I Made Paper From Pineapples (and Other Weird Materials)

This DIY handmade paper process is so fun and satisfying! In this previous video I did this: • I Turned Trash into Pa... so the obvious next step was to see what other materials I could experiment with!
I tried making paper from pineapple tops, celery, leaves and junk mail. The results were failure, some surprising successes, and an unexpected project using the celery paper. 10/10 recommend making your own paper!

For the celery, cut it into longer pieces and don’t use the blender. Long fibers are generally preferable. To get the non-fiber stuff out, try hitting it with a stick and rinse several times. Put more fiber in your water for thicker sheets. It looked pretty strong, though, and it looked cool. Many keep it thin with longer fibers. In some traditions that really thin paper is desirable.

You can take the DIY paper and tape it to the A4 page like you did, then set the print size larger than what the paper is, so it prints the edges on the A4. Then when you peel it the entire DIY paper would be printed on and have these nice "live edges".

I’d honestly be interested to see if you could make paper out of a wasp nest, not one that still has wasps in it though obviously! :D But like just taking an old and abandoned nest and using that for paper making might be pretty cool, I’m mean they’re technically already made out of a type of paper the wasps make anyways so it should be pretty straight forward! :P

when making the paper, next time, slide your deckle and mold in vertically on the wall farthest from you, then slide the bottom along the bottom of the tub, slowly turning it horizontal. this will allow more pulp to land on the deckle and giving you thicker paper. The way you are doing it now, you are causing the mesh to push all the pulp down and away from your mold.

I remember both, ants and bugs on a log. My favorite is peanut butter with raisins. Here's a fun one I grew up with and still eat (stack each of the following on each other): - Toast - Peanut butter on toast - Slice of cheese on peanut butter - Applesauce on cheese - Top it off with cinnamon - Thank me later!

A couple notes from someone who studied paper science/engineering in undergrad: 1. It is better for formation if you dip the deckle in at an angle rather than straight down. Your way isn’t wrong per se, but it can result in some formation deficiencies. It’s hard to explain the angling over text as any time I’ve had to explain it I’ve had all the equipment in front of me 😅 2. Part of why your celery paper is so thin is the solids content. Ideally, your vat should be at around 1% solids. Celery is already very very low solids (about 2.5% of the mass is the carbohydrates that we want for papermaking from a cursory google search), so you likely diluted it way too much when you mixed up the vat. 3. Handwriting on handmade paper is hard, particularly with our modern writing utensils. Modern writing implements are made with a pronounced point, because our writing papers are made to be relatively strong, but a lot of the things they do to make them strong you don’t have as much access to (in particular, the additives). 4. You are *extremely* brave to put handmade paper through a standard printer. I’m surprised they didn’t all jam tbh but that’s a testament to your skill. 5. YOUR LAMP IDEA WAS SO COOL. All in all an awesome video for me to stumble on and I hope to see some more paper shenanigans from you in the future :P
