Well i litteraly don't even specialise in sculpting and i only do it for art class when we have it like twice a year but i do know that you should always sculpt from one ball of clay and not bits cause it'll break, you should knead clay before you use it becouse it's too stiff (also use water for that) and for smoothing you should drag the clay around a bit and them dip your finger in water and smooth it, this is common knowledge lol

If you end up using clay again, I have a tip for putting pieces together! before you use slip (the water and clay mixture) you need to carve little cross hatches into the sides you're putting together first. That way the slip can fill those gaps and it can stick together and stay together! Hope this helps! :)

some tips for anyone that wants to do this - if you want it to be smooth you can either use a bit of water or just sand the finished product - if you want to stick 2 pieces together score a Crisscross pattern on both pieces where you want it to attach and add a bit of water to each side and slap em' together - you can use other things like tin foil as a base so you don't end up wasting clay and you save money - you can use metal wire as well to create the shape and keep your clay straight so it doesn't fall over - use thin metal wire to cut chunks of clay (I'm not in any means a good or a professional artist so hopefully, this is actually useful lol :D )

if you want to do another clay project, i recommend that you use skewers to hold up the pieces. like with the leaf-balls and the root pieces. i also would recommend you use tinfoil inside large pieces for structure. for example on the leaf-balls, you could create a ball of tinfoil and just wrap the clay around it. this would make the entire thing a lot lighter. :) thank you for your time

Frederic, next time you work with clay, I highly advise to use a canvas sheet or old towel to cover the surface of your workspace so you don't spend another hour scraping dried clay bits off your desk. Also, if you scrape the edges (scoring) of your piece, you can attach the pieces together and use the water to blend it. Also, use a damp sponge to smooth everything over.

Some more little tips because I’ve worked with clay and honey you did great but you deserve to be more prepared should you do this again: -To attach things, scratch and attach. Make a crisscross on both of the places you want to be attached, apply some water (works for air-dry too!) and then smooth it out. This scratching will ensure they stay and when you bake the clay, it doesn’t just... fall off. -To smooth things, I recommend using some water and either your fingers or a paintbrush! It makes the attachments very seamless and noice. -If you’re working with actual clay, make said clay hollow. Make a little hole so it doesn’t fucking explode in the oven. This will also help you not waste clay, and a huge ass chunk is not only heavy but takes so much longer to bake. Plus, any little holes you didn’t get out.. will expand and fucking explode. Hope this helps? Happy crossing idiots! 💕

the paste you made is called slip, you're supposed to make it by wetting the surface of bone dry clay (meaning the clay has to be entirely dry, and solid, clay flakes work too) and it makes a soft pudding like consistency of paste that you can easily transfer. If you use partially dry clay, then it will create a paste that is chunky or just has a lot of small stiff areas among the smooth paste mixture. Also, a way to smooth out an area is to scratch small lines across the creases, then add a tiny bit of water to your finger and blend it out. This is just one technique. im sure there are others, much love Frederic!!

If you plan on using clay again, I recommend using a metal and tinfoil skeleton so it prevents your sculpture from collapsing and you use less clay so you get more out of a huge tub.

If you don't want the clay to stick to the table when flattening I recommend using parchment paper.

You can stop the cracks with putting glue all over it after your done shaping. We used to do it like that in art class.
