Hans, you are psychic! I was next to the wood stove nice and warm on this chilly morning with a cup of fresh coffee thrilled to watch your latest video! 🙂. When I was a small girl visiting my German-born grandmother we’d go for walks on old roads in the forest. We’d bring a picnic and she always looked for a place with a slope on the side of the road…if there was a high side she would always pick that side to sit on. She said that it was a habit from when she was a small child because back then people walked and rode and drove carts all on the same path and if you were going to stop, to rest or have some food or change your clothes you always stood well to the side so you would not cause any accidents….but also sitting in a high place on the sides allowed you to see who was coming down the road so you could mentally prepare for who you might meet. She said her mother (my great-grandmother) would usually hide her coin purse under a rock or a root first thing while they were stopped so in case robbers might show up suddenly at least they might not find her coins if they searched her. She also would keep a decoy purse on her person with a few pennies in it, that way she could give them the decoy purse if necessary. You never knew who you might meet on the track-ways so caution was just part of how one travelled, especially if you were on foot or just dismounted from your horse. The tiny thimble must have been in a child’s pocket and slipped out….what a sweet find.

It is raining here in England. It seems to have rained since November. As I opened your video, I heard the rain from your detectoring adventure. It was a nice parallelism. A cup of tea, a biscuit, and Hans smoothly talking through finding coins that are half a millennium old. 25 generations have come and gone since they fell from someone's purse. What an amazing path it is that you explore. I enjoyed my 20 minutes with you. PS have you seen the TV show 'The Detectorists'? Hans. A sweet story of friendship through metal detecting. Thank you.

Greetings, Hans. I just came across your video. I live near an old stagecoach road, and the area had an 1800s homestead. I went out looking for artifacts and found old bottles among other items. I didn't have a metal detector, and I have entertained the idea of getting one. Your video has pushed me closer to metal detecting. Your finds are really nice. The 1629 coin you found is super nice. Good day Hans. You asked why so many good finds were "on the slope" along the pathway. In the U.S., we might call that the "bank" or the "berm" along the path. Anyway, I lived in Germany and The Netherlands for 11 years as a Soldier and I hiked a lot. The easiest place to sit comfortably when following a holleweg on the bank and I often lay back to rest after enjoying a snack or drink.

I can remember Needle point and young ladies taking it with them on trips and picnics. It was a really big deal and I can recall seeing their 'Test' pieces displayed in frames hanging proudly on the wall. Often they were Bible excerpts and beautifully decorated. Sometimes hand made lace pieces as well. When I was teaching we had an older lady join our staff and she did needle point. I was amazed at how the young people boys and girls, wanted to learn about it and practice. Made for some wonderful quiet times for everyone. The silver coins were both beauties.

Greetings from Czechia. I have a similar expiriences with nice finds on slopes of old paths. I explaining this to myself as that: When there was no paths people just walking on level ground, as times go by due the fact that ground tends to be soft,after hundrets of years of constant using as a path,its start to create a coridor. Overusing a path makes path scarved into ground and it also means that the oldest finds tends to be on its sides instead on the sole bottom.
@knutblume9078 ай бұрын
I heard that the farmers drove their cattle over the holloways and walked off the sides at the top because the ground became muddy because of the cows. Also the weight of the herds deepened the path. This results in finds on the sides. I assume you also take breaks along the way and lose something from your pockets while sitting or laying down. In addition, the tree roots sometimes push something old up. The trees also grow next to the path.
@19Trueman8 ай бұрын
@@knutblume907 This may be the case why are finds on the sides more often than expected. I allways wonder how long does it takes for ground on hill to move for significant lenght.
