Well the plan here is to build a full-width swingout. It will latch on the far opposite side. I quickly mocked up the fuel, propane and shovel while shooting this video but I also plan to incorporate some way to carry trash (as I have no rear-mounted spare tire for a trasheroo) and possibly a receptacle for some firewood. I have a buddy who fabbed a clever collapsing firewood basket on his swingout that I might try to replicate. What's coming next will be revealed soon. After my previous camper deal that didn't work out, I'm not taking any chances jinxing anything. 😆

@@mycbtech So sorry, I missed this reply! Just watched your video of your rear bumper. Really nice work, it looks great. Good point about getting around the full length of the single arm swingout in camp, I didn't really take that into consideration. That said, my setup is very driver-side oriented, with my fridge & small-item storage in the back seat driver side, cargo access to my (coming soon) new camper located on the driver side, eventual awning to be mounted driver side...once camp is set I *theoretically* don't have to access passenger side very often. I guess I'll see how that goes though. Based on some errors I've already made, I think this will likely end up being a v1 bumper that eventually gets replaced with a V2 bumper after I've seen and lived with all the additional errors I've yet to make, LOL. The jerry can holder is really nice. What secures the cans in place? Thanks again, this was awesome to see, very nice work!

Donald, if you're putting a shell with a long cab-over section like the AT or Vagabond have someone check the bed of the truck. I put a Summit on my Frontier and partly due to how low it sits and partly due to a very flexy bed I'm getting way more vertical movement than I'd like. (Read: enough movement that the cabover hits the fin antenna). At this point I need to find someone who can determine whether the flex is in the cabover, the bed/bed mounts, or the frame. Get whatever reinforcements you can ahead of time.

Think putting a swing arm on the back is a great idea. But, since your talking heavy steel, have you talked to the all dogs guys about the extra weight on the back and if your current setup has an allowance for extra weight. Not sure what your plan is for another bed topper also. So you may have to add leaf springs or heavier ones. You know there are swing arms that fit into the trailer receiver so you can remove them when not needed?
@softroadingthewest2 жыл бұрын
I actually meant to address this in the video and completely spaced it. My Alldogs parabolic rear springs are designed specifically for full-time load. They are waaaay underloaded currently, in fact even with my previous build fully loaded for a weeklong trip, I still didn't have enough weight in the rear and the truck was running raked. The new camp setup coming on the truck is ultra-light, and I've designed my bumper to be lighter than most swing-out bumpers. The removal of the stock bumper and removal of the aftermarket trailer hitch also sheds a very sizable chunk of weight. Based on my experience with this suspension and various loads I've run on it, I'm not worried at all about weight, in fact I'm hoping the end result is heavier than my previous build. 🙂 I'm not a fan of hitch mounted swing outs. The hitch is already a departure angle issue I'm constantly snagging. Part of the goal here is to improve that by eliminating that trailer hitch. In any case, commercially available hitch mount swing arms are generally set up for carrying a spare tire, which is not what I'm doing. What I'm building is overall going to be WAY less weight fully loaded than what the average overlander throws on the back of their rig.
@scottymac51742 жыл бұрын
That extra weight you plan on carrying... It could mean a rear suspension upgrade to handle it. I have a hitch carrier that I use for a small dual sport motorcycle. I needed to modify my 04 Tundra and added a set of rear airbags. About 350 extra lbs. with the MC carrier on. The airbag mod was cheap and simple.
@softroadingthewest2 жыл бұрын
@@scottymac5174 I have a rear suspension upgrade. I'm currently running at what is effectively negative payload or whatever. I actually need more weight on the truck for it to ride properly. The new bumper I'm building is nonetheless relatively lightweight for what it is and is largely offset by weight I am removing. 🙂

Maybe, but it's a pretty small space, and the tongues for the recovery points pass through and cut off access to the central portion. Morning, I do enjoy your watching your videos. I’m starting to armor my 2017 frontier and I just purchased Asfir skids after seeing them on your rig and All Dogs Off-road, I’d never heard of them before. What’s your opinion on them this far? Just wondering and how is it doing the oil filter change with them? Also like seeing the height difference with stock rear bumper vs your new one and how low the hitch sits. I tow quite often but definitely like the clearance without it. Thanks and keep doing what your doing 👍oh and how does the truck ride with the parabolic Springs you have without the extra weight of the cap and gear? I run empty half the time, so wondering if it’s too rough when empty?
@softroadingthewest Жыл бұрын
I'm able to change the oil without removing the skid plate. I end up needing to mop a little oil on top of the skid plate but overall much easier than removing the entire plate. Just enough room to reach in and access the filter. The ride is definitely stiff with no load on the parabolics. This is a temporary scenario for me as I'm planning to return to complete camping build on the truck full time. If you run empty some of the time it may not be the right choice. I would just talk it over with the guys at AllDogs.
