Both are very cool and deserve respect. As someone who watched a lot of videos about it, I can say both have good and bad sides, things that one is better to do than another. But I think the reason redstone is the one that most people did are two: 1- It sounds harder to do for people in general, because the image of command blocks as something that could do everything, sou redstone sounds amazing because is hard and you could do i vanilla, even tho this isn't 100% true 2- For things more computer like, the redstone is close to how a actual computer works, with the Not Gates, Or Gates, and gates and all of that using binary and all

From the sounds of things, you only programmed promotion to a queen. There are many cases where it’s an infinitely better idea to “underpromote” to something else, and can even lead to a promotion checkmate. I would suggest you add that function in if you haven’t already.

regarding the bot moving its pawn forward instead of capturing, im guessing thats because you specifically added a obesity reduction for boards with less coverage around the king, and that would keep the pawn within range while capturing would not have.
