The gear ratio of one pair of gears is 1:5, and 5x5x5 is 125, so the ratio is 1:125. It looked like you were spinning it at about 2 times a second at top speed, or 120 rpm, so the speed on the propeller is about 15,000 rpm, or 250 rotations per second!

I work at an aviation museum and something a lot of people don’t understand is that a 4 bladed propeller actually has more drag than a 3 bladed propeller so the thrust benefit is outweighed by the drag unless you have it going at very high rpm.
@LachlanHoran-xw7qz3 ай бұрын
2:02 the gear speed is 18 times faster than rotating the handle
@RC.Bricks3 ай бұрын
I disagree because 5x5x5 is 125, meaning it would be 125 times faster, but if I’m wrong let me know.
@LachlanHoran-xw7qz3 ай бұрын
@@RC.Bricks I remember hearing early in the video he said 6 times faster
@RC.Bricks3 ай бұрын
@@LachlanHoran-xw7qz if he did it would be 216 times faster, for gear ratios it would be 6x6x6 not 6x3, it’s a little complicated, and 40/8 is 5 so it is 1:5, I think

Regarding the rather large prop, you could fix the skipping problem by adding one or two more 24 tooth gears on top of the first one. This should allow it to raise the axel out of the bar while still being powered, and then actually fly.

if you use 2 gears on top of each other and another set of gears stacked it gives it more Tork solving your problem pf harder to crank.

The issue you're facing is that the lift you're getting is causing the gears to keep disengaging, so the propeller slows down, losing lift and dropping the propeller back down onto the gears. you need a way of rotating the propeller's axle that doesn't disengage from the gear train while still allowing the propeller to gain height.
@kittengoddess42593 ай бұрын
3:50 when you slow it down you can see that the turning motion also jerked the propeller end up and it looks like it knocked it into the air instead of it getting lift… I think a future video where the launcher is stationary or locked down would be a better test

Makes me remember about the toys back then where you had a spiraled stick and a propeller you would push the propeller as strong as you can and it always flew hella high pretty nostalgic

I did the same with 2 buggy motors and in a specific configuration the propellers managed to hit the ceiling of the room. If the gear ratio gets too high it wont work properly due to limited motor power and friction

100% you definently need to give yourself a longer handle and a bigger crank just to hold it way more firm instead of pinching two plates together while rotating a single lego peice with no handle that could definently help alone

My little guess is that what you want isn’t light weight, but low efficiency. It sounds contradictory to normal logic, but hear me out; the propeller needs to build up some speed to actually fly up when taking off, and if it’s too efficient, it’ll flop out before having had enough time to get that momentum going. Plus, more mass = more innertia = slower descelleration = longer flight time (hopefully).
