I've been wanting to do this experiment for a while, I even purchased a flask so it looks cooler :P I've been wondering, though, does this reaction consume anything? Would I have to add more glucose/indicator/air for the color change to continue, or could I seal it and it would work indefinitely? Thanks for reading!

@danielemicucci4788
@danielemicucci4788 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think you're going to have that problem because both the glucose and the indicator are merely changing their oxidation number,and those are reversible processes. The oxygen instead gets absorbed into the solution when you shake the flask and then it returns into its gas state. Alternatively you can think it like this,a closed flask is a closed system (meaning that no matter can escape) and all the reactions happening are subject to equilibrium (are reversible),add in Lavoisier's principle(during a chemical reaction no matter is destroyed, everything transform) and the only logical conclusion is that the reagents won't be consumed "permanently" or at least I think so

Daniele Micucci but how can I keep making it change colors infinitely?
@TheActionLab
@TheActionLab 5 жыл бұрын
Depending on how much sugar, oxygen and indigo carmine you have in the closed bottle it will eventually come to an equilibrium and will remain only one color (maybe yellow, red, or green depending on how much glucose and oxygen you had). Once it is at equilibrium, even if you shake the bottle, nothing will happen because all of the reactants (the limiting reagent of glucose, oxygen or indigo carmine) have already been used. This process can be reversed by opening the lid and adding more glucose or oxygen or indigo carmine and then you would see a color change temporarily again. The only reason you are seeing a color change in any of these experiments is because you aren't at equilibrium yet. So, a sealed bottle would just get to an equilibrium, most likely just end up yellow since you are usually putting in excess glucose and le chatelier principle will push equilibrium to yellow.

Question is it possible to make light stop moving? To directly slow down light to a point where it's visible to either directly see it's motion or just doesn't move at all? I feel like. Both yes and no because it is a particle so yes but it's never been done so no? So on the other side of that what would it require for you to be able to stop lights movement?

@gbormann71
@gbormann71 5 жыл бұрын
More like oscillating between two phases. When it's half way, it is red (i.e. absorbing both blue and green light from the white ambient light). As he stated, more glucose merely increases the rate of reduction. However, apparently, to restart the cycle you'd have to shake (or put it on a magnetic mixer). This suggests either there is phase separation or a very low activation barrier to invert the reaction. Oh, there is a third possibility: the shaking increases oxygen uptake (though there appears to be a cover preventing atmospheric exposure and hence oxygen exposure).
