Honestly this way of doing shadows is ingenious, I might consider implementing it in my 3D minecraft-like shooter game, as long as the sun is in a fixed position (which it is in my game, unlike Minecraft) and the intensity of the shadow effect is toned down, it could look pretty believable in a 3D setting while being completely friendly to low end hardware and allow an infinite shadow view distance

This is so charming, and I personally think that even without things like a player character, mobs, or chunk loading, this port does an amazing job capturing the spirit of classic Minecraft. The isometric graphics, simplistic shadows, and poppy colors also feel really nostalgic. Thanks for making this, I’m always fascinated by demakes and interpretative ports!

I really, _really_ appreciate how you designed the game to look like Minecraft Classic - it fits perfectly around the era of calculators, and it's nice, vibrant and cheerful, as well as having that endearing limitations that make you take more creative liberties. One day he came to me and showed me that he found out how to play games on his calculator (it was mandatory in our school). Great video, Science Elf! Was not aware you were even making an isometric minecraft game until now. Unfortunately I never got around to finishing my own isometric minecraft version, as I ran into memory errors and some other bugs… I love the shadows you did in your version, and I think it would also be really easy if you implemented an option to render your world from any of the 4 corners, so kind of a form of rotation. Anyway, really great work, and thanks for the feature! At least your version actually runs lol

@TheScienceElf The Cemetech thread you linked should now have a working download for the program. If it still doesn't work, make sure you have enough RAM space by moving important files to archive and then doing a RAM clear. Also, do note that the latest working version does not contain redstone. Also when sending the program to your calculator, make sure you are sending it to the archive, not RAM.

Oh, you did the same thing I brought to Michael2_3b's attention at the time: your blocks don't look cubical. For that, the grid at 5:27 should consist of equilateral triangles. Yes, that means your sprites can't be square. Compare to Michael2_3b's screenshots I guess? Also, minor addition, Crafti's graphical glitches stem not just from affine texture mapping, but also because it uses integer arithmetic. I find those graphical glitches much worse while actually building things, because you just can't tell where block boundaries are.

There are a few TI-84 emulators, like Wabbitemu or the official TI SmartView.

According to some people here, the game is written in C++, so if somebody were to port the input system and tweak it a little bit, it would theoretically be possible to play it on a modern-day computer Edit: they'd have to use a different graphics library though

Scrap my previous reply, there is an emulator you can use on your PC, it's called "CEmu". I'm not sure if I can lik to it here on KZbin

This was really neat! Thoroughly enjoyed the video, also was refreshing to hear GUI pronounced "gooey" at 9:00 hahah, been a while since i've heard that one Plus what a cute little showcase world at the end! I wanna go make that in-game now, as in actual mc lol Update: This is a perspective dimensions nightmare; certainly difficult, but that won't stop me from trying update again: I haven't come back to this in a little while, but made a fair amount of progress before. It has to be built in such a specific order lol

If you don't mind me asking, where did you develop skills like this? I go to uni for stuff like this and I couldn't imagine anyone being as proficient as you without having formal education or work experience, if so, that's amazing. Especially considering the understanding of the hardware at play here as well. Your channel is phenomenal👍

Yeah, as someone in high school who is constantly being asked "how are you so good at computer science" in my first year of doing it, I must say that actually doing stuff yourself helps a lot more in computer science than going to some programming courses

Remember that the first person to come up with isometric rendering, or scroll buffers, or ambient occlusion or any of the techniques used today were just mere mortals who never went to formal education for this stuff. Yes, you need the math fundamentals and yes, professors can certainly guide you on your journey and put more tools in your toolkit, but ultimately, there is no learning like self-discovery. Get out there and play! just ... try a thing. Maybe start small with a gfx library in Unity (*cough, evil cough*) or even Javascript. Or jump head long into using a 3d game engine or write your own shaders. The secret? Just do. (ps yes, this is truly an amazing channel and I love his work)

You won’t learn a thing in college to actually train you to do something like this. You will learn the theory of how software functions and mathematics behind the scenes. It is up to you to have the self discipline to sit down and figure this out. Be grateful ChatGPT will mostly answer your questions because I only had Stack Overflow and that website is cursed with horrible power-hungry people. I would have done so much better in college with the resources available nowadays.

@@shadesoftimesame here. Learn yourself because courses arent going to teach you what you need. I learned how computers work down to the cpu architecture and logic gates for building computers in minecraft. I learned how to put in asm instructions into my TI-84 calculator using the tables for the Z80 processor. I learned how to code just by going and doing it. Ive never taken any class on programming and I would definitely say I have as much, if not more experience than a kid straight out of college.
