So the lich in question was Szass Tam, in traditional Faerun lore he's the ruler of Thay which is governed by his red wizards (all of which are necromancers). The villian in Honor Among Thieves was one of these red wizards. He certainly has the power to teleport across the continent with some ease. What I will say though is that he is (indirectly) the BBEG. Given that he's the one guiding the villian in this adventure and also the leader of the order that killed the wife of Chris Pine's character. So it could be that he was set up to be the recurring villian for upcoming projects.
