its my first season trapping and I'm excited to that water set with skunk essence. I also have some 220s that I plan to make box sets with for fisher and bobcat!

Awesome Adam, Its so exciting to get started! I wish you lots of luck and am happy if I can help. What State are you in? Considering the laws here in New York "You may set a trap in a permanent body of water only when the mink, muskrat, otter, or beaver season is open." I just wanted to make sure I did not mislead anyone. That said the scent stick set can as well be made on the ground right next to the water. I look forward to hear how you do on Bobcats, one of my favorites to harvest!

Thanks Larry! Secretly- I'm working on an episode focusing just on him. Willie, the amazing trapper doodle! Seriously other trapper employ dogs on the line in various helpful ways, which I hope to highlight.

On my dirt sets I place the trap so that the loose jaw rests on the stake head. I then use a Mytling trap bedder to keep the jaws from closing if I bump the pan. This allows me to pack the jaws inside and out. I then place a soft leaf under my trap pan to keep sifted dirt from blocking the pan. Most of my traps are night latched. Nice video.

@@alligatorhorse gotcha, sounds pretty solid. I used to carry large wood screws with me. If needed I would screw it down under the loose jaw, to rest on it. I did catch a few coyotes and fox in those set, but after I got better at straight bedding I gave those up. If possible I prefer less stuff with me 😂. Go get em!

The fisher season in the People's Republic of New Yorkastan opens WAY too early.. I'm sure it will never change.. Except if the DEC gets rid of it...

Yeah and actually everything opens too early if prime fur is the goal. Which in my case it mostly is. I saw an article in Trapper's Post about using fruit based lure in fisher sets until the snow falls. Interesting, I might try it. God knows what I've done so far hasn't worked LOL.

What’s the first thing you do with the hide/fur in the field right after you’ve skinned the animal?

Sorry I missed this comment when it came in. So far I have not skinned in the field. Although if I was far from my fur shed I certainly would. If I did I would just roll up the furs and pack them into my ATV or pack, then plan to scrape and stretch them at my shed. The colder I could keep them the better, so if its freezing out that would be a bonus. I also try to roll them up tail in, so I can hang them by the head, and the fur rolls out with gravity as it thaws. I hope this helps and if anyone has better ideas please let me know.

So my line(s) are close enough to my fur shed that I'm back there in the same day. Since I have my brush, knives, big steel(that I use to pull down the back and legs) and my speed gambrel,,,Its easiest for me to get them there. That said I like the idea of skinning in the field, especially if I am ever far from my shed. I'd gear myself for that when the time comes. I roll them fur side out, purposely so I can hang them by the nose and they will "gravity" unroll, when I have time to scrape and stretch. Then my only issue is freezer space, hoping not to run our before I have time to scrape. Timeline of a part time trapper, challenging LOL. I use as much as I can from the carcasses. Running low on beaver meat, so the raccoons are now getting cut for the next 3 weeks of fisher sets. I hope this helps!

Oh and if I was in the field, right after I brush out and skin I would just bring a garbage bag to stuff the furs in until I can get to where ever I'm going to get them either scraped and stretched(drying) or frozen. I'm absolutely interested in what anyone else would do to avoid slip. As we know, as soon as that animal is dead the fur will start to age and bacteria going to work.
