jobs in expensive cities adjust to the high cost of living. So if he made 120k in LA he'll probably make a lot less anywhere else out of California. If he moved to say Alabama doing the same job he'll maybe only make 60 or 70k per year instead.

I never understood why some people can’t budget in their head. In my opinion a written budget gives you an excuse to spend what is left over. The key to saving is not spending. Simple as that. And when you have to spend, be a cheapskate.

C Leh this always goes back to the free spirit types vs more logical thinking types. Many people just don’t think in concrete terms, they have vague ideas about their finances in their head and just wing it. It’s just how they’re wired and need guidance and training to think about their money in a different way.
@cynthiawaldorf93536 жыл бұрын
no it does give you an excuse to spend whats left over because "SAVING" now becomes part of your budget, rather then then just saying oh wow i have all this free left over money to do WHATEVER with. A budget at least holds you accountable for how you spend your money...

C Leh because keeping all those numbers in ones head is impossible to do with any real accuracy. Keep all those purchases in all those categories in a running tally for 30 days straight and see how accurate the numbers are. If your average lifestyle is already below what you make you'll be fine only because it happened to work out. As a species we are terrible guessers and grossly inflate our ability, just ask anyone how much they spend on Starbucks every month and they'll see not that much and then be shocked when shown the numbers. Tracking figures takes the human emotion out of the equation, the number is the number. In addition a written budget allows you to find efficiencies that can boost what you have left over. If you are doing a written budget and tracking numbers the chances of you suddenly deciding to spend every extra dollar on junk is quite low

I think this issue is quite simple. He's overspending because he feels like he can, as he has earned more this week/this month. Then, he finds himself eating into the money that he actually needs to pay his bills. When he's in receipt of a normal paycheck, he's not overspending as he is following the budget because he *can't* overspend and eat into the bill money. What he needs to do is act like he's always getting a normal paycheck, whether he is paid more or what he has budgeted to earn. Then, with any left over money, he can save a bunch of it and maybe give himself a 'treat' for having done the overtime. This 'treat' shouldn't be more then 25% of the amount that he has left. That's what I'd do anyway.

I'm working for holiday pay Monday and I already have a name for those extra wages. Part of them will be added to my "floating cushion" in my checking account for minor emergencies in and the other part will be "snowflakes" to my snowball which will hopefully start rolling mid month after I finish baby step 1!

Whenever you make any extra income you don't spend the extra money instead you put aside that difference to invest into something that'll bring in more money. This is what seperates the rich from everybody else they watch every dollar they earn.

ACR he’s not saying you cannot enjoy life. If he gets rid of his debt 1st, he can actually enjoy life by saving money to go places. That’s the poor mindset thinking that you should spend every single penny you make. I get extra money and I invest it because it’s not a part of my budget. What happens when you get older and have no money saved for retirement or emergencies. Oh you will end up on one of these other KZbin channels complaining that you’re homeless.

A few years ago I would do overtime to bring in more money for my family while raising a young family. I would go into work on a Saturday for eight to twelve hours and my wife didn't work at the time while our kid's were small. I would go to work and as soon as I left for work she would head to the store with the kids in tow and shop and spend away my overtime money as fast and at the same time I was making it. But if my job had a slow period with no overtime available she would behave herself and tighten the belt. Then when I would see hundreds of dollars missing from the checking account on the very day I did overtime due to her spending then excuses would ensue. Then find bags and bags of new clothes, shoes, nick knacks for the shelf in the living room and the arguing would then begin. Fast forward to today after I put her through college and a really good career in the medical field she doesn't spend nearly like she did years ago as by the time she gets home from work she doesn't have the energy to shop and besides I think she understands the value of a dollar now that she has to get up in the morning and contribute to the household income. As for me I don't do the overtime nearly like I used to either simply because I'm older now and can't work the hours like when I was younger and our household income has risen by five times the amount when our kids were younger.

Because poor people either know EXACTLY where every dollar goes and budget the sh** out of their money or have given up hope. I as a single parent was making $14K/yr with 4 kids AND still able to save. It can be done. Really. I have the "poor" advantage of either getting a deal or going without. I see how the middle class lets their money slide through their fingers like sand.

@C B atm i make only 42k a year and I don't feel anywhere near broke.. I just do simple math and know what I can spend. And no I'm not going crazy to figure about how to do it its actually easy. Now im single with no kids so yes that's a huge reason why but also because I'm not stupid with money.. I'm in a company I can move up to alot better paying positions, like within this year I'm hoping to get into 1 of the 2 I'm interested in. One makes about 55k with no OT and alot of times OT is available so obviously it could be much more and the other is 70k with no OT, all positions do have yearly raises.if I get one of those I would feel rich and that says something. And yes I dont have debt and I am saving money into my 401k (15%) and saving a bit on the side just into my account.
