I made paper cartridges for my 1860 Army revolver!

The colt 1860 Army really is an excellent pistol platform. The paper cartridges make shooting the old war horse much better. When loaded with such ammo, its comoarable to modern day cartridges like the 44 special.

The first shot with the home made cap would have likely fired if you use nitrated paper to make your cartridges. It’s super easy to nitrate paper and there are quite a few videos on KZbin showing how to do it… super simple and easy!

Try using Johnston & Dow or the Kerr bullet. Youmay need to open up the area around the loading port.See Duelist1954 videos

I have the kit and it is good but for my 1860 I resorted to a much easier method that also has the advantage of having a lubed felt wad. the key is pyrodex pellets. they only make em in 30 grain in the 44/45 caliber. Nothing for 36 or 31... and they are a bit more in price than loose powder but... I can use a zig zag 1.5 paper and roll the pellet with a wad on top and then the ball all together with a glued (elmers stick goes on purple dries clear) edge I then twist the excess on each end and since there is probly glue... cut off the excess. The GOTW kits work great and I use them and he is very responsive to any questions. I use the 36 caliber one a lot. with any paper circular base kit/method like that there is some learning curve and.... they do take a bit of time to make. and of course they do not allow a wonder wad or lubed wad to be incorporated. on my 31 and 36 I can simply dip the ball end in lube or lube above the loaded round but that of course is yet another step. Using the pellet method probly cuts the time to where you can make 3 or 4 of em in the same time as with the kit. and... IF you are a lubed wad kinda guy? You get that with the simple pellet method. To me paper cartridges are all about shooting more. they don't really save time in the overall scheme of things but they shift the time needed from at the range to at home at your leaser. Also..you can use plastic ammo boxes with the paper rounds and have 50 or so rounds ready to go. the 31 caliber rounds were a problem in that no real boxes met my needs until I found 22lr plastic cases for sale. people loved em but said they were 'loose' for their 22 lr rounds.... Hmmmmm. took a chance and maybe loose for 22lr but perfect for 31 kit rounds!

If you dont shoot the cartridges ASAP the lube from the wad will eventually mix in with the black powder and they can end up not working right. That method is okay, but only if you're going to be shooting them right after making them which sort of defeats the purpose of having cartridges... otherwise I'd be doing the same thing

@@eaSTS9 Maybe.. I make my own wads from tallow and beeswax. I have left guns loaded with wads and loose powder for months and they still went off. I also think that that the pellets are even harder to foul. If I find it to be a problem I will just load em up a few nights before. It only takes a sec to do. I think the point is not saving time itself but saving time at the range and not worrying about wind etc. blowing stuff around?

I make my own percussion caps from a kit that I saw in the internet. They work okay. I make him out of aluminum coat cans. Only problem is they fit kind of loose. They fall off easy. They're okay for shooting at the range and having fun, which I guess is all this gun is really good for nowadays anyways, but there's no way you could keep them on there for many length of time. Also, the aluminum just kind of splits in half when they're fired so they really gum up the lock work when they fall down in there. I also use the same kit to make 44 and 36 caliber rounds. They always seem to fire reliably. I've never had one not go off other than from bad homemade primers.

I make my own caps. I think you may be not loading enough prime all in yours, at least that one you test fired. Mine could ignite water, I swear 😜

Thanks for your video. This is something I've got to try. One question: Did you have to modify the loading port to get the cartridges to load?

Nope, no modification needed if you load round ball cartridges. There is plenty of room for round balls. But if you load conical bullets in paper cartridges, I believe you would need to modify the loading port as there wouldn’t be enough room to clear the longer bullet.

@@chadhawthorneofficial - Thank you, I have been searching for an answer to that exact question, I knew the loading port had to be modified for conical paper cartridges for the Pieta 1860 army and I am glad to learn that no modification is necessary for round ball cartridges. 👍

Your homemade primer didn't work. It looked like didn't have enough bang so either you didn't mix your powder ratios right? Or you just didn't put enough powder in the cap when you made it. It says one scoop per each cap but sometimes a lot falls out and doesn't make it in there all the way you can tell when it hardens up if you have a micrometer how far down the powder is in the primer?

Again... I have to say that Dustin is very responsive and mail times are quick. as far as going off and cigarettes' paper being a problem? LOL guys are using coffee filter paper or silk or who knows? and they have no problems. the cig paper is the thinnest of all of them.

BP cylinder…. You’d use metallic cartridges in a conversion cylinder. Haven’t tried that yet.
