One of my absolute favorite scenes in the whole show. I think it's the first time we really see Edward and not Blackbeard. His child-like mannerisms when he's rendered vulnerable as he recalls the trauma, the high-pitched, pouty choked sobs, the way he is looking for Stede's touch to soothe himself, it's so :(((( He's like a completely different person. Taika Waititi was amazing in this scene

@@aur1ta I feel this. I'm sure plenty of us do, unfortunately. I end up using those in my own characters for dnd. I haven't had the chance to really lean into it since my friends know I have these traumas and I don't want to scare them. But we do have an intense actor in the group who really dives in so maybe someday soon.

It's called age regression. It's a coping mechanism for trauma. He was about 13 when he killed his dad, so he's probably in a decently young mindset. Killing his abusive father was definitely traumatic for him.

According to David Jenkins, this is one of the first scenes they did together. Taika was really ready to just film it because he felt locked in to the moment and the character. He’s also said that this scene worked so beautifully because of how Rhys just listens and acts off of what Taika is giving him. So grateful they put so much into these moments.

Bonnet believes himself to be the worst human ever because he abandoned his family (even though it really was for the best and everyone WAS happier). Ed believes Bonnet to be the best because of how kind, caring and generous he is. Ed believes himself to be the worst because he’s hurt and killed people. Bonnet believes Ed to be the best pirate he’s ever seen. You can tell just how lonely and tired Ed was as Blackbeard.

I adore how even when faced with news that he was meant to be getting killed, Stede genuinely looks worried not about himself, but about Ed. There is something beautiful and so perfectly Stede about how his face just screams "Will this make you feel better?" rather than the expected "I don't want to die" when he suggests forgetting the whole idea!
@wandanemer2630
@wandanemer2630 2 жыл бұрын
So true! Stede HAS been shown to be a bit ambivalent about wanting to stay alive, to begin with, but it's VERY clear that what matters to Stede right now is Ed's wellbeing. At this point, Stede would have probably been okay with Ed killing him and taking over the ship since everyone else likes him so much... but he saw that Ed was miserable with the very thought of it, so tried to make him feel better by aliviating his guilt and be there for him. Such a sweetheart.

I agree with him. It's not about having kiss scenes, it's about seeing the characters having little intimate moments like this one. In Good Omens (if you didn't watch it, you should now), I think the best moment is when Crowley gives Aziraphale his books, then goes away and Azi looks at him while realising he can't deny anymore that he loved him.

Lordy this was so masterfully done. It's not often I see these types of regressive behaviors portrayed by men. Like, while he's having what I can only describe as a PTSD episode, his voice and mannerisms are very child-like (basically he's acting the age he was when he experienced that trauma). I feel like men's trauma responses are often only depicted as violent. I barely see this amount of sincere vulnerability and nuanced representation of childhood trauma in dramas, let alone in a "silly" comedy about pirates. Also once it switches to the next scene you clearly see and hear the difference in Taika's pitch and mannerisms when talking to the crew as opposed to when he's alone with Stede. He feels safe enough with Stede to let himself genuinely be vulnerable and work through what he's experiencing instead of just shutting down. It also helps that Stede handled the whole interaction wonderfully. It's honestly incredible. God I'm rambling and not sure if I'm making much sense but this is so beautifully done and you can tell it meant a lot to everyone who worked on it.
@elliart7432
@elliart7432 2 жыл бұрын
Fuck, regressive behavior in trauma is still usually ridiculed _in real life_ , let alone fiction. The fact that they showed a middle aged man having a flashback then curling up in a bathtub while talking childishly and played that aspect dead serious just shows the writers gave no fucks in the best way possible.

God this always makes me wanna cry. There’s just so much raw emotion in Taika’s performance. Ed’s not a character in this scene, he’s a real person that I wish I could reach out to and comfort with all my heart. Especially cause I, and so many others I know, cry exactly like this. It’s not pretty, it’s not eloquent, it’s just Ed having a hard time. And that makes it so easy to empathize with him.
