Helene was absolutely outrageous and unbelievable here and along the entire blue ridge escarpment.
