A hint for staining balsa. Put a layer of finish, such as shellac, which can be sprayed and is very fast drying. Then stain it. This will prevent the stain from being blotchy and absorbing too quickly. After wiping off the excess stain, allow it to dry before deciding if it needs a second stain layer. Finish with another coat of shellac.
@mjpete2710 ай бұрын
Ara, a simple tip for applying stain to balsa wood. Use your water bottle and give your surface a good coat before you put the stain on, it is damp enough that your able to get to the wipe-off and a smoother finish. Balsa is so thirsty and I know that you will have success right away! Good luck!😊 Oh your diorama is phenomenal! Truly breathtaking!!!

Something that I've been seeing other crafters do is use a silicone ice tray or pop toy as paint wells. If anything dries, it peels right out for easy and fast clean up. It's reusable and can usually be found at a dollar store or second hand. It might be useful for some of your mini painting where you only need a little bit of paint.

Welcome to my world! I generally work 1/87 to 1/700. You need to scale way down from your normal doll house scale. Colors and washes etc have to be scaled back for a subtle more realistic look. Sometimes it's better if your first colors are more like washes and then your actual washes are more thinned out. Instead of one wash you may do six to get the effect in small scale. But like every thing else your first effort "winging it" is still pretty awesome work! Enjoying the journey!
@BentleyHouseMinis11 ай бұрын
That makes total sense when it comes to scaling down the thickness of the paint as well. Ara, I'm pretty sure thatnwood is bas/bass wood. It's much better quality than balsa! Balsa tends to be a bit of a darker color and more "gritty." I don't know how to describe it, but it doesn't really have the nice smooth texture that bass wood has. Bass wood is more like a real wood and takes stain or paint much better than balsa.

I have been using Milliput for literally years, and never saw the thing about gloves, this could be laziness (I usually use it to modify model horses and I haven't noticed many of them wearing gloves either lol) or my bad, and getting worse, eyesight. I don't even attempt to read small print these days, so unless there's a very big visible warning, I wouldn't know. I have never had irritation or other issues but, don't do as I do, as allergies vary hugely from person to person. If it says "wear gloves" wear them like Ara. Glad the Monopoly buildings came in handy for the practice run on the Beetle Juice attic diorama. It turned out well. I might suggest using fine "ground foam" for grass and weeds instead of the coarser material supplied in the kit for such a tiny scale. Great video! So informative and inspiring, as always. One of your comments in the video made me wonder what kind / brand of paint you like to use in your projects (I use DecoArt, but would love to upgrade if you recommend). Also, I notice that you sometimes paint pieces or details after you put an item or object in place, like the little houses on the table in this video. I wondered what the benefit is of painting them after they're glued down--I'd be too afraid I'd mess up the paint, so I usually paint stuff before gluing anything down! Anyway, thanks for your channel! It's a treat!

Corkbord is often used as scail sidewalk becouse of how a thick later of paint (or thin layer of plaster) overtop of it crackes is a realistic way.

Oh great tip! Thank you!

I've seen it used for making bricks like the same way egg cartons are, or stone. Maybe wood planks

Ive also seen it used for roadways as "asphalt" for when they want to make pot holes and such because once it's torn and painted, the texture of it looks like tiny pebbles.

It looks great! Perfect teaser for the actual table. I recently rewatched your video on scale and I was wondering, what scale do you think Adam worked in?
@BentleyHouseMinis11 ай бұрын
Ooh such a good question! I know he works in a train scale but I don't know much about them. Hopefully someone else who works in that smaller scale sees your question and can help estimate!

@@BentleyHouseMinis I was thinking train scale also. Regardless, I love the project of working in mini-miniature scale the way you did with the ships in the Captain’s Quarters. I know it’s going to come out so amazing!

I think train scale is 0 scale

There are different train scales. I think the HO scale is comparable to 1:24, but I would need to check again to verify

@@RochelleLangTrain Scale is divided into 3 groups N, O, H. My ex was into model trains.

you're suppose to sand plastic first so clays or other materials can stick to the plastic. nonetheless, I really enjoyed your unboxing and little map.
@BentleyHouseMinis11 ай бұрын
😊 Thank you!! I probably should have sanded them first, you are right! Thankfully no one should be touching them and I put a nice protective mat coat over them. Hopefully that works ;)

Please make also the house he included but not in his style but Aira style but with al the stuff you never used that is in the box. You can do also own stuff but like only 10 extra materials , that looks like a fun video , my gues then is you make something abanded , spooky or nuts

Great idea!! I love that! I am so tempted to make it Neil's way because it looks so realistic, but it would be fun to put a totally different twist on it! Thanks Deborah!

It was definitely the smallest scale I have ever worked in before! I am amazed at those who work this small regularly! I hope you have a great holiday as well!

I am not sure what this small scale would be considered. Definitely super tiny!
