Yayyyyy, I was so waiting for a new video and wow it was so worth to wait, what a stunning sculpture again. A very good idea, a fallen hawk so much feelings go to it and I love it. I did love too when you started oiling on the eye so its like it gave a feeling to the sculpture and it is saying; I am fallen. Stunning artist you are and love all your videos.

An idea: I would love to see you do a large, multiple carving piece. You could go over the design and choose characters or sculptures that fit together to create one big scene. You can do a video for each section (each separate sculpture) and the process of carving them to fit together. You could even design and carve a large background setting for them to all attach to. Other commenters, comment what kinds of scenes or themes or animals/creatures you would like to see ?

In my minor attempts at sculpting wood I'm blown away with your talents. While watching your video I had an idea of a group sculpture of a squirrel, chipmunk, and some mice holding up an object, probably a sign for your studio. Possibly also they could be perched on a branch that holds your sign below it.

After watching a few of your videos I am getting motivated to finish a project that I started almost 20 years ago. My father-in-law gave me a block of walnut from a tree he had milled after taking it down and it was stored in his garage for 30 years. I carved a lion laying with a lamb to the point where it is time for the finer details and the wood was so hard that my cheap tools were breaking and I was afraid I would ruin it. But now I have a dremel and I am convinced it is the way to go instead of simple hand tools. Wish me luck! You do incredible work and you have inspired me to make a go at it! 🙏❤️
@Jonasolsenwoodcraft Жыл бұрын
Good luck! By the way i think hand tools work well also, But they have to be supersharp! The bits from Saburrtooth seem to help me a lot in combination with diamond burr bits for the final finish. When i use the diamond burrs i run the at low speed to not burn the wood.

Hello Jonas, Tor here. I have been working with wood for a while, and I say you don't despair on the cracks. They are so much a part of the material, and you incorporating them in your work I think splendid. Now, have you ever considered filling them? There are lots of different fillers on the market, or you can fill with woodstrips from the same log, with a matching grain and then eventually tone it to blend perfectly in. Maybe even consider bow-ties to keep your cracks from expanding. Watch some furniture-restoring videos of Thomas Johnson, maybe it could help you. Love.
@Jonasolsenwoodcraft11 ай бұрын
Hello and thank you for the kind words! Yes i have concidered filling the cracks for future projects. It will make it a little bit easier since i dont have to worry about the placement or the design that much. I think i will do some epoxy work next year

Don't change anything in your videos that isn't coming to you naturally. If you're not a storyteller, then don't force yourself to become one just "for content". There's plenty of people out there people who simply want to see your existing skillset grow, and your patience and creativity come to fruition. You're doing good. And maybe consider adding sanding back? ; ) I'd love to see how the sculpture changes from the more coarse state to the super smooth polished one.

I would commend your for the mere design and cinematic effect alone, of the oil dripping in each spot you presented is very nice. I think when it came to the base, i was happy to hear that most of them you aimed to be temporary. although nothing was incredibly wrong with it it didn't feel as seamless as you other projects I've seen. I'm not sure if that means that the overall shape and vertical blocky shape of it didn't fit in my eye, or me wanting some other element to link them together. I actually thought for at least a moment that the cracks in the base were something that could not only link it together, but was also something connecting the vine patterns near the head of the bird. Since you have usually had a layered and nature/leaf looking elements in all areas, i was thinking this might have been an accent on the base connecting the cut out/down element of vines/veins creeping up from the bottom of the base and then into the bird. perhaps some other side narrative to the bird, or reason for its sleep/rest if that makes any sense.

If you use beeswax on the cut ends of logs you plan to use as soon as possible after they are: this will help halt much of the cracking until you are ready to carve. Sometimes it can work to heavily oil periodically throughout caving. And finish after staining with oil. “Boos Lock, Mystery Oil” if you can get it where you are. Something similar should be available as alternate. This is specifically designed for wood countertops and cutting boards.

Your videos are very pleasant to watch. You take great care with the light, the camera angles and the edit of the video. It looks absolutely magical, when the first brushstrokes of oil hit the wood. As for future video ideas... that's actually a hard one. Your format ist pretty straight forward as is your craft. You did mention, that you're getting more comfortable with finding the sculpture within the wood and that you can't always make sculptures of such large size. I believe, that going for a smaller piece once in a while is the only suggestion, i can make without trying to meddle with your style. I'm sure you've considered it, but the only way to really stabilize a multi-crack like on the wing tips is epoxy. It's has to be a very non-viscous epoxy of course, those meant for modern wood river tables or floor surfaces (which ever is cheaper really is the main criteria if you're not doing anything structural or really massive (both wide and deep) pours at once. I've personally grown fond of the youtube-woodworkers' default black tinted epoxy. It goes surprisingly well with naturally quite light woods as well. *edit* Your worry that the figure of the wood would become masked by the stain is mostly unfounded, unless the stain is really dark of course. But what I have found, especially if you do the guitar builder double staining, is that while the figure pops more on camera with that technique, the iridescent quality of when you look at the wood with your two eyes, it's not quite as 3D anymore and doesn't change/flash as much when you move your head to let the light interact with it from a different angle. If you've seen pictures of those absolutely gorgeous dye jobs of guitars with great figured wood, they achieve that by first using a darker shade of their desired color, sanding it partly away (basically leaving the vertically lined wood that absorbed the dye deeper) and staining it again with a lighter version of the same dye. The result is that the figure pops really well, but it doesn't have that flashy flame-y iridescent quality when you move the piece around with the light. I'm not sure what that phenomenon is called in English, but you know how the wood figure is sort of alive and somewhat 3D when you move it with the light. The guitar maker 2-tone-dye-job makes the figure pop, but it's the same no matter how you move it. It's sorta like painted on. So great for pictures, but less "alive" when you see it yourself and look at it from different angles. Try it with some pieces of figured wood scraps, it kinda bizarre how much it affects it.

Making bases;check with companies that make headstones. They often have off cuts and mistakes, in granites and marble. Another option is places that specialize in stone countertops, again off cuts and mistakes. I like to make a “pile” of random colors and different types of stones. As for ideas for next projects, I would love to see how you would design/create the mythical turtle that holds up the earth sitting on the four elephants. I know, a lot of different bits to bring together. Maybe suited to a more future project. How about a narwhal, or an orca. ;)

I should look into that. Stone does go great with wood. I love your suggestion! Would be really time consuming, But maybe well worth it!

Sometime you could try to carve a moose, but make the antlers out of a different wood than the rest? I love your videos, you're so talented 😁

Good idea! I should do that since i live close to wild moose

What can I say man? Beautiful work again. Nice to see that you always find a way to solve problems (like the chipped off woodpieces). And the fact that you just totally skipped the (hand)sanding part in this video…. I understand, not the most interesting part for a video, but sanding, that’s half the work bro and makes the difference between a nice sculpture and a awesome one (like this). Although personally, I like your dynamic, vivid and alive sculptures better, I see why you chose this design for a autumn/winter sculpture. Works very well and in the range of sculptures you’ve made it fits very well. Now, next project, a splashing marlin with twisted body wood be great!

Thank you! Yeah i have neglected fish sculptures so far. I should do one, But its a bit intimidating with all the talented fish carvers that has perfected the craft
@jopvandecrommenacker Жыл бұрын
True. And I guess a fish has a bit less facial expression. Have you even considered a reindeer sculpture? I guess where you live you should be able to find some reindeer antlers which you could use. Mixing a stylized sculpture with real life antlers could be pretty cool.

This looks so amazing!! Also you could take some of the animals you made, and turn them into "regular characters"! That fox? Maybe sculpture of being older and reaching the end of its path?

Thank you! Yes i would love to do that. It is a very good idea!

Jonas, I comment on most of your videos and they are always amazing, this sculpture is no exception!! Another fantastic work of true art ... I know you like mythical creatures like fenrir so would you think of doing a minotaur or water buffalo, I TRUELY believe those would be an amazing and educational challenge for you!

Salam 👋❤✌️

Such an amazing sculpture! It would seem many of your sculptures tend to have animals in them, I think it would be interesting to see a sculpture of something like a druid or water nymph. Mixing the features of creatures and humans while maintaining the tranquility and mysticism of nature.

I'd really appreciate a longer look at the final result! More angles, better lighting, zoomed in shots that are allowed to linger for a few seconds. Also, jackalopes!

Your talent to draw and carving just blew my mind. As much I started caving my small project. My Mjolnir and Jormungand is just small child necklace compare to even Your wolf heads. And other stuff like that hawk? It's just other level of carving.
