I would say from years of working at JoAnn Fabrics and learning very young to sew from my Mother, Chiffon is usually pretty smooth as a fabric. Georgette is a textured fabric that is a cousin to Chiffon. So you may have Georgette there. It's pronounced george -Jet and comes from the French, just like chiffon does. Happy sewing. Exciting that you are making your wedding gown.
@MadameMyriad2 ай бұрын
Yea that sounds right, it probably was a georgette 😅 I got it from a deadstock site that labelled it as chiffon so I just kept calling it that
@emilyrln2 ай бұрын
A note of the pronunciation: the final GE of George and the J of Jet are the same sound in the word. As if Shore-jet started with a J instead of a SH.

For future bodices,you could stitch the boning to the lining a short distance away from the seam, then stitch in the ditch to connect the lining to the top fabric, either by machine or hand. You could also tack them together by hand,possibly even with the boning stitched directly over the seams, although it might be hard to manipulate the needle against the boning.

I’ve seen people use techniques like that before! I definitely have not unlocked that skill level yet, nothing but respect to those who can pull that off 🫡

Well done for being so brave to make your own wedding dress and it looked so lovely. As a trained dress maker there were a few cringey moments. I wish I could help you, but here are some suggestions 😊. useful tips. Measure the hem from the ground (pref with shoes on) because the shape of the body usally makes the back higher than the front. Put pins in with the point away from your direction of sewing so you can get them out easier. Follow pattern instructions, it teaches you how to do things. Place pattern pieces on the straight of grain. I wish you the very best in your sewing and hope my tips will be helpful. Nx
@emilyrln2 ай бұрын
Question: what are your thoughts on putting pins perpendicular to the direction of sewing? I find they're easiest to pull out from that direction. Then again, I also tend to run over them with abandon and don't change my needle regularly, which has led to issues 😅
@jlcbb1973Ай бұрын
Same thoughts occurred to me. Cutting the circle of the skirt too - not the best way of doing it. The centre point isn't firm. Also no pressing of seams as you go. Soft fabric like she used doesn't flatten nicely without it. Seams are 'bumpy'.

This is gorgeous! I completely agree with you with regards to seeing the boning channels on the outside of the bodice. Could you sew it as normal with the channels and then hand sew or machine sew the lace over it to hide the channels while still having a fitted bodice? I have seen designers on the various shows and in documentaries that applique the lace or other fabric or beaded bits to a garment/dress. Whatever you do it will be a beautiful dress.
@MadameMyriad2 ай бұрын
Thank you 🖤 & yea, appliqué and lace is a great way to hide that kind of stuff, I did that with the back to hide the fastening stitching. For this particular design I didn’t want to cover the entire bodice with lace (and the boning went all the way round) so I had to put in the extra effort to hide the boning channels. Literally another project and I would have let the stitching show or cover it in a bunch of lace like you said 😂

15:32 I do this as a one-step process using parchment paper (I think you in the UK call it "greaseproof paper"?) to trace and use as my final pattern, it's really quite strong for pinning, etc. The only thing I realized about using parchment is that the commercial grade WILL take tape for piecing, but the parchment paper on a roll from the grocery store is too non-stick and tape won't stick to it.

Well wanting a haunted dress, no wonder the zip was hidden from you. I know this is way too late to help, and I don’t know if this is available in your country, but Pellon 830 Easy Pattern is great to trace patterns through. It’s not transparent, but it’s translucent and sturdy enough to use as a pattern when you copy from your original pattern. I can easily use a permanent pen to trace the size I want. No slippery plastic, and it saves you one step. Another help with silk is to loosen the presser foot tension. That with leaving the pins in helps. Your dress turned out beautifully! I made my dress, my husband’s outfit, seven bridesmaids dresses, seven groomsman outfits, five children’s outfits, my mother’s dress, and my father’s jacket in two weeks. We got married at a castle and did a rennasensesque theme. The men had blue velvet coats with silver trim and blue and silver brocade vests. My husband had the same but blue and gold. The bridesmaids dresses were all different and in blue and silver but they all had a blue chiffon drape from the back shoulders to the floor. My father’s jacket was black with gold trim and my mother’s dress was dark green and gold. I had one junior bridesmaid in blue and silver and my son had an outfit matching my husband. There were two toddler boys in ivory silk knickers, and vests. My two flower girls had ivory and gold star fluffy dresses with wings. I wore my grandmother’s 1940’s ivory silk dress and made an overdress in gold brocade based on one Queen Elizabeth 1 wore with long draped sleeves and a full train with a cathedral length veil. I think you did a great job and understand how hard the undertaking was. I must add that I’m a costume designer, seamstress, and heirloom wedding creator. Still, doing your own wedding is very stressful, but it is rewarding seeing the end result. I love your dress and love that shared it with us.

I’ve already seen it! I follow you on instagram! You’re half the reason it was already in my head 😂 You did an amazing job! It looks gorgeous 🖤🖤 and I was so impressed you managed to make it from thrifted and deadstock fabrics too. (I’m also loving the Mary Poppins dress you’re working on now 😍)

I watched in awe as you just cut out your material how you wanted it without a pattern just confident that it will fit. I would be terrified of ruining the fabric and wasting the money 😢 I absolutely hate drawing around a pattern to cut out I would rather buy or download a new one. 🤗lazy I know.
@MadameMyriadАй бұрын
Less confident it would fit, more incredibly flexible on how it turned out 😂 & I usually buy deadstock fabric so it never really costs that much which further fuels my recklessness, I think the only time I bought something expensive was the coutil for my Edwardian corset and I was panicking when I made that 😅

Congratulations on the dress, wedding and husband. How comfy were the shoes to walk in? I have my eye on some memery shoes too, hence the questions.
@MadameMyriad2 ай бұрын
Thank you 🖤 Honestly, when I first put them on, they were the comfiest shoe I had ever worn, it was like putting my foot in a pillow! We did walk to our venue instead of driving and after about 40 minutes of walking, the boots rubbed the top of my toes a little but honestly I think I just needed to wear some thicker socks with them (I’m used to living in trainers), I would still 10/10 recommend the brand and I’m definitely going to be wearing mine for the rest of my life now

I always trace my patterns for similar reasons. I get this fancy schmancy tracing paper that comes on a roll and doubles as your pattern after. Not cheap though

Might treat myself to a fancy schmancy tracing paper one day 😄 until then it’s cheap packaging paper for me
@margauxt740Ай бұрын
What about a tracing paper instead of the plastic you used? It saves one step and time, it is more accurate
@MadameMyriadАй бұрын
It’s just more expensive, I bought the packaging paper years ago and I’m determined to use it all 😄

I would have taken the time to hem the dress. You can use smaller stitches to counter the "slippery" fabric. Great job !

I recently used the ruffler foot on my vintage Singer for the first time, and if you're willing to do some testing and a little bit of maths, it's a game changer!

@@MadameMyriad My two Top Tips: 1. Playing around with the stitch length is your friend 2. Although it's unstable if you put it through without a backing fabric, it's usable and basically becomes gathers on easy mode, and still adjustable

seriously xD i feel that stuff dissapearing for no fking reason just happened to me yesterday and this morning with the jewelry im wearing every day but now half of it is gone and i have no idea where it went like damn....and u did greath with gathering! a few months ago i actually croched! a huuuge full vampirish cloak and had to connect the upper and lower part which the latter was gathered with yarn as well xD that was quite a challenge and this thing in its entirety is so damn heavy xD but hey was worth it in the end!
@MadameMyriad2 ай бұрын
This is the point where our ancestors would blame the fairies, from now on this is my reasoning when things disappear 😄 I can’t even imagine trying to gather yarn 😅 The vampire cloak sounds very cool though! 🖤

Why a whiteboard marker in particular? So you can wipe the plastic clean and re-use? Or were you transferring the marker ink from the plastic to the brown pattern paper by smudging?
@MadameMyriad2 ай бұрын
Both, I’ve been using the same pieces of plastic since I started my channel 😄
