Although I agree with you on the fact most people that say they do probably don't. My family on my mom's side is Native American going back as far as I know to my great great grandma being full blood. Just to say I am adopted but named after my great uncle Joseph who was also full blood mostly because I guess like him I have a mean streak. My point is that if you talk to any of my mom's side of the family they will not admit to being Native American. Now I'm over 50 so people need to be understanding about the times they lived in. Now it may be all cool to say that but back then you said anything but. Even back in the 1940s it was better to say you were German than Native American according to my grandparents. I want to weigh in on the DNA story. Full disclosure: I have very little knowledge of my own heritage. I'm a mutt and would like to do DNA at some point. DNA technology is still evolving, and the database is still growing. I've seen KZbinrs whose results have changed. Also, we inherit 50% from each biological parent. Siblings can have different results because they didn't inherit quite the same DNA. Also, chimeras have 2 different sets of DNA. At least one mother lost her children because the DNA didn't match, even though she had witnesses to the births. They finally figured it out. Point is, DNA is complicated. It's not as simple as 2 blue eyed people can't have a brown eyed baby. I'm not weighing in on the myth about Native American heritage so many families have. But DNA can't really tell you everything about your ancestry, only what DNA was passed down. Edit: typo.
@vasyabrave28324 жыл бұрын
That is very true. If you just look between my siblings and I, you can physically see genetics are weird. My sister looks like my mom's side (dark hair, dark eyes, permanent tan colored skin) and I take after my father's side (red hair, blue eyes, so white we glow in the dark). Mom started dying her hair dark brown with a red shade into it instead of her original dark brown because she was tired of people asking if I was adopted when she was out with me and my sister.

Never done the geneaology since it's too expensive, but we know it's there. Given the area, we're guessing Apache but we have no way of knowing without spending money. Grandmother looks native and most people thought she was adopted as a kid since her father is white and so is her stepmom, but most people didn't know her stepmom wasn't her biomom. We have one (1) single picture of a great-great-some grandmother (strong native features) and her white husband. Of course, neither of them looked happy but I suppose that was normal for photos of the time. I always wondered if she ever wanted to be a part of this family, though, or be responsible for carrying it's lineage to what it is today. The blood is so heavily diluted now, though, that it's basically not worth mentioning unless people ask about my grandmother or uncle, who is often mistaken for being latino. The only parts left of it in me is the structure of my face and maybe yellow undertones to my skin, but we're basically just regular old white people these days. It's cool and all but nothing more than that. Probably couldn't even get me a scholarship tbh and it'd feel cheap to do so since we're very disconnected from that culture and couldn't even confirm which specific tribe we'd be from.

According to my dad, both of his parents were part Cherokee. An older half-sibling whose mother was his high school sweetheart said it was well known in their hometown. A full sister was reading up about fingerprints and checked mine. She said my fingers were typical European patterns, but my thumb was Native American. I thought that was cool.

Mark, I'm not an expert of UK history, but I remember reading about a few Native Americans coming to the UK during the first few years of the colonization process and about an handful of them ending up settling down and marrying in the British isles. The article I read was specifically about modern days UK citizens doing an ancestry test and wondering at why they had a tiny native American ancestry in their results. The history of these few natives settling in the UK was rediscovered specifically after their supposed descendants investigated the matter.

For the Native American story I am a half native. Dad's full blood and grandfather, aunt and both uncles. Except I have a white mother who is descended from English and Scottish heritage. Guess what ?! I look very white with dark hair. Always had a problem with it since people like to dismiss it but then my father shows and then they shut up!!

It's so ridiculous how much emphasis people put on skin colour. Like the intergenerational trauma of colonisation just goes away because of a little difference in melanin.

Not sure in other countries, but in the US, a healthcare professional can break HIPAA when information comes to light that demonstrates a crime has been committed that harms another person (not property), or if information comes to light that contributes to an ongoing investigation, such as for child endangerment. So, HIPAA can be broken IF a patient reveals information that a child is in danger or a person was harmed by the patient, but only to the appropriate authorities. Otherwise, any information regarding a patient must be vague and protect the patient's identity.

Story 3: US citizen here. My family too does the "we have Native American blood in our line" story! Any story told by mouth is not very reliable; however, DNA can also be tricksy. Just as plant DNA, two seeds from the same fruit can have different traits, so does human DNA. So, on my mother's side, my grandmother was Hispanic, and my grandfather was "Irish." One of my mother's favorite quotes was from the movie "Shining Through": "I forgot to tell you: My other half's Irish." Of course, brown eyes and dark hair are usually a more likely chance to be passed on, so even though my grandpa was seen as white with blue eyes, my mother looks Hispanic; dark hair, eyes, and complexion, but when she recently took a DNA kit, she discovered she had a lot of Spanish and Native American genes....and a tiny bit of European. (I'm quoting as best as I can from memory.) My sister is pretty much a carbon copy of my mother physically (one of my mother's cousins confused my sister for her). On my dad's side, we know the family immigrated from Sweden in the late 1700's (we have an old signed and dated Swedish Bible, as well as some other documents), and again the persistent family rumor that there is some Native American in our family, but that "it was considered a huge family secret because of the way Native Americans were looked at back then." My dad has ash blonde hair and hazel eyes. His mother had dark hair and brown eyes, and I think her husband also had dark hair and eyes, although he died before I was born and I never met him. Then I came along: when I was little, I had white-blonde hair, blue eyes, and ghost-pale skin. I can't tell you how many times people assume I'm adopted, and my coloring is completely different from my sister's, even though we share some physical traits like nose (my dad's) and smile and voice, mannerisms etc. I haven't taken a DNA test, but my parents are pretty sure that my DNA would show more of the Swedish side, hence my coloring, while my sister's might show more like my mom's. Who knows. 🤷♀️ Genetics are weird lol. Story 4: I've had three C-sections, and ripped my stitches out on the second one because I tried to do everything myself after two weeks. Trust me: You *do not* want to do what I did. Tell your husband either he compromises for this year, OR he does all the work himself, but you will be resting as per doctor's orders, and therefore leaving the work, and the childcare, on him. (I also got a giggle on Alert Potato's name, and the "yoinking a baby out" comment.)

It never ceases to amaze me how many people out there judge other people for not "taking responsibility" of another adults actions when they know DAMN WELL that they would not feed, house or help the person themselves. They are just trying to take the attention off themselves so nobody will notice and ask them why they themselves aren't willing to take the person in or give them the money or whatever it is they are asking for.

I want that music waffle hoodie SO BAD. It's so cute! Gonna wait until January... And don't worry about prices, they are out of your control mostly, materials, printing etc is an expensive process and you can't really risk buying a whole bunch in advance like a store, because expensive and you could end up not being able to sell 'em all, so on demand printing is the best option really.

My dad, bless his soul, had a cousin who did a family genealogy tree. Many of my cousins on his side of the family would say that we have native blood because of my dad's mom. The tree showed that our family tree goes back to a Sicilian named Jon di Carbon who was adopted by a family that lived there. No one know who his parents are. He then migrated to Canada in Québec or Montreal and married a Canadian woman. In our genealogy, there is no mention of native in it. I am a whop French Canadian. I don't speak Italian at all but am bilingual in French and English. This is about story 3.

I’m “ full blooded” Native American but I’m sure if I took a test I’d only be about 90% or more. I’m Mohawk and Oneida and obviously knew because I grew up on a reservation my whole life. I think it’s crazy people would claim to have our heritage not even knowing for sure, I know many people will pretend to be native to try and get scholarships/ benefits.

Regarding the Christmas tree, I totally empathize. For 25+ years I single-handedly put together a 7 1/2 foot artificial tree, put the lights on it, and decorated it. Then I would take everything apart and pack it all away for another year. If OP's husband wants a tree, let him do all the work for a change.

Story 2 abt the HIPPA violation. My pos nephew told family about my husband's dire health condition and said that I'd soon be a wealthy widow. Had people claiming to be relatives demanding $ since they're FAMILY. I was shot for refusing and nearly died. Hubby and I are fine now. BTW no idea how anyone thought that we're rich. I remember in elementary school (I'm a 90's baby) it was SO popular to claim to have Native American heritage and Irish heritage. My family always said we had Native American blood but seeing as my family is super white I figured it was probably not true. Well, my grannies (mom's mom and dad's mom) were big into genealogy. They both spent about 30 years each researching our family tree. Turns out my great great grandmother on my dad's side was from the Black Foot tribe. While that's far enough back in lineage that I don't think it really matters, I was surprised it turned out to be true.

Worked at an embroidery and print shop a while ago, and boy you have to be careful with the heat press for the shirts and the machines are no joke. A coworker had her thumb completely pierced through by the needle. Just heard the machine make a sound that wasnt normal before it was shut off and her going "Oh darn" or something like that, memory slightly hazy, for sure she was fairly calm and more annoyed with herself then stressed. Just a hazard of the job, happened at least I believe twice in the 3 years I was there but the other time was before I got in for the day. Miss the sounds of those machines as loud as they actually were it was a nice background sound.

Dad did a dna test and found out the person in our family who had native blood wasn't even his dad 😅 I was almost 100% certain I have no native blood because I'm about a white as snow with very thick curly brown hair. I'm mostly Irish I know with some German and European. Wanna do a DNA test to find out how much of everything
