Years ago I was creating a farming game with horror elements and during prototyping stages the original whang video was released, thinking that the game had essentially already been created I scrapped my game only to find out years later that the game didn't actually exist.

Lmao. I had a similar experience with the Casino RPG that I’ve shown a couple of times (Dance of Cards made it fun in a way I didn’t manage to), but that existing (or at least you thinking it existed), doesn’t mean you don’t have something special to show with your take on it. Games like Stardew or Minecraft weren’t the first to do that style of game, but they resonated with people in a way the others might not have. Would love to know what you would have done with it!

Thanks! If you search for “procreate pixel brush guide” on here you’ll find loads that all do the same thing, mine isn’t anything special. There’ll probably be plenty of choice for just downloading them too.

Good call. That’s something I haven’t thought about as I’ve made more complicated games (first one was pretty much just a 3d model you could walk around lol). I’ll put it in the next one.

With it being a game jam my code is a disgusting mess and not really that great for teaching 😅 But the general idea is that I have an array with each farming plot node in, and at the end of each day I iterate through, checking the attached scripts to see if they are watered etc, add to a growth stage number, then update the graphics. Works great for a limited number of plots like this, but for something more like Stardew Valley where you can place them anywhere, you'd just want to be managing that array more instead of it being static!

What software are you using for the 3d/pixel art? It looks neat.

The 3d stuff is all in Crocotile3d, really good for getting the pixel perfect look. For the character sprites and stuff I was using Procreate on the iPad with a pixel brush! I also used PhotoPea (basically a free web based PhotoShop clone) for some extra processing/aligning sprite sheets at the end.
