The pyshics in this games are too different compared to the NES game. Basically, the momentum is non existant, you move always at the same speed and if you stop pressing left or right you stop to 0 speed instantly even midair. The hitboxes are different, Bowser jumps only last a fraction of a second, there is a horrible delay entering pipes and you have to be perfectly centered to enter in one. So no, playing this game is different than speedrunning. Is still a cursed concept and I had fun playing it, but the controlls of the NES version are a lot better than this.

It would not make sense for top speed runners to battle it out because the concept here is fastest wins. No one will pick any powerups, no one will interact with the environment because all these things slow you down. They will all attempt to run button-perfectly, and for the most part, they will all be in one spot together until someone makes a mistake and gets a few pixels back. This is not for speedrunners. It would be fun if the win condition would be to remain the only player alive or something like that.

@@restless276 When I said "or something like that", I meant all the necessary modifications to make it work, not just implement last man standing and be done with it. You don't need to remake levels or implement difficult mechanics. Once a player or _some_ players finish a level, you could introduce a short timer for the rest to complete a level. And then do some shenanigans in the last level for a single (or top 3) winners (which he already did, look at the end). But of course, having a storm is also fun. There are many ways to deal with it. I just wish interaction would be rewarded rather than penalised since THAT is the whole point of the game. Now if you interact with anything, you forfeit your chance of winning.
