You can't fault John Oliver for his relentless hazing, he is a man with a laser-sharp eye for situational comedy and a deep professional understanding of Stephen's predicament, so this is probably exactly why they invited him to the show that night. The way Stephen just let John bulldozer over himself, and even played into it a little, shows that it's all coming from a place of empathy, love and respect for each other. Brothers in arms!

That means that he did not get much sleep at all the previous night and he was basically running on fumes and caffeine. This led to a priceless comedic dance between him and John Oliver.
