I'd like to point out that the part at 1:30 is an M.2 Solid State drive. While it fills the same role as a hard drive, it probably wont come up if you search for "hard drive" and nothing labelled as a hard drive will work in those ports
@MelodicTurtleMetal
@MelodicTurtleMetal 5 ай бұрын
"thin hard drive" gave me a couple. Regardless, nobody taking on this endeavour would likely make that error
@themustangmachine
@themustangmachine 5 ай бұрын
Correct me if I am wrong, however, both solid state drives (NVMe & SATA) and hard disk drives can all be referred to as hard drives. I'm just bringing this up for the sake of technicality. I do agree with you that if someone wanted to find what he was using, specifying "M.2 SSD" would be much more appropriate.
@Barrelpants
@Barrelpants 5 ай бұрын
@@themustangmachine I would disagree and say that, no, SSD and HDD should not be referred to as hard drive. HDD, or hard disk drive, are called that because of the platter inside is a hard disk. Where as SSD, solid state drive, are more like memory modules with no moving parts. I would argue that the term "storage" should be the more appropriate word to use when referring to either storage device. There are plenty out there that would agree that using hard drive to refer to an SSD would be incorrect. Just like when I hear people who want to add more storage to a phone or tablet saying "I need to add more memory."
@themustangmachine
@themustangmachine 5 ай бұрын
@@Barrelpants Yes, you are correct. I didn't mean to suggest that a SSD is in any way similar to a HDD besides the fact that they are both forms of persistent storage. I was trying to articulate that both SSDs and HDDs are often referred to colloquially as "hard drives" rather than "storage" because HDDs have been the dominant form of persistent storage until fairly recently. I always find it a little funny when people say they need more memory in their mobile devices. I am also amused when people think their SIM card has some impact on their system storage.
@Barrelpants
@Barrelpants 5 ай бұрын
@@themustangmachine I hear you. We have used HDDs for so long it can be hard to break using hard drive as the term. However, we have been using SSDs for long enough to where they are replacing HDDs that the confusion needs to recognized and corrected. Have not heard someone trying to use the SIM card as the storage means. But that is also quite silly.
