Thank you for another visit down Memory Lane. Growing up in nearby Enfield, my parents would often take me to Roanoke Rapids when we needed to do some "big city" shopping. The sidewalks were crowded with pedestrians and we often had to park in the lots behind the downtown buildings because all the street spaces were taken. You are correct in that the corner store with the double set of glass entry doors was a department store. I don't recall if it was a Woolworth's but it was something very similar if not. On the other side of the street at the opposite end of downtown was another glass front department store which may have been a Kress or Rose's. The closed pizza place with the brick front was the Rosemary Restaurant. It had booths, tables and counter service and the wide selection on the menu was very good. We often had lunch or dinner there when in town. Remember it fondly.

I hope the crowds and awesome stores return one day. Thanks for sharing your memories with us . I can see it as it was through your words.👍

Back in the 60's I passed by Roanoke Rapids many times, but never had the occasion to go into the town. I'm glad that you stopped there Timothy, as it appears to be doing much better than what I envisioned it would look like. Thank you for showing me that the town is doing just fine.

You’re welcome. I think the town has a bright future if they can improve the streetscaping.

At one time Roanoke Ave did have some nice trees that lined the street and at Christmas was decorated with lights.

@Gladhart2024 I wonder what happened to them. Every town needs to be lined with trees in my opinion. I bet they looked awesome when wrapped with lights, Thanks for posting 👍

My aunt and uncle lived in this town all of their lives up until their passing a few years ago. They lived right on highway 158 I was only here once. The local papermill smell was enough to run me out of town 😂.

I can understand that 🤣

This is my hometown. The building at 10th Street and Roanoke Avenue was at one time the McCrory's Dept Store. I know at least during the 50's and 60's. The log trucks have been going down main street to the paper mill as long as I can remember. There was two town centers at one time. When Roanoke Rapids was incorporated, then we had uptown(where you were videoing) and downtown, where the movie theater was People's.

Thank you so much for that information. I was curious as to why it looked like it had two town centers. Now I know. It did. 👍

@TimothyFrench I want to say if you get a chance to come back to walk the Canal Trail and visit the Museum.
