Wow, this brings back memories. Mom did an Oriental rug that she designed from a wallpaper she loved. She put the canvas in the washer with fabric softener overnight to soak and then did the rinse cycle twice. Her yarn was all pre-cut and packaged. Using the latch hook was a diagonal in and out. Twist, push, twist, pull. She ended up taping her thumb and first finger bc of the blisters. The gloves your hubby chose are brilliant. Finger dexterity and feel. Yes, work row by row. I was curious how you were working around rounded sections. Mom's joke: she was the Happy Hooker. LMBO She bound the edges with twill tape and I don't remember if she backed it or not. I DO know that it was machine washable. Animals, kids and everyday use necessitated that.

I'm using my brother's dumbells to weight the canvas down. I normally put it on the table, or on the sofa (as i like to sit on the floor, so the sofa is on my... shoulder height in that moment) So i have both hands available to work, since i don't need to push the canvas down while stitching - the dumbells are doing this for me. Also, depening where you do it: if you do it on a table, let it be falling down on the floor, not on your tights (cause the canvas is stiff, and it hurts after some time) and get the piece, the row you are working on right now to be at the... i don't know the english words - to be benind, right at the edge of the table. Cause the table is a hard material, you would need to rise the canvas to get a hook under it - not if you put the working row right after the edge of the table. You have a space under it to put the hook under the canvas, and you don't need to push the canvas down to get the hook out - thanks to the dumbells laying on the canvas on the table. Oh, and if it is a wide canva - get a chair on the wheels, so it won't take any problems to get from left to right without breaking the flow of work. If you do it on the sofa - well, i also work on it like "sitting next to a wall", working on the "falling down" piece of canvas, cause the height is more approiprate that weight, and my arms aren't getting sore as quickly. But because the sofa is a soft material - i just push down and it gets the hook under the canva The last place/position i do this latched hook rugs/pillows, is sitting like you on bed, but i put a pillow on my tights, and spread out the canva with the working area on the pillow - this one will work with that Moss type you did ^^ And the dumbells just either in front if i sit with my legs crossed, and the canva is long enough, or at the sides of my legs if i sit with them straight (again, if the canva is long enough) With all that settings i'm working with the stiff type of the canva, not against it, and trying to force it and bend to my will. Also the curling around the tool that you did is not really necesarly. I mean - if you like it do it! I usually do it one way, but when i get bored i change it for a little to just have other filling/movement of my wrists - so do it the way you like it. But i recomend you try this at least: put the fabric piece with your left hand on the canva in the right place, just under the whole, with hook in your right hand - put it on the fabric, push through the wholes. Don't realise the hook fro your hand. Also, the hook shouldn't be up, it can lay down, or be at a slight ankle. Grab the two sides of the fabric with your left, bend the fabric up, so it will end on that hook, and start... again the word... pushing backwards? the tool with your right hand. The latch of the hook will start closing on itself, traping two pieces of the fabric between the hook and a latch. Done. It takes some practise, but in the end it ends up as 6 movements to be done: grab a piece, lay a piece, push the tool, grab the piece, bend up, pull the tool. Instead of: 13:38 grab a piece, grab a tool, push the tool, grab a piece with both hands, push it under the tool, grab it with one hand, grab the tool, bend the tool to have hook higher, wave piece arouind the hook, pull the tool

What's funny as I watch it - I actually find the latch hook embroidery to be actually one of the fastest one XDDD I don't know, maybe i just don't know too many of them, but compared to hand stitching letters, or to paint by numbers, or to cross embroidery - even the bead emroidery is slower, because of my force issues i keep braking the thread witch slows me down. Maybe the diamiond paintings? Those are fast, but i can't change posisions as freally as with... literally everything else. And comparing the size of an outcome - latch hook embroidery is fast! xD

My hook rug tips: TIP #1: WEAR GLOVES - Latex gloves made for house cleaning and dishwasher OR the thin garden gloves with the rubberized palms and fingers. I use the latter. TIP #2: Fold the edges where three to five hooks areas are from the edge towards the center for it to be strong enough not to ever come apart and do those first so the edges won't cut or irriate when you do the rest of the rug. TIP #3: If you want to do hook rugs THE ORIGINAL WAY like how my grandmother taught me. Use a CROCHET HOOK and BURLAP. My grandmother kept burlap bags that a lot of food items were originally packaged in. Hook rugs were developed by the poor and they used things from scraps of fabric to yarn or string scraps on burlap bags. So even with the modern Hook Rug Canvases,mI still use my crochet hooks.

I've been wanting to make my own rugs for ages. Oh, check coffee roasters in your area to see if they possibly have burlap bags. We got some free prior to covid, but our supply dried up thanks to post-CV supply chain garbage.

@@stephhhie17 thank you, I appreciate it. I wasn't understanding that from the OP, but the way you put it makes sense, even if it sounds like a difficult thing to do with such stiff material. I still think a good demonstration video would be a good thing, if that's her particular skill. I think we have some old burlap coffee sacks, so I think I'd use that, unless I can score some canvas for really cheap at a thrift store. (One near us runs 70-90% off their tag prices on different areas of the store when they need to move inventory.) I think canvas would hold up better over the long run, but burlap backing would be easier to work.

And my mom just gave me two garbage bags full of precut yarn from a crafter hoarder friend who recently passed away. So maybe I’ll be making some rugs in the near future.

Oh, the crafting hoarder inheritance! I inherited a ton of yarn from my aunt who passed two years ago and I am still working my way through it. It does make me think of her when I crochet or (learning to) knit. Very cozy. I’ve come to realize most crafters are hoarders to some extent, either just from the sheer amount of different crafts they do (me) or bc they can’t bring themselves to waste anything (yarn scraps are great when it’s a jar full... )

I've seen it done where you pull up a series of loops from one continuous thread (rather than cut individual threads), then when you cut pile to the desired height, you also cut through the loops.

I have been learning to make tabletop roleplay type terrains for polymer clay dioramas. And quilting. And I bought a punch needle and canvas during the panini after watching someone make art rugs that way. Seeing this rug, plus the artists you linked, is making me wonder if textile dioramas could be a fun thing to try. I’ve also been watching Rachel Maksy embroider a moss bodice, and the Closet Historian make beaded bug brooches, and now my head is swimming with ideas to combine all these disparate elements into small scale textile versions of the clay and resin dioramas I’ve been trying to replicate. 🤯

Your vid’s are such a highlight of my week. One tip I remembered from rug hooking when I was a kid is to use masking tape folded over the edge, all around, when you’re working on it. It covers the super sharp pointy bits on the edges of the canvas, so it doesn’t catch on things, or scratch you all to hell. It also prevents fraying of the edges. You remove the tape before binding and finishing it.

Your rug turned out beautifully! The little stones are my favorite part too. Dollar Tree has quite a good crafting section these days including several sizes of pom pom makers and tons of yarn. Along the lines of other projects, I have been seeing these cute abstract shaped mirrors with moss around the edges (especially settled at the bottom). Could be a cute way to take pics of yourself in your studio as well as use up your leftover yarn. Maybe with some large stones and your pretty plants around it? I’m so glad that you got your ceilings fixed. Looking forward to seeing your new floors and other home projects!

When I started latch hooking in the 70s we put masking tape around the canvas. I still do it today. It helps protect your hands and anything else the canvas might touch.

I LOVE this! It's so whimsical and fairy 🧚‍♀️ 🧚‍♂️ like. I was surprised you didn't rubber glue the back. I mean the felt was a super nice touch but even if you just used mod podge it would assure that the stands are attached to the backing. But there is a rubber that would hold the fibers in place and prevent the rug from slipping (think bathroom throw rugs?) Regardless it is stunning! I'm so so so in love! I don't think I'm ambitious enough to do this project but if I do there must be a few red and white pom poms for mushrooms! 🍄🍄🍄

Pro tip for pompoms: Use multiple strands of yarn in various colors and sizes to build one pompom. It will give you fun textures and patterns that you wouldn't get by using just one yarn to build it!

The rug is really pretty. We did something similar to this as a school art project & used burlap fabric & a punch needle so loops could be different lengths. Your poms & different size loops add so much more texture. I love it.

For future reference: pull from the inside of the yarn ball. There will be a somewhat tangled clump of yarn with one end going into the innards of the ball, and when you untangle it, that's the end you want to work with. It behaves much better than unwrapping from the outside. Also, you can use multiple strands of yarn at once while wrapping a pompom so it goes faster. Depending on your scissors and yarn thickness, you can also cut your rug strands several at a time! EDIT: lol you just mentioned the center yarn trick! And those scissors so look like a pain.

Have you ever thought about trying silk dye painting? I do something similar with my current art (actually that may be fun too-you can paint with disperse dyes on white bond paper and then transfer via heat to fabric. On synthetics they are very vibrant, more muted on natural fibers, and if you print twice the second one will have more of a watercolor effect. I find it’s very easy to do a paint by numbers style painting with these, so not terribly daunting, hopefully), but silk dye painting has always seemed so beautiful, and would make a great base fabric for a pretty skirt.

Also my grandpa used to make latchhook rugs, there was a time where you could buy big kits for all sorts of shapes and designs (they came with a canvas the correct size and fabric binding and possibly the glue as well and also a sign that you could sew on that said "made by hand") and he'd just sit in his study working on them for hours. There were several bug or other animal rugs for my sister and I when we were kids and my parents house still has so many doormats and rugs he made, although I think a wall hanging that used to be there isn't up anymore. There were also several pillow covers. The moss rug turned out really cool! If I can find some canvas maybe there's another fiber art I could get into.....

I learned from a lovely old friend that if you buy second hand yarn, you'll want to make sure that it's not pulled tight if it's wrapped into a ball 🧶. You want it to have some stretch in it. If it doesn't have that stretch, your project will warp over time. That bit of advice saved who knows how many projects from ruin! I gave my yarn that I'd purchased second hand that wAs stretched out to a friend who is just learning, but if you have some of that in your stash? This is a perfect craft for it! I love it! Congratulations on moving into your house! Man, I LOVED latch hook as a kid. I made so many rugs, turning them into cushions and I gave one as a rug to a friend. My last one was a giant tiger that was probably 3' × 5'. It literally took a couple of years, since I only worked on it for a couple weeks a year when I was home from touring with my theatre troupe. That moss rug is cute, I might be tempted to do something similar (and smaller) but all in purples.

Exquisite! I love that you are able to be inspired by photos then figure out how to do it yourself ❤. Your pupper clearly needs a big soft rug in every room😂. It’s absolutely adorable how much he loves it❤ I’ve been researching various rug techniques for years and there are several I want to try but haven’t yet buckled down and started one. I’ve got lots of punch and tufting tools that I acquired with vintage sewing machines that I rescued at estate sales. I really want to try twining and toothbrush rugs too. There is also a couple of methods where you sew fabric scraps to a foundation that look really cool 😂. Someday I will settle on one and actually make it😂

My granny made rag rugs, some using scrap fabric latch hooked through hessian sacks, so you can do it for cheap if you hoard scraps... she also made woven rugs using scraps for the weft. If you have the space for it you could give weaving a go!

Congratulations getting into the house!! It been a very long time since match hooking was a thing in my life. I really think it was the 60's but it could have been the early 70's. Anyway I remember the edges of the canvas where either bound with fabric or tape. As all the designs were square the edges were folded in and latched into the rug. The only other thing I would mention is that you might want a no slide backing. Felt and hardwood could end up with unintended consequences! If my grandcats were there they would be surfing your room on the rug!

You could use tandoor embroidery for the water in your next rug project. It is basically crochet through canvas. And you have very long, agile toes.

At first, I thought you were making a bathroom rug of actual moss. I thought cool I want to make but don't know how. Then you pulled out the latch hook backing and my hands and arms automatically went "eewww! Pain! No! Don't touch! Didn't you learn this!" It turned out so cool! ❤❤❤❤

I love your rug!!!! I have no idea what tufting is, but I'll be looking it up. I think for me the water doesn't read as water because in my head, it's too grey BUT even if it doesn't read as water to me, it looks fantastic :D Thanks so much for sharing, and best of luck on the house!!!

Thank you for this project, this was a very comprehensive guide to doing it. I also Recently saw free form crochet versions of this kind of rug/blanket. I very much appreciate the tips on some of the practical thing like matching the hook and yarn size, the scratchy issue of the canvas and how to best hold the project while working it. All super useful info. I might have ironed a iron on backing on the back and possibly added a non slip material to the underside, but your method was totally great as well. Will I make one? Maybe. I’m a professional felter so I never have time to make my own projects for myself but this definitely give me 💡 and you are very enjoyable to watch! Happy creating!

This is absolutely great, and you yourself are so inspirng (hit a problem/make mistake, just figure things out and get on with it ftw) As for your canvas, and most fabrics come to that; find a way to hang it in the bathroom and take a nice hot shower - the steam will soften any stiffner or other treatments, easing creases/folds and making it easier to work (so less abrasions, too). Also, I've seen latch hook (and similar) rugs being worked in the lap, especially with wearing a heavy cotton apron and smoothing it over a thigh! I might try making a smaller one using much of the odds and ends tucked away here. I have tried a similar craft, pushing strips of rags through hessian to make rugs (it has several names, but I think it is sometimes called toothbrush rug?) that I saw some finer pieces done to work into clothing projects, I'm tempted to try some of that to mke myself a work bag. This worked out much longer than I planned. Thanks for helping me wprk myself out of a slump!

Gorgeous! Two tips from someone who makes collage type rugs (so using lots of different sections and contouring and shaving). I hate working on that huge canvas so I usually cut it into pieces. I work on a small section at a time and when that’s done I take a new piece, overlap it by a row or two and stitch it together. Also when I’m finished hooking, I paint rug latex on the back before I go in and shave. I sometimes shave some areas down pretty short and this keeps it all in place!

when I latch-hook, I work sideways, its very similar to yours except I start on the right side and work towards the left, with the finished work held down by my right hand/arm and the hook pointing to the left. I also find it easier to work on a flat surface rather than something soft because then I can slide straight through and not get caught on whatever is under it. I like latch-hooking, but you are right in that is very hard on the hands, the canvas is VERY stiff, but as you add the yarn the creases will flatten out.

My mum and grandparents in the UK used to make semi circular rugs like this in the air raid shelters during WW2. They were printed with designs and were used in front of the fireplace. They lasted for many decades and unfortunately got thrown out when my nan's house was sold in the 1970's. For Christmas in 1963 my mum and dad bought me a tiny door mat size rug kit with a black Poodle dog on it. I loved making it and wish I still had it. Xx

easy way make pompoms masspruduce way. turn a chair wrong way. between 2 legs keep on fill in with yarn. alot. more then alot. when done alot do alot more. then you tie a string on spots after that bulk of lots of yarn with twice the measurments between each knot with long strings as you want your balls. then have a verry sharp scissor and kut between thos tied up things you just made. and you make sevral in one go. I hope that was understandeble. the bigger you want the pompoms and the more compact you want them the more yarn you roll up and it´s tricky but even the part goes around the legs can be uses so no waste. just harder to get string in there

I was thinking I might make a rug that was all pompoms stuck together for my grandson's nursery. So glad your closing drama is over, and hopefully the larger part of the renovations will wrap soon (I have serious fridge envy). Can't wait to watch you organize your new space!
