Stuff happens. I remember a sale where a real competitor to me was at a sale and the people brought out two boxes of records. He took the left box, me the right. His was full of Grandmas big band stuff, mine had the kids Stones, Zeppelin, Floyd etc. Boy was he steamed. But then again our roles could’ve been reversed. Luck of the draw sometimes.

I think reselling albums is only beneficial if you have a booth like this guy. It doesn't seem to me worth the aggravation selling them on ebay. They seem to go for about 5-8 dollars on average and shipping would be a hassle.

@Pink Alien the real good ones don't have a barcode though. Old jazz and certain classical are were it's at. Some 45s and 78s are also great. Discogs and eBay can help figure those out.
@JJM3rd
@JJM3rd 3 жыл бұрын
Oh, there’s plenty of valuable records that have barcodes. The barcodes first started showing up on products around 1979 or so, so any records older than that won’t have barcodes. It takes a bit more effort to look them up on Discogs than just scanning a barcode, but it’s still not that difficult. “Blond” by Frank Ocean most definitely has a barcode and that sells for upwards of $500.

Aloha John! Great vid as always. FYI - the Poi Dog record you got is by Rap Reiplinger - a hilarious comedian from Hawaii (from back in the day). He died back in the 80s but was pretty well known (and still is) here in the islands. He had some great local comedy sketches and I remember listening to them when I was younger (on cd, that is lol). Everybody is saying “The other guy got all the good stuff!” Well, as the saying goes, one man’s trash is another’s treasure. I’ve been to plenty of record stores and sales where people will go through a box and pull things out, and then I’ll go through it and still pull out good stuff. What’s “good” is relative, and some people aren’t hardcore record nerd collectors, they just get what they like and don’t know about other types of music. I’m a huge record collector and my knowledge spans a lot of genres, and it serves me well in finding valuable records. Any chump can look at a stack and know that the Stones or Zeppelin, etc, records are worth a bit. My breadth and depth of knowledge lets me find the stuff that the classic rock guys thumb past with no clue it’s worth more than the dad rock they’re trying to find. So just because that guy got first crack doesn’t mean there wasn’t still stuff to be had... You passed over that Moody Blues record and that probably could easily fetch you $8-10 in the booth (depending on condition, of course). But the thing you learn by doing this long enough is, there will always be more! On to the next!

Hi John! You are skill building. The other day while waiting to be picked up at the AutoZone store in Walton, KY, I was killing time by "beach combing" their rock garden. I was talking to a clerk having a cigarette break. In less than a minute, I spotted a stone that had fossilized coral. It looked very much like a Petoskey stone (Hexagonaria). I told the guy all about it. They fetch about $10 at a gem and mineral show. I put it back next to a tree. It feels good when the trained eye is still working. You win some, you lose some, but the skill you keep.

You never know at a garage sale what kind of expertise the other buyers have. Obviously, in this case, it was a rock collection and the other buyer knew what to take. However, in different genres of music, other buyers might know little or nothing. So for best results, you should study up on all the genres of music. The best way to do this is to go to eBay, pick each sub-genre of records, and go to sold items by US sellers sorted by price high to low. You will see all the top jazz, classical, folk, and blues, so you will have some idea of what is valuable. If you're in the business for a long time, you will develop an instinct about what might be good. Skilled record dealers can flip through records in genres they don't know that well and still manage to find the ones to they should take. They make mistakes, of course, but they are surprisingly accurate.

If you do YS frequently that record situation can happen to the best of us. However, you handled the situation like a professional and stayed cool. I have seen fist fights over stupid YS items!? You have to ask you're self. ... "is it worth it?" The answer is always... NO... its not worth someone getting hurt or injured. Worst case you could go to jail or get into lawsuit over a piece of JUNK. You didn't even mooch in and try to get the records when the other guy was buying them in front of you. There are times when you have to stand your ground and not be a pushover but you have to remember. ....is it worth it? I'm very impressed and it does sting when it happens to you. ..remember there is enough junk for all of us. Good job brother.

Ouch....I know that pain. Vinyl record buying is a very competitive game right now. That first guy got all the good stuff. After he was done, there were only pure crapola titles remaining. Sadly all but two of the $1 records you got will be hard to sell...even for $1-$2. That's why the first guy left them. Most of those are always "hard-pass" titles. Every record store in the country has $1-$2 bins full of those titles and often won't even take them on trade because of space considerations. Dave Mason titles are only slightly better...but still usually a "pass" unless they are promotional pressings, in pristine condition or are a special pressing. You might be able to bundle those Dave Mason LPs and make your $ back on those.

The tracking number should show if it has been delivered or not. If it has, then you are in the clear. Not your problem AFTER delivery has been made. Your job is to get it from your place to the buyers place and once tracking confirms that, your job is done.
