Stunning, I can't imagine how happy you must be with the finished product. If there was ever a comment to make, I'd say having a rounded back makes the original GBC relatively comfortable to hold even with adult hands (much more so than the SP or pocket). It would be a nice design touch to have it carried over in a scaled down version even if it doesn't make it all that much more ergonomic to hold (given its size).

And, to the people on Etsy that are willing to build and sell completely assembled Tad Boy Colors to those of us like me who are unsure about our capability of not absolutely wasting money because we screwed something up, I'm very very happy to have ordered one! This is such a cool gadget, I had to get one to hold in my hands and use. I really hope you keep working on fun side-projects like this! I'd love to see your take on something similar but with the GBA SP! I know there's already the Unhinged and Slate designs out there, but the more novel approaches people like you come up with, the better it is for the rest of the community.

This is inspiring! I very recently decided I want to start learning how to design my own PCBs. My goal is to eventually reach the level of detail and refinement that you’ve achieved here! Fantastic work! My first project, which will probably take a long while, will be the GBA. I plan to try and design a PCB which will hold the GBA’s CPU, RAM, and other default connectors, along with the circuitry for the USB-C battery, and the components for HDMI output through the same USB-C connector used for charging so it can be docked like a switch. I already verified this concept works, because I just successfully combined FunnyPlaying’s Modded GBA motherboard with HispeedIdo’s HDMI Docking kit. And it works. Except for sleep mode; the screen stays on, for some reason. But everything else works. Now I just have to teach myself how to do everything you did in this video. But life’s no fun if I’m not learning something new! I can’t wait to try this GBC mod you’ve masterfully done, and hopefully one day you’ll see what I create from what you’ve inspired. Cheers!

What is your process for placing components like buttons and ports in the correct spot on the PCB? I really struggle with dimensioning things like that when using KiCad, and knowing how you do it would be really helpful. Thank you!
@leggomyfroggo3 ай бұрын
The process I use actually depends on what type of component, and generally happens in two stages, rough placement and then one or more refinement steps To start, the PCB shape is designed in Fusion based on the shape of the shell. Things like screw holes, keying notches and such are added here, and the CAD file remains the source of truth for these. For SMD parts like buttons, I'll drop holes through the board where they should be centered -- again based on where those would be on the shell -- so when I export the shape for use in KiCad, I know where to put them. I then generate a sketch from the surface, and export that as a DXF. In KiCad I import the DXF for use as the board outline, and as long as the units I'm using in Fusion and KiCad are the same, the size will be correct automatically. Face buttons are placed relative to the pre-placed markers, and that's basically it for those. For things like ports or buttons on the side where you need more complicated cutouts, those are driven more by the PCB layout. I'll place the footprints for those on the PCB where I'm reasonably certain they won't interfere with pre-existing features on the shell. It's super important to have accurate CAD files associated with these footprints, because I then export a STEP file of the board -- components and all -- and import that back into Fusion. Back in fusion, I line up the imported board model with the dummy to get the positioning right. For cutouts it's a matter of creating sketches on the relevant surfaces of the shell, then projecting the key geometry from the imported PCB onto the sketch to get the shape right. Hope that helps!
