as soon as I read the title, I thought, there is no such thing... owls cannot pivot their eyes inside their orbits, at all, they're fixed. may have something to do with why they can rotate their heads around over 360 degrees.

J, Very much appreciate you sharing errors and mistakes. Especially the unsafe use of your band saw. Very good! Having worked with heavy machinery and industrial tools all my life, I saw regrettable incidents. Tools and machines are wonderful, but must be respected and the operator must have a heightened awareness and control during use. Thank you for sharing and coaching us to be smart and safe. The Owl is so beautiful! I have completed carving my wife’s favorite pet kitty. The eyes, as always, evoked a lot of anxiety, to get the desired results. I suppose that is appropriate… “Eyes are the window to the soul”. Looking forward to the next creation. Best

Your Stargazer is enchanting! The colors in the wood are perfect...where they are very light, and much darker. The texture in the feathers do look natural and not at all man made. Nothing you do would be boring for your audience. I'm sure someone must of said this a year ago, but you have artists watching you work. I am an artist and absolutely love watching other artists work, on anything! I love your Otter with the.wave, that is powerful! Well...now I'm on to your sleeping bear cub!

Great sculpture. My favorite so far is the wolf cub. I liked how his dark walnut body contrasted with the lighter area on his face and paw. Just gorgeous and full of character! I really enjoy when you apply the oil to your pieces...it reveals their true character.

Wonderful work, Jonas! I love the owl's "fat" winter feathers and its expression! It looks healthy, happy.. in awe of the night sky ... I very much agree with you about kind expressions and the world needing it. I'm sure your exhibition at the end of the year will be wonderful! As for what you said about pricing ... definitely keep an eye on how many hours you work on your project, and consider giving yourself "an hourly salary". That plus expenses ... should probably make a decent asking price. And considering you're a true artists, who creates one of a kind pieces (like I do),.. you can also factor that into your price. I think you'll find that people who truly love your work, will be willing to spend a lot on it to own one of your sculptures! ;)
@Jonasolsenwoodcraft Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Iona! Yeah the owl had to be fat to stay warm in the cold night :D I am very excited when i decide to sell them. It will be superinteresting, but i have no expectations.

Love this owl the most of the 3, the feathers on the back seem thick and soft and I want to touch them lol. An exhibition would be wonderful (please film if possible!), and while you are a sculptor, please don't devalue your sketches. Those could also be considered art and i'm sure prints of them could sell, and would really help tell the story if displayed in the exhibition; it is super interesting to see the whole process develop. When it comes to pricing you should treat this like a small business. There are the obvious factors: costs + time + profit. The simplest part is how much do tools, materials, electricity, workshop heat, etc cost you. Then the hardest part is figuring out how much time you spend on each piece (including conceptualization, sketching, carving, sanding, finishing, etc). This likely isn't a straight line as creativity isn't predictable and it may be hard to recognize as work because i'm sure take pleasure in your passions, but acknowledge that it is a work product, and something to be compensated for. Time tracking apps or a simple log page in your sketch book may help; people tend to believe they do things faster than they actually do. Lastly, and while easier than the factual costs, will feel the hardest, is profit. How much do you want to make? How do you personally value your creativity and talent. How much do you think others value your skill? The standard way would be to calculate your costs, put a dollar value on your time, do the math and then add a profit margin of x%. That's fine and will work, but you limit your potential if x is too low, and you set a precedent. You could also start with a target salary and divide it by the number of sculptures a year (current target of 12) and then add your material costs and get a number that way, which also works, but you potentially devalue your time if some sculptures take significantly more time than others. You have the extra variable that this is unique one of a kind art. There is a supply of 1 of each object. Unlike sketches and paintings, you probably aren't going to do reproductions/prints. That creates scarcity which can have tremendous value. FWIW it would be cool if you looked into trying a cast to do reproductions in bronze or epoxy, or maybe even a 3d scan to do 'prints'. Could be another line of business, some cool videos, and make your art more accessible, but I wouldn't want you to do anything that distracts you from your passion of creating beautiful wood sculptures.

I agree he should exhibit the drawings in the show...keep the original drawing and offer a signed 1 of 1 copy to the buyer of the owl at a price...🌿🌿🌿

Thank you for sharing your amazing work. I watched this after spending 4 hours with a chainsaw struggling to find a sure way to shape the head and eyes. I I see you rounded the head large, set in the tufts on top of the head, then carved in the eye ball deep, then cut in the feathers around the eyeball. This order of roughing out makes a big difference in balancing the carving.
