Really interesting! I often feel a bit unhappy with current sidechain methods. I really liked the method you posted in your template that added a bit of lookahead via the timeshift. Going to give this one a shot. Will buy you a coffee if it works out! Good stuff as always.

@@TildeSounds I'm with you on that! I'm always on the lookout for a better way. Bitwig seems to have opened up some pretty cool possibilities.

Cool stuff! Next level modular patching, didn’t know you could go that deep with Bitwig Just wanted to add that sidechain is used for a lot of stuff, not just ”sidechain ducking” :)

@@cyberspacer yesyes ofc, its just a shorthand people will easily understand and that doesnt take up too much space visually. I knew someone would point it out hahaha. The grid goes pretty deep, especially in time domain fx.

@@TildeSounds haha yes I get it, it wasn't like I didn't get it, just wanted to be a smart ass, sorry ;D I Evaluated Ableton against Bigwig a while back since getting back into music. Went with Ableton, but if the wallet allows it further on, I think I "need" to get Bigwig as well :)

I switched over from ableton, the great thing is that a lot of knowledge from it will carry over quite easily. Can even import ableton project files hehe

I like this quite a bit. I'm not a fan of the overuse of PUMPING EDM sidechain, but I do like sidechain when it is used almost in a multiband context to carve out more space during the busiest moments of the mix. Too much of this "multiband sidechaining" is cork-sniffing, but I'm excited to see another option to add to the arsenal. I'm pretty new to the grid so it will probably take a while, more experience, and views for all of this to sync in.

Really cool idea, looks nice and clean, although I feel like both the fade-in and fade-out look really quite long in the oscilloscope. I really want to get into the grid, but I lack the ideas for what it is I'd want to do haha
@TildeSounds
@TildeSounds Ай бұрын
The fade in is somewhat long yeah, altho you gotta consider this is a very short kick. 20 ms are still well within audio rate, which starts at 50. The fade out is mostly dont by ear, you can make it as short as you want. Imo a good thing to start with is to just use the grid as a synth

how is this different from the audio sidechain modulator (which can follow the signal very closely)?
@TildeSounds
@TildeSounds Ай бұрын
it's all about processing the rectified signal to smooth it out/fill in the gaps in a way that doesn't sacrifice too much precision
@PolarityMusic
@PolarityMusic Ай бұрын
@@TildeSounds that's why im asking, bc the audio sidechain can follow the signal "very" closely, so close it's even audio rate modulation if you pull the decay all the way down. and as you figured out in the first part of the video thats giving you loads of distortion, so you implemented an envelope follower to smooth the signal. and imo, you get all that for free with the audio sidechain, no? and both solutions need a slight timeshift to counter the smoothing. will ja kein korinthenkacker sein 😅 macht doch was ihr wollt.

@@PolarityMusic audio sidechain seems to be a kind of slew limiter, this is a peak hold. plus it does lookahead, audio sidechain doesn't. as i say in the video, if you don't care that's fair enough, i'm not trying to sell anything here.
@OMG-KMB
@OMG-KMB Ай бұрын
Hey Polarity, could you do a video where you test out both the options and share your findings with blind A/B-ing? Also, do you guys think it would be a great feature request to be able to connect an oscillo/spectroscope to the grid window in the devices tab? It would be sick visibility no?
@TildeSounds
@TildeSounds Ай бұрын
@@OMG-KMB should be easy enough to test yourself i reckon, just use an fx selector and close your eyes and hit the switch a few times. with subtle stuff like this thats always a good idea.
