Recommendation for the next time you only have two options and you're rolling dice instead of continually re-rolling to try and get a one or a two consider one as anything odd and two as anything even so no matter what you get one through six you only have to roll once

I havent gotten to the sewing part yet but I have a lot of thoughts on your statistical methods 😂 1) you dont play dnd? I am suprised 2) if two options you can just do odds and evens 3) when rolling two dice together the distribution curve is not even. Theres a higher chance of the numbers in the middle because there are multiple combinations that will give you that result. Hence the need for those multisided die in dnd. Given you probably put the simplest options first on each list, this bias will have made your life much harder

Lacking shiny math rocks, there are some great random number generator apps out there. Maybe even better than the fancy dice, tbh, because you can easily set it to give you random numbers in any range, rather than worrying about whether you have 17 options and a d20.

For the arm movement issue: One thing to note about the dolman sleeves is that the angle they come out of the body part will impact mobility. Charlie angled the sleeves down a lot (like a 1) which will limit movement more than if the sleeves went out at a right angle to the bodice (more like a T). The T shape will need wider fabric and will create a bit of a fold in the armpit when the arms are down, but it is an option.

I think this could be a way to weed out choices you don't want. If you roll a choice you go "ugh" to remove it from the options and roll again. That way you discover what you want without actually making decisions. At the end you can decide if you still want to make it.

I still love this idea of randomly picking by dice and I think it would work wonderfully if you could make a flowchart with the spreadsheet information! Like start with the fabric type “are you working with woven or knit” and then drop down into the fabric weight and then down into the best styles for each weight and then “will your dress have sleeves” and then drop down to the best options for that type and weight of fabric. That would be an amazing resource and could be used to still have some randomization in dress design but would aid the sewist in designing a dress that works for the fabric and weight they’re using. The nerdy librarian in me wants to make this flowchart, but I’ve never made a dress in my life and have no idea what I’m doing 🤣

honestly random selecting things is such a good thing because it eliminates the need to make a choice which can be a very hard thing to do (choice paralysis, my behated) but it also very much helps to realise what you actually dont like by forcing you to make a choice you wouldnt otherwise make but when presented with it only, you realise you dont actually like or it just does not work

Half-way through, and just got to the problem section! I have another fun way to do this challenge. 1- Random number generator so that you can just type in your number of options! 2- You could do that whole process with the goal of making 2 dresses with each selection being used at least once so there is still a random mix and match element but you can avoid the selections that are truly incompatible. I love this so much and may try to do my own with me sewing teacher.

This was so much fun! I have a few suggestions: 1. Do not start with the fabric. Make all the random rolls and match the material to the design. 2. On a second or third dress. Remove the choices used from the previous design. 3. When you have only 2 choices just roll even or odd. If you have 3 a 1 or 2 are a 1, a 3or 4 are 2, and a 5 or 6 is a 3. I really do think this was super fun. Good job.

Those dice really wanted you out of your sewing comfort zone! A bell shaped sleeve could have an elastic 'cuff' to make it extra-snug right before where the flare of the bell begins. Or, loose or flared all the way down, with an elastic cuff above the elbow so the remainder of the three-quarter length bells out. Entirely fair to decide that elements of the first dress were disqualified from the second one (except for elements you liked)! The idea behind the dice is, after all, to increase the variety of designs. I've seen special 'rolling trays' for D&D so the dice don't fall off the table - you could probably commandeer a shallow dish for the same purpose if you do this again. You don't have to re-roll until you get a 1 or 2 - you could say all the odd-numbers are 'one' and all the even numbers are 'two' for that round, or say '1, 2, and 3 are Option One, 4, 5, and 6 are Option Two.' You can divide sets of three in a similar way - 1 & 2 are 'One', 3 & 4 are 'Two', and 5 & 6 are 'Three'; or, 1 & 5 (the prime numbers) are 'One', 2 & 4 are 'Two', and 3 & 6 are 'Three'. (Or however you want to divide them, really, those just seem like the most intuitive arrangements.) The jumpsuit looks very cozy! (Probably in part *because* it looks like pajamas.) And the bright yellow is a really cheerful colour.

I never really understand when people follow through on self-made challenges even though they know the end product will go to waste- it seems so impractical! Then again, I am a boring pragmatist, so maybe the complete chaos of "not cheating" seems a little too close to "fun" to me lol

This is such a fun idea. I love anything that involves randomly choosing. That is a video I will click. I searched last night for things like "pinterest chooses my next quilt project" and "randomized quilt" It just doesn't exist. I think I can see why. Fabric is pricy, and now you should plan out your project very carefully so you know you have an end product that is useful and you love, not just waste fabric to be playing. I see a lot of randomized crochet videos, but yarn tends to be a bit less precious than fabric.

"We don't have many games in this house" said in a quest for dice is probably the first thing you've ever said that I absolutely do not relate to *at all* 🤣🤣 We have *so many games*, but the majority of the dice aren't even in those games, but rather, are for TTRPG shenanigans. Apparently, I have opinions, and if you're interested, by all means keep reading, but if not, feel free to skip the rest of my comment here 😅 My two unsolicited cents: I think both of those could be modified to be more wearable. For the heavy one, I would even out the hem (maybe add some kind of treatment like a ruffle or flounce in a lighter-weight material) and turn the sleeves into either a butterfly (also in the lighter-weight material) or just take the ruffle off and make it into more of a pinafore/overalls kind of situation. I would probably also make the waist elastic or do a fixed waistline treatment of some kind to keep the fullness of the skirt consistent and consistently where I want it (though I know that would mean putting in a dreaded zipper). For the sheer one, as far as *my* aesthetic goes, giving it some shape at the waist would go a long way. I wouldn't cinch or belt it, but instead shape the pieces to conform to the body. The godets seemed like they were placed really high, but it may have just seemed like that because of the general looseness at the waist. Since my idea would be to take it in at the waist, I would definitely use the godets to help bring back any fullness needed to go over the hip. I'd also add in more godets for better, all-around swoosh. As far as the tightness at the bust, a fun option *could* be to slash it down the center front and add lacing or maybe a contrasting panel or something along those lines. Could even do a kind of "mirrored with the back" situation, but with ties that are more like a bandeau top. Idk. I have ideas. Ymmv 🙃

The spread sheet software has fun functions like "if this preceding choise has been made, remove that option" *Kind or like a flow chart where you get different choises based on the previous ones.) I think for a woven, no waist dress with godets - I would have added a princess seam that way you can accommodate the bust line and waistline being different measurements even without adding in a waist seam, then you can add the godets in to the skirt part of that princess seam. Also, you've got the welt on the wrong part of the pocket again, the welt should be on the bottom side of the pocket so that it goes in front of your hand. And hurray! for comfy house clothes! I'm becoming increasing more comfortable with having a separate house and outside wardrobe, and having to get dressed before going to the store.

Second, the yellow dress can work as an office dress over a shirt (ruffles need to be sacrificed, a heavy loss, but life is tough) for a colder days, for example. It has potential! The sheer dress... looks nice from the distance, but the hem looks weird. The tie at the back might work better with a low front neckline, if it (tie) sits as high as possible, like if you have a regular collar, just without any fabric on your back (I assume. I don't sew). And it's a great exercise, too! I think, it might be a cool project as a line of doll clothes, or a set of sketches, with some wild colors as well.

When you drew the asymmetrical hem with the godets, my first thought was a handkerchief hem with square pieces of fabric inset at each corner for the godets. I think you'd end up with something with a super-flowy hemline like a circle skirt but with the angular hem. Maybe I'm wrong, but I kind of want to play with that now. When I saw you in this yellow dress, I immédiately remembered that gorgeous yellow see through fabric you once got in remainders. It was with leaves pattern and you bought like 11 yards of it. I am sooo waiting to see what you will make from it! Cause yellow DO look awesome on you !

It's hanging on the door of my fabric closet so I don't forget about it, but I've had like three different ideas for it so far and none of them have been so amazing that I stuck with them. Someday, someday....

I love the jammies. Randomly selected, fun in theory. I enjoyed watch you create your own. Agree the heavy woven wasn't the best for the yellow style. Thanks for sharing.

As Phil over as City Planner Plays would say, you called a mulligan on this project to save it. Totally valid action🙂

It might not work for your brain but I think some might benefit from changing the order of some of the categories. Like more skips and coordinating options. Like you just don't add slits to certain skirts, if it is already flowy enough (the godets) or typically with a asymmetrical/high-low hems, you also just don't do asymmetrical hems on floor length dresses. And the sleeve columns probably need more practical coordination. And obviously if anyone wants to use your spreadsheet they can be more selective of the design elements they will actually enjoy/ their preferences

Both the dresses look cute! Bummer first one is too tight because it is pretty. Yellow on you totally works, so do the ruffled cap sleeves. Super cute! That was definitely an interesting video.

I like the yellow dress. I want it to have a white chemise thingie under it, but I like it. It's over the top fun. It's like a daffodil through snow.

I love both the dresses!!! I think you made the correct choices. The only thing i would change is use a dark lining for the first dress.

That was fun! And I think before you give up on wearing the yellow dress, cut off the cap part of the sĺeeves! I think it would be more wearable for you. And this was fun to watch. But I think I know how frustrating it must have been, especially since you usually use knits. Thanks Charlie! Love your channel.

the blue is very cute and loos good on you. if you could do a bust augmentation somehow it would be marketable. the yellow is a great summer wear. the plaid is comfey and fits well.

When I was a grade schooler in the 80s, I was chosen to be a clown in our spring pageant. My mom sewed a jumpsuit that looked a lot like yours out of rummage sale bed sheets. She added a cone hat and a separate oversized white ruffle for the neck. That outfit may have been a lot, but I loved it so much! I would wear the jumpsuit part around the house until I grew out of it. My mom still had it in storage up until a few years ago.

I recently made a dolman style 3/4 sleeve wrap top from a woven fabric (specifically Lady Marlowe no. 8143, altered to make it a full wrap along with my fit adjustments) and it worked really well! However, it’s bias cut and the sleeves are decently roomy in the armpit area and taper in. I also reinforced the waistline with some cotton twill ribbon as a belt because bias-cut linen is surprisingly stretchy for a non-stretch woven fabric.

Ok, before I get to your final thoughts: all of them look good! The yellow one is extremely cute, but that dang jumpsuit looks like the comfiest pair of pjs ever. Much jealousy!

I honestly love that the jumpsuit did not pattern match on the front. It was off just enough that it looks intentional somehow. And you look cozy and happy in it, so do whatever. It's a good inside outfit. Not sure if wearing something on top would make it less look like a pajamas or not.

After your rolls, I now have a dress in my head that I would take advantage of all of those squares you rolled inspired by handkerchiefs... square patch pockets, of course. I can't wait to see how yours compares to what I have in my head.

That was my thought about the godets. Just use squares or diamonds with 2 adjacent sides joining with the dress body and the 2 opposite sides creating the asymmetric hem.
