I love this! I've been getting an itch to use old cans for art, and the All Powerful Algorithm seems to have sensed that. In metalworking, this is called repoussé and chasing. Having something soft but firm underneath your metal, like a sheet of rubber, would help make the details deeper! In the US you can sometimes find small square sheets of rubber for making custom plumbing pipe gaskets in hardware stores. Leather might also work, and could be easier to find around the house or in second-hand stores. You could also make small 'carving tools' with some long nails and a small hammer. File/sand down the tip of the nail so it's round, and you can gently hammer the design into the aluminum. But if you go that route, be gentle with your wrists and hands. Move the hammer with your shoulder and elbow. Also wear a mask to protect your lungs from any metal particles, as well as eye protection.

Fyi, this is kind of like a metalworking process called chasing and repousse. It is what was used to make the statue of liberty

but you are so much fun to watch! and you instantly reminded me of this guy who made all kinds of art from all kinds of things it was on PBS I think, a while back. he became sort of famous to the point where someone who knew him gathered all his creations after the guy passed away and made it into a traveling museum, you know, to kind of commemorate him. btw, I remember back in the day while camping we used to make hats with aluminum cans. cut into squares, punch holes, and thread together with yarn. Whoooo!

@@themanhimself1949 actually this made me think! i've seen people do this with thicker foil (like from a tomato paste tube, or those disposable baking sheet tray things) and i think they require very little pressure, so that might be a way easier option! since my ones are just hanging they don't have to worry about wear n tear. you could even layer up kitchen tin foil, maybe?? if you give anything like that a try please let me know!!!!

In the Netherlands they are going to stop with plastic collecting because people dont clean it, which makes it unusuable. so I am very jealous of the fact that people in Japan are able to recycle properly. I wish people here did that and now its gone.
