Trapped air does not create kiln bombs, it's trapped water

the reasoning for your highschool art teacher telling you that pieces need to be hollow or they'll explode is because clay will dry quicker when it is hollowed. If you made two identical pieces except one was hollow and the other not, the one that is hollow will dry quicker, and the one that is not hollow might possibly still have trapped water inside, which could create the explosion

It’s annoying they tell us it’ll explode if it doesn’t have a hole rather than explain it’ll take too long to dry. everyone in the comments of every ceramicist is like “it’ll explode!!!?!” If there isn’t a whole new but if our teachers actually *taught* us, we wouldn’t be so concerned about the imaginary air explosion problem

Clay is not dry until it is half way through bisque firing, so super thick walls require a very slow bisque firing to allow all the steam to escape.

Fun fact, if your clay sculpture is hollow then you have to wait for a few days or so to get put in the kiln because if it’s hollow and it’s not dry, it can explode I Might get some words spelt wrong

from my limited understanding, most potters try not to put anything thicker than an inch into the kiln, as the chance of it exploding increases.

Any moisture will expand and explode. The thin walls dry and keep the whole piece light weight

It helps it dry a lot faster, if its too thick you don't know how much moisture is left and it *will* explode in the kiln if not 100% dry

that's kind of the same process we learned to make an alcohol holder thing lol I don't have an English name for it but it's called "perec kulacs" and it's.. pretty difficult to make lol so many things can go wrong with it...
